| Qin Wen Controversy Explained: Shanghai Police Clarify the Facts |
The Shanghai Police have officially responded to the swirling controversy surrounding acclaimed screenwriter Qin Wen, firmly debunking online rumours claiming she “used personal connections” to get away after allegedly “assaulting an officer”.
In their statement, police stressed that the entire case was handled lawfully and appropriately, with no misconduct or outside influence involved.
The supposed “privilege and power play” Qin Wen mentioned in a leaked private recording was described as nothing more than “personal exaggeration” — essentially, an offhand boast that spiralled out of context.
🚨 What Actually Happened
According to the official clarification by @警民直通车-上海 (Shanghai Police), the incident in question dates back to a traffic altercation, during which Qin Wen and a companion were briefly taken to the local station.

Both parties reportedly acknowledged their mistakes and submitted written reflections, after which they were lawfully fined for traffic violations — nothing more serious than that.
At the time, Qin phoned her husband Wang Guangli seeking advice.
Wang, a filmmaker himself, tried contacting a media friend for help but was politely turned down — and the matter ended there.
The police emphasised that no one “pulled strings” and the case followed all standard procedures.
🎙 The Viral Recording That Sparked It All
So where did the chaos begin?
A few weeks ago, an old audio recording resurfaced online, allegedly from 2020, in which Qin appeared to joke about “calling a friend to bail her out” after a supposed run-in with the police.
In the clip — reportedly taken without her consent — Qin and a friend were heard chatting over drinks, casually dropping lines about “being saved by connections”.
Later, it turned out to be a misleadingly edited recording that painted a false narrative of corruption.
Shanghai Police confirmed that Qin’s words in the clip were “taken out of context”, explaining that she had been “showing off her network for fun” during a friendly chat, not recounting a real event.
🎬 Qin Wen’s Reputation and Response
Qin Wen, best known for her critically acclaimed works The Disguiser, The Rebel, and the award-winning Blossoms Shanghai (繁花), has yet to release a public statement addressing the police clarification.
However, multiple industry sources suggest that her management team is preparing an official explanation to calm the online debate.
The screenwriter has long been recognised as one of China’s most talented creatives, often working closely with renowned director Wong Kar-Wai.
But this incident has drawn attention not only to her reputation — it’s also sparked a broader discussion about public responsibility in the entertainment industry.

💬 Netizens’ Reactions: “Think Before You Speak”
After the clarification, Chinese social media exploded with mixed reactions.
Many netizens pointed out that, in the digital age, private recordings can easily spiral out of control, leading to unnecessary scandals.
“Celebrities should be more cautious with their words. Once it’s online, it’s forever,” one top comment read on Weibo.
Others praised the police for quickly clearing the air and protecting public trust.
“Glad the police clarified it fast. Rumours spread faster than facts these days,” another user wrote.
📈 Trending and Public Reflection
The topic #QinWenClarification dominated Chinese social media this week, garnering millions of views and thousands of discussions about celebrity ethics, legal accountability, and the fine line between “casual talk” and “public perception”.
The debate has also reignited interest in Qin’s past achievements, particularly her award-winning adaptation of Blossoms Shanghai, which swept five major categories at the 29th Shanghai TV Festival in 2024, including Best Drama and Best Adapted Screenplay.
