Tencent’s fantasy-romance To Get Master (2025) has finally wrapped its 20-episode run, leaving us a bit emotionally torn, to be honest.
On the surface, this was pitched as another light time-travel sweet drama, but underneath, it dove head-first into a surprisingly dark world of human nature, power games, and fate.
It pulled off a proper blend of heartbreak and tenderness, wrapped up with just enough moral reflection to keep you thinking long after the credits rolled.

In the final showdown, we see Princess Li Song’er (Bao ShangEn), who had fallen into the fictional world of Sole Supremacy, face an impossible choice. The only way to get home? Sacrifice Gu Yuan (Johnny Zhang Junning), the demon lord everyone feared.
But after everything, she chooses the unthinkable — she throws away her chance to return by destroying the twin jade tokens, refusing to kill Gu Yuan, and sealing off her own way back.

Just as all seems lost, Gu Yuan recovers memories of his former life. Turns out, he was once Zuimeng’s Protector General, who willingly turned into a demon three years ago to save an entire city. Even more gutting? Li Song’er was actually his fiancée, whom he had sent away for her own safety.
With the world around them collapsing, Gu Yuan burns the last of his soul to activate a protective barrier, while Li Song’er binds her half-lifeforce to him with her own blood. They literally lock hands, souls intertwined, rebuilding a new future between the blurred lines of fiction and reality.

Elsewhere, Baili Xingchen (Cui ShaoYang), the seemingly cold-hearted rival, delivers the most shocking turnaround. After learning the Baili clan had spent generations patching up plotlines broken by dimension travellers, he realises his family was sacrificed to maintain the world’s balance.
In the height of battle, Baili Xingchen impales himself with his jade flute to trigger a reversal array, sacrificing the last of the Baili bloodline to buy Li Song’er and Gu Yuan a second chance. That moment he smiles through tears — acknowledging that the cruelest punishment is giving a puppet the ability to love — was absolutely crushing.

And then there’s the ultimate puppet master, Xiao Jinghuan (played with chilling coolness). Manipulating the very author of the novel to write Sole Supremacy in order to wipe out the Zuimeng royal line, he thinks he’s won. But the author’s blood-written note — “only true hearts break illusions” — turns out to be left by Li Song’er’s own mother, who had been imprisoned to protect her daughter.
In a final twist, Xiao Jinghuan’s twisted plans backfire, and he’s sucked into the novel’s world himself, forced to eternally play the tyrant in an endless, nightmarish cycle of being killed by rebels day after day. Talk about getting what he deserved.

Gu Yuan’s rebirth breaks the labels of demon vs hero, suggesting that love and sacrifice can redeem even the darkest past.

Baili Xingchen’s heartbreak felt like a commentary on narrative cruelty itself — showing that if you give a “tool” a heart, its tragedy will be all the deeper.
And Xiao Jinghuan’s endless punishment shows how power, twisted and unchecked, devours its master in the end.
