| Hong Kong Director Wong Kar-wai’s Recording Sparks Debate, Netizens Recall Song Hye Kyo’s Cut Scenes in The Grandmaster |
An audio clip has set the Chinese entertainment scene on fire, giving everyone a peek into the behind-the-scenes chaos of Blossoms Shanghai (繁花).
The recording — a private conversation between Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai and screenwriter Qin Wen — includes eyebrow-raising remarks about several big names like Tang Yan, Liu Shishi, Ni Ni, Chen Daoming, You Benchang, and Jin Jing.
Some comments that were supposed to be “jokes” have been criticised as crossing the line, especially those about actress Jin Jing.
What was meant to be a casual meeting quickly turned into a viral scandal, reigniting talk about Wong Kar Wai’s notoriously eccentric filmmaking style.

The “Wong Kar-wai Victims Alliance” Trend Rises Again
Once the clip started circulating, Chinese netizens dusted off an old inside joke: the “Wong Kar-wai Victims Alliance.” The term pokes fun at how many actors have been “tortured” by the auteur’s unpredictable filming habits — endless reshoots, vanishing roles, and scripts that seem to change daily.
The trending topic brought back The Grandmaster (一代宗师) and, with it, the story of Song Hye Kyo — arguably the most famous “member” of that alliance.
Her Weibo tag #宋慧乔一代宗师戏份被王家卫大幅删减# (“Song Hye Kyo’s scenes heavily cut in The Grandmaster”) hit the number-one spot on the trending list.

Song Hye Kyo’s Long Wait for Two Lines
Back in 2010, Song Hye Kyo joined The Grandmaster expecting a short guest role. What followed was a three-year shooting ordeal in the quiet, misty town of Kaiping, Guangdong. She later joked that her only daily escape was playing badminton with staff.
By the time the film hit theatres in 2013, almost all her footage had disappeared — reduced to a few minutes on screen and just two lines of dialogue.
Rumour has it that her passport was held by production to keep her from leaving early, though this claim has never been officially confirmed.
Song Hye-kyo once said, “In Wong Kar wai’s editing room, my character can live or die — I wouldn’t even know.”
That uncertainty, mixed with the director’s perfectionism, became her defining experience of artistic endurance.
Following is the clip from The Grandmaster, where Song Hye Kyo filmed for three years but only had two lines in the final cut.

Other “Victims” — Kimura, Tony, Andy, and Zhang Ziyi
The “alliance” is full of A-listers who’ve survived Wong’s slow-motion creative world.
-
Takuya Kimura reportedly filmed 2046 on and off for six years, ending up with just a handful of scenes.
-
Tony Leung Chiu-wai has famously eaten pears and wonton noodles dozens of times for the “perfect take.”
-
Andy Lau spent two days on a scene that was eventually cut to a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo.
-
Zhang Ziyi reshot one scene up to forty times during 2046, later saying she doubted her own acting ability.
So when the 2025 recording surfaced, netizens joked: “Another new member joins the Wong Kar-wai Victims Alliance!”
The Recording Drama — Writer’s Claims and Director’s Remarks

The scandal didn’t stop atn this gossip. Screenwriter Gu Er (Cheng Junnian), who suffers from ALS, said he exposed the audio because he was unfairly removed from the writing credits.
He claimed to have contributed significantly to the business plotlines in Blossoms Shanghai, but was later written off as “just an assistant.”
The production team quickly denied his accusations, insisting Gu only helped with data collection. They accused him of manipulating recordings and confirmed legal action is underway.

| Tang Yan reached a new career peak through her role in Wong Kar-wai’s drama Blossoms Shanghai. |
In the tapes, Wong Kar-wai calls Tang Yan “pretentious” for always arriving early and acting too proper, while Qin Wen laughs and praises Wong Kar Wai for being “sharp at reading people.”
Later, Qin mocks Liu Shishi and jokes about her co-star Ni Ni getting her signature line. Even veteran actor You Benchang wasn’t spared, being described as “not easy to manage” for posting too much on WeChat.
The harsh tone left many fans questioning whether Wong’s famously “poetic” image still holds up in 2025.

Between Art and Exploitation
This controversy has once again blurred the line between artistic devotion and creative exploitation.
Some netizens call Wong Kar-wai’s style “a test of submission,” accusing him of wasting actors’ golden years. Others argue that his method is precisely what makes his films timeless — slow, deliberate, and emotionally precise.
Even Song Hye Kyo later admitted the experience shaped her as an actress. Many fans believe her controlled yet explosive performance in The Glory owes something to those gruelling Grandmaster days.
Filmmaker Ang Lee once teased, “Only Wong Kar-wai can get away with that kind of filmmaking freedom.” But as more stories surface, people are starting to ask — where’s the fine line between genius and obsession?
