Chinese drama viewers are once again talking about the possibility of Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan sharing the screen after the success of The First Frost (难哄). Online discussions about the pair’s chemistry have resurfaced, with fresh rumours suggesting the two actors may reunite in a new project that would deliberately reverse their previous character dynamic.

Speculation about a second collaboration has circulated for weeks across Chinese entertainment forums and social media, with several industry accounts claiming the project is currently under development.

According to these reports, the drama would be titled Take My Boss Away (快把我老板带走 Kuai Ba Wo Lao Ban Dai Zou) and produced by the same creative team behind The First Frost (难哄).

If confirmed, the series would move the duo into a different genre altogether. Rather than a straightforward romance, Take My Boss Away is described as an urban fantasy story built around a role-reversal premise that places the main characters in a parallel world.

In The First Frost (难哄), Bai Jingting played Sang Yan, a confident and charismatic figure whose presence naturally dominated the relationship dynamic. Zhang Ruonan, by contrast, portrayed Wen Yifan, a character shaped by quiet warmth and emotional restraint.

The balance between Sang Yan’s outward confidence and Wen Yifan’s gentle temperament became one of the drama’s defining features, helping the series build a strong following.

Reports surrounding Take My Boss Away (快把我老板带走) suggest that the new drama would intentionally flip that formula. Zhang Ruonan is said to be attached to the role of Jiang Xiaoyi, while Bai Jingting is rumoured to portray Ye Zhen, placing their characters in a dramatically different power structure.

The series is adapted from the novel by Ye Feiran, which follows Jiang Xiaoyi, a woman who believes her life is plagued by constant bad luck. Her daily routine involves working under Ye Zhen, a demanding and perfectionist boss known for scrutinising every detail of her work.

A sudden accident transports the two into a parallel reality where their positions are reversed. Jiang Xiaoyi unexpectedly becomes a high-ranking executive, while Ye Zhen is reduced to an ordinary employee navigating the workplace from the bottom of the hierarchy.

In the original novel, Jiang Xiaoyi initially relishes the opportunity to turn the tables on her former superior. Yet the longer they remain in this altered world, the more complicated their relationship becomes. What begins as playful retaliation gradually evolves into a deeper emotional connection.

Eventually, the pair return to their original reality. With Ye Zhen reclaiming his authority and Jiang Xiaoyi back in her previous role, the emotional balance between them changes again, opening the door to a new stage in their relationship.

The rumoured casting has quickly stirred discussion among fans who still remember the impact of The First Frost. For many viewers, the appeal lies less in the storyline and more in seeing Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan interact again.

Fan reactions online have been largely enthusiastic, though the tone varies. Some viewers say they are ready to support the actors regardless of the genre.

“As long as they’re acting together again, I’m watching,” one comment reads.

Others argue that their pairing works precisely because the romance feels understated rather than exaggerated.

“Their chemistry is natural. It doesn’t feel forced,” another user wrote.

A smaller group of fans are more cautious, pointing out that role reversals and parallel-world plots can be difficult to execute well.

These viewers say they hope the production team prioritises character writing rather than relying solely on the popularity of the pairing.

For now, the project remains unconfirmed. Neither casting nor production schedules have been formally announced, and the reports circulating online are still based on industry chatter rather than official statements.

Still, the ongoing discussion highlights how strongly audiences responded to the pairing of Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan. Whether Take My Boss Away (快把我老板带走) ultimately moves forward or not, the idea of their reunion is already shaping fan expectations.

If the project does become official, it may quickly turn into one of the most closely watched casting developments in the Chinese drama scene.
