ICYMI: Moonlit Reunion Ending Recap

The climactic battle saw Xu Kai’s Mei Zhuyu and Tian Xiwei’s Wu Zhen finally take down the demonic creature Xie Sha Gui Ying. Just when relief seemed within reach, the villain made one last move—possessing Mei Zhuyu’s body.

Faced with a cruel dilemma, Wu Zhen remembered the words of the former Cat Lord (Xu Haiqiao): “When you face the hardest choice, you will understand.”

Why Moonlit Reunion’s Final Episode Is Facing Criticism

With trembling hands and tears streaming, she stabbed her beloved to save Chang’an. The scene of Mei Zhuyu coughing blood before slipping into a coma was brutal for fans who had grown attached to the couple’s bond.

Three months later, a twist arrived: Mei Zhuyu awoke, his golden eyes glowing as the new Cat Lord—an identity passed down from Wu Zhen. Just when things felt settled, the show threw in a cheeky post-credits skit.

Wu Zhen, seven months pregnant, was spoiled rotten by Zhuyu as he ran around town fetching her cravings.

In a comic high, the pair even swapped souls thanks to a mischievous doll, leading Wu Zhen to quip with relief: “Seven months! I’ve endured this for seven months—now I’m going to Ruyi Lou for a big drink!” The playful scene lifted the gloom after the heavy main ending.

Why Viewers Are Divided?

Despite the semi-happy wrap-up, fans were quick to call it a “rauwei” (botched ending). Two main complaints surfaced:

  1. No Explanation for the Golden Eyes – Mei Zhuyu’s coma and sudden awakening as the Cat Lord were original to the drama, but rushed through so fast that audiences were left scratching their heads. The detail never appeared in Fu Hua’s source novel The Daily Life of Mei Furen Doting on Her Husband.

  2. Where’s the Family Life? – In the novel, fans got warm slice-of-life chapters of the couple raising children. The drama, however, stopped short at Wu Zhen’s pregnancy, cutting off the family storyline that many were eagerly waiting for.

Love it or loathe it, Moonlit Reunion ended on a note that will stick in viewers’ minds—both for Xu Kai and Tian Xiwei’s powerful emotional performance, and for the debate over how faithful or flawed the adaptation turned out to be.
