A Dream Within a Dream Sparks Debate: Fans Defend It as Parody, Not Copying (Weibo) |
Some eagle-eyed netizens reckon the drama’s borrowed a bit too heavily from other popular series, dropping accusations of scene plagiarism (or parody) with comparisons to One and Only and Love Like the Galaxy.

Never one to dodge a tricky question, Liu Yuning addressed the controversy head-on in a recent chat with Upmedia. He laid it out straight:
“Some iconic scenes in dramas may appear similar, but that doesn’t mean they’re all plagiarised. Some are satirical, while others are tributes. Confusing the two can lead to serious misunderstandings.”

He went on to stress that his point was about the industry in general, not necessarily defending any one moment in A Dream Within a Dream. In fact, he highlighted how the drama thrives on witty, cheeky lines and a self-aware, satirical vibe rather than lazy copy-and-paste visuals.

One moment that sums up the drama’s playful spirit is when Li Yitong’s character, Song Yimeng, claps back at Liu Yuning’s Nan Heng for charging in with 5,000 soldiers against an enemy force of 40,000.
“If his brain isn’t broken, why didn’t he develop a better strategy first?”
A proper roast of those over-the-top heroic legends that flood historical dramas, that one. Viewers have absolutely loved Song Yimeng’s down-to-earth, sharp-tongued attitude, calling her a refreshing change from cookie-cutter heroines.

On top of that, the show runs on a brilliant meta-comedy twist. Li Yitong also plays Song Xiaoyu, a third-rate actress who ends up trapped inside the very script she’s reading — and suddenly becomes the tragic heroine Song Yimeng. No matter how hard she tries to rewrite her doomed storyline, the plot keeps yanking her back in.
There’s even three kiss scenes squeezed into the first three episodes, all played for laughs with a knowing wink. It sets the tone perfectly: clever, romantic, and just a bit cheeky.
Did you realize this TV Series #ADreamWithinADream took ideas/parodies from other dramas?

With its blend of light fantasy, rom-com spark, and gentle digs at the drama industry, A Dream Within a Dream feels like a breath of fresh air. Fans are already praising Liu Yuning and Li Yitong for their sizzling chemistry, and the offbeat script is clearly striking a chord with anyone sick of the same old drama tropes.
In short, people are simply misunderstanding the difference between plagiarism and parody. A Dream Within a Dream is poking fun at tired drama tropes, not pinching ideas outright, and that’s what’s made it such a hit.
