So turns out Love in the Clouds (入青云) isn’t just melting hearts on screen – it’s also home to a cheeky little rivalry behind the scenes.
Lu Yuxiao recently sat down with Sohu Entertainment and gave everyone a sneak peek at what it was really like working with her co-star Hou Minghao — and honestly, it sounds like a right laugh.
“We were always trying to outdo each other”
Lu Yuxiao, who plays the lively and lovable Mingyi, shared that working with Hou Minghao for the first time wasn’t just fun — it was full of playful competition.
“We were kind of competing all the time,” she said with a grin.
“Whoever set a goal would keep track, and when one of us hit it, we’d brag — like, ‘Oi, I won!’ It kept us sharp, you know?”
Despite the teasing, Lu Yuxiao was quick to add that Hou Minghao’s professionalism stood out.
“He’s always considerate and takes his work really seriously. Even when we’re joking around, it actually keeps the vibe on set really energetic,” she explained.
From rivalry to mutual respect
Turns out Lu Yuxiao’s respect for Hou runs deeper than their acting partnership.
She couldn’t help fangirling a bit over his musical talent, confessing she had no idea he used to be an SM trainee.
“He sings so well — I was genuinely shocked when I first heard him practising on set,” she said.
“He even showed me a few techniques, and I was like, ‘Blimey, how do you even do that?’ Honestly, I’m his fan now.”
When asked if he’d tried to teach her to sing, Lu Yuxiao laughed.
“He did, but singing’s not something you just pick up in a day. It’s skill and training. I really admire people who can do it.”
If they performed together?
The interviewer teased her with the idea of a joint stage performance, to which LuYuxiao immediately said she’d rather dance.
“If I sing, I’ll just ruin it for him,” she joked. “He’s too good! I’ll just move around and wave instead.”
And when someone mentioned a Trouble Maker-style performance, she cheekily added,
“Why not? If the chance comes up, let’s do it!”
Mingyi’s cuteness wasn’t scripted
Fans of Love in the Clouds adore Lu Yuxiao’s character Mingyi for her cute expressions and spontaneous charm — and she confirmed that none of it was planned.
“Almost all of Mingyi’s expressions just came naturally. I didn’t think them through. When I rewatch some of those scenes, even I think, ‘That’s actually really cute!’” she laughed.
Still, she hopes people don’t mix her up with her on-screen roles.
“In real life, I’m actually slow to react and a bit scatterbrained,” she admitted.
“I hope viewers can see the difference and appreciate the role, not just me.”
A fun duo with strong chemistry
Between the playful competition, shared respect, and cheeky banter, it’s clear why Hou Minghao and Lu Yuxiao’s pairing has become a fan favourite this season.
