Zhang Ben clears the air on casting one of China’s biggest stars – and it’s not just about fame
The hype’s been off the charts ever since Legend of Zang Hai got announced – and even more so when word dropped that Xiao Zhan’s front and centre. But according to producer Zhang Ben, the decision to cast him wasn’t some lazy star-power move. In fact, he says it had nothing to do with Xiao Zhan’s “top traffic” status.
“Honestly, it wasn’t because he’s popular,” Zhang admitted in a recent interview. “People still carry this stereotype about him because of the traffic label.”
Zhang Ben says he initially had his doubts too. But that all changed once he saw Xiao Zhan in action, right there on set.

“After working with him directly, I finally got it. I understand now why so many fans respect him. He gives everything – there’s a kind of stubborn positivity in how he works. He digs deep into his roles and doesn’t mess about.”
And it’s not just Zhang singing his praises. Veteran director Zheng Xiaolong, known for his sharp eye for talent, also spoke highly of the actor in an earlier interview. “Xiao Zhan’s someone who’s laser-focused. He works hard and never phones it in. I’ve seen the effort he puts in with my own eyes,” he said.
