Ubah Hassan is officially absent from The Real Housewives of New York City Season 16, bringing her run on the revamped Bravo series to an end after two seasons. The Somali-Canadian model became one of the more unpredictable personalities in the rebooted cast, bringing plenty of humour and warmth to the group while also finding herself at the centre of several arguments.
Her departure therefore came as a surprise to viewers who had watched her go from playful moments to full-scale fallout and back again. Yet, despite all the speculation surrounding her exit, there is no indication that one explosive incident alone sent her packing. Instead, Ubah’s absence appears to be part of a wider cast overhaul that reshaped RHONY ahead of its sixteenth season.
Ubah joined RHONY when Bravo completely refreshed the cast for Season 14, and she quickly established herself as someone who was unlikely to quietly sit in the corner while everyone else argued. Her first major storyline involved Erin Lichy, after a seemingly harmless prank involving a hidden phone turned into a dispute that somehow managed to survive almost the entire season.
What began with the sort of petty drama viewers have come to expect from reality television became considerably more serious as the disagreement continued, with neither woman seeming particularly interested in letting the other have the final word.
The fallout also put Ubah in a position where she felt the need to push back against how she was being portrayed. After the Season 14 reunion, she spoke about her discomfort with being reduced to the familiar “angry Black woman” narrative, a point that resonated with many viewers.
Ubah had certainly shown an intense side of her personality, but she also had a playful and affectionate presence that could easily disappear whenever tensions started rising. Reality television does have a rather convenient habit of turning one heated moment into somebody’s entire personality, and Ubah clearly did not want to accept that label without a fight.
Season 15 brought another difficult chapter, this time involving Brynn Whitfield. During an argument, Ubah made a remark that deeply upset Brynn. The situation became more complicated when Brynn told the other women that Ubah knew about a deeply personal experience from her past. Ubah later said she had no knowledge of it and insisted that she would never deliberately make such a cruel comment if she had known. The incident appeared to weigh heavily on her, and she became visibly distressed by what had unfolded.
Ubah eventually apologised for what she had said, but the damage had already created another complicated divide within the group. As the season progressed, some of the other cast members began questioning Brynn’s version of how the conversation had unfolded, while the dispute itself became another major talking point around Ubah.
By the reunion, Ubah and Brynn were able to have a more civil conversation, although Ubah made it clear that reconciliation did not automatically mean they were about to become inseparable best friends. Frankly, reality TV friendships have always had a rather flexible definition of the word “friendship”.
When RHONY Season 16 began taking shape, rumours quickly suggested that several familiar faces would not be returning. Bravo was reportedly looking at another adjustment to the cast, meaning Ubah’s potential absence became part of a much bigger conversation rather than simply speculation about her personal circumstances. The uncertainty continued until March 2026, when the Season 16 cast announcement confirmed that Ubah would not be returning.
Importantly, Ubah Hassan has not publicly explained why she is leaving RHONY. She has not announced a dramatic personal decision, nor has she identified a particular disagreement as the reason behind her departure. That leaves viewers with plenty of theories but relatively few confirmed answers. Based on the circumstances surrounding the cast reshuffle, the simplest explanation is that her departure was connected to the broader decision to rebuild the lineup rather than being the result of one specific confrontation.
That distinction matters because Ubah’s RHONY run was hardly short on moments that could have been turned into a dramatic exit story. She had disagreements with Erin, a major clash with Brynn and plenty of emotional scenes in between. If Bravo wanted to construct a dramatic farewell around one of those incidents, the material was certainly available. Instead, her exit appears much more straightforward: the show changed direction, and Ubah was not included in the new version.
Fans have understandably had mixed reactions to Ubah’s absence. Some viewers appear disappointed that one of the cast members capable of bringing unpredictability, humour and genuine emotion to the series is gone, while others believe the frequent conflicts made her storyline increasingly exhausting.
There is also a middle ground: Ubah could be entertaining precisely because she was unpredictable, but that same intensity sometimes pushed the drama far beyond the light-hearted chaos that makes RHONY enjoyable. Her supporters are likely to miss her personality, while viewers who found some of her confrontations difficult to watch may see the reshuffle as a chance for the franchise to start fresh.
My take is that Ubah leaving RHONY feels less like a dramatic personal departure and more like an unfortunate casualty of reality-TV housekeeping. Her biggest strength was also her biggest problem: she never seemed particularly interested in behaving like a perfectly polished reality-TV character. When something annoyed her, viewers usually knew about it. When she felt hurt, that was visible too.
That can make someone compelling television, but it can also create a lot of emotional baggage for a cast that is already juggling several competing personalities. I would have preferred to see whether Ubah could have developed beyond the conflict-heavy storylines, especially after she showed that she could acknowledge mistakes and apologise. Two seasons may simply not have been enough time to see that evolution.
Ultimately, there is no confirmed evidence that Ubah Hassan left RHONY because of one particular feud or controversy. Her Season 16 absence appears tied to the wider cast changes, while Ubah herself has not offered a detailed public explanation.
That leaves a slightly unsatisfying ending to her time on the show, particularly for viewers who expected another season of her distinctive personality.
