Under the influence, Zhao finally reveals the truth: the Autumn Mist Painting was never painted by him.
It was created by his childhood friend, Gu Zhiqian.
Despite being separated by over a hundred years, Zhao speaks of Gu as if they are still connected, emotionally bound across time.
The painting, half-finished and never completed, has become Zhao’s most precious possession—his emotional lifeline.
Realising that persuasion won’t work, Bi Zhi and Su Bei Lu travel back a hundred years to Gu Manor. Once grand, the residence is now faded and empty. Gu Zhiqian lies exhausted at a desk, beside a fully coloured painting. Yet Zhao’s version remains incomplete. This contradiction forces them to go even further back—twelve years earlier.

At that time, Gu Zhiqian’s life is full of light. His birthday is celebrated with poetry, music, and laughter.
Beneath the joy, his mother quietly seeks a suitable marriage match for him.
Everything changes when Gu’s father dies suddenly while returning to the capital. The Gu family loses its pillar overnight.
While evading punishment from his father earlier, Gu accidentally causes a courtesan named Weiwei to fall into the water.
He saves her without hesitation, and the two slowly form a deep emotional bond. Weiwei grows determined to leave her old life behind and prepares redemption money, hoping to stay with Gu and face life together. Gu promises her a future.
That promise collapses. Gu returns home to find the Gu family destroyed. His mother sacrifices her own life to save him, leaving behind a final message asking Weiwei to let him go. Believing Gu abandoned her, Weiwei later ends her life in despair.
Years pass. Gu devotes himself to study, trying to revive his family name, but repeatedly fails the imperial exams. He becomes isolated, unkempt, and emotionally hollow. One night, surrounded by his unfinished paintings, the Autumn Mist Painting begins to complete itself—driven by obsession, grief, and unresolved love.
When Bi Zhi and Su Bei Lu finally meet Gu in this timeline, he refuses to part with the painting. It is the only companion he has left.
