Looks like Zhang Jingyi’s career is about to take a cosmic leap—literally.

Word on the street is that she’s just been cast as the female lead in the much buzzed-about xianxia Chinese drama A Beautiful Destiny (月都花落), and if true, it’ll be her very first time dabbling in the fantasy world of immortals, martial arts, and otherworldly love stories.

The project is a big one: produced by Xinli and directed by Deng Ke (of Guardians of the Dafeng and The Legend of Shen Li fame), with a script penned by Luo Xuan, known for Till the End of the Moon

It's adapted from Jun Zi Yi Ze’s novel Sea of Flowers (月都花落,沧海花开)—so yes, expect plenty of romantic yearning, magical drama, and tragic beauty.

Last week, the rumour mill was churning with names like Zhao Lusi and Tian Xiwei being tossed around for the role.

But apparently things got messy when Tian Xiwei’s name popped up, thanks to her connection with the director of the half-finished Almost Lover

Now, it looks like it’s Zhang Jingyi who's clinched the coveted role instead—and fans are buzzing.

The story?

An epic love tale between Ji Luo Wei, a prince from the Zhao family (played by up-and-comer Chang Huasen), and Yin Ze, the God of the Sea.

Yin Ze goes all out trying to win the heart of his beloved—he literally builds a city out of divine water called Suzhao, under the moonlight, no less.

A hundred years later, a spirit named Su Zhao is born in that city… and destiny starts weaving its magic.

Zhang Jingyi, who’s currently wrapping up her modern drama Wild Dog Bones with Song Wei Long, is said to be jumping straight into A Beautiful Destiny next.

Quite the switch from urban vibes to ancient myth, but we’re here for it.

With 30 episodes lined up on iQiyi and all the hallmarks of a sweeping xianxia hit—romance, martial arts, celestial conflict—it’s shaping up to be one of the must-watch costume dramas of the year.

If confirmed, this will be a major milestone for Zhang Jingyi.

She's done period pieces and modern dramas, but this kind of ethereal, action-packed fantasy is new territory.

And let’s be honest, we’ve been dying to see her in flowing robes and dramatic moonlit fights. More updates to come once it’s official—until then, fingers crossed and swords at the ready.
