Yang Yang’s back in the spotlight, and this time it’s not for being too dramatic on-screen — it’s for landing the lead role in a new costume xianxia drama that’s already stirring up hype. Word on the street (or well, Chinese media) is that the ever-dashing Yang Yang will be starring opposite rising darling Zhang Jingyi in "A Beautiful Destiny" aka Flowers Falling in the Moon City, and the behind-the-scenes tea is just as juicy as the casting itself.
Directed by Deng Ke, the brain behind The Prisoner of Beauty, the upcoming series is based on the novel Flowers Falling in Yuedu, Flowers Blooming in Canghai by Junzi Yize. It’s a fantastical tale involving an ancient god, Yinze, and a runaway princess-turned-sect-disciple, Luo Wei. Very peak xianxia vibes — immortal sects, tragic romance, the whole shebang.
But here’s where it gets interesting. Initially, names like Zhang Linghe (The Best Thing) and Deng Wei (Lost You Forever) were tossed around for the male lead. Then boom — Yang Yang lands the part. Why? Turns out, the show’s scriptwriter Lian Qiao might’ve manifested this moment from years back.
Lian Qiao, who penned Mengfei Comes Across, has apparently been a diehard Yang Yang stan for over a decade. He even said on social media years ago, “I write and you act — you must wait for me!” Imagine the commitment. He also mentioned in past posts how he tried (unsuccessfully) to get Yang Yang cast in previous dramas. Looks like the stars finally aligned.
Netizens were quick to react. Some reckon it’s cute and wholesome that the writer finally got to work with his fave, while others are side-eyeing the decision, especially considering the criticism Yang Yang got in 2023’s Fireworks of My Heart for, let’s say, laying it on a bit thick.
Still, no one can deny Yang Yang pulls off a costume. Since Fireworks, he’s gone back to his roots — starring in the xianxia drama The Immortal Ascension with Jin Chen, and wrapping up the adventure drama Zan Zhao Adventure with Zhang Ruonan. The Immortal Ascension is actually due to drop this July and already has over two million pre-registrations — not too shabby.
Meanwhile, Zhang Jingyi is riding high after her recent breakout alongside Xiao Zhan in Legend of Zang Hai, so fans are buzzing to see how she’ll fare opposite Yang Yang in this fresh pairing. She’s known for her calm screen presence and emotional depth, which could balance nicely with Yang Yang’s more expressive style — fingers crossed for solid chemistry.
Production for Flowers Falling in the Moon City kicks off in October, and early talk suggests this one’s gearing up to be a big-budget spectacle. Whether you're tuning in for the mythical plot, the visuals, or just to see if Yang Yang’s redemption arc is finally kicking off, it’s one to keep on your radar.
Stay tuned — moonlight, magic, and maybe a cheeky bit of drama await..
