A Couple of Lies: Who Is Jake Reed? What Really Happened to the Missing Tourist?

Netflix's A Couple of Lies uses a missing tourist to turn an already uncomfortable holiday into a mystery full of suspicion, strange discoveries and increasingly awkward questions. When Carl and Helene exchange their Stockholm archipelago home with Scarlett and Adam's Sicilian villa, they expect a peaceful break before welcoming their first child. Instead, Carl finds himself surrounded by unsettling noises, dead rats and missing-person posters featuring a Canadian tourist named Jake Reed. Before long, he begins wondering whether his forgotten trip to Sicily has something to do with the man's disappearance. And considering how little he remembers, it is hardly the sort of holiday souvenir anyone wants to bring home.

Jake Reed initially appears to be at the centre of the mystery, particularly as Carl discovers that the 25-year-old Canadian tourist disappeared in the same region around the time he supposedly visited the villa. The problem is that Carl has absolutely no recollection of being there.

His wife, Helene, insists that he made a brief trip to the property, while information on his phone appears to support her account. Carl remembers travelling to Palermo for a business meeting, but nothing about visiting Adam and Scarlett's home. It is an uncomfortable contradiction, especially for someone who is already struggling with memory blackouts.

The more Carl investigates, the less comfortable he becomes with the situation. He starts questioning whether his missing memories conceal something serious, particularly when he considers the possibility that he might have been involved in Jake Reed's disappearance. The police are not particularly reassured by his explanations either. From their perspective, Carl's inability to remember his visit, combined with Helene's account of his movements, makes him a rather convenient person to investigate.

There is also the possibility that Adam and Scarlett know considerably more than they are letting on. Carl begins wondering whether the couple deliberately arranged the house swap to distance themselves from something that happened at their property. Perhaps they have a connection to Reed's disappearance, and perhaps Carl and Helene have been brought into the situation for a reason. Naturally, the increasingly suspicious atmosphere does little to help Carl relax. A quiet holiday in Sicily is apparently too much to ask.

Things become considerably worse when Carl discovers a dead body inside a well surrounded by rats. The discovery raises immediate questions about the identity of the victim, especially when the condition of the remains makes identification difficult. One of the rats has swallowed a ring belonging to the dead man, and Carl later comes across it during a walk. The discovery gives him another reason to believe that the missing tourist may have met a terrible fate.

However, rather than immediately reporting everything to the police, Carl decides to keep the discovery to himself for the time being. He is worried about how the situation might affect his reputation and an important business agreement that is approaching. It is hardly the most sensible decision, but Carl appears increasingly desperate to prevent his already complicated life from becoming even more difficult. Unfortunately, keeping quiet does not make a dead body disappear.

During an important meeting, Carl finally receives information that changes the direction of the entire mystery. Jake Reed has actually been found alive and well. The missing Canadian tourist was simply lost, and his disappearance had caused considerable concern in the local community. His safe return is obviously welcome news for his family and the region, particularly because tourism plays an important role in the local economy.

But there is one rather significant problem: if Jake Reed is alive, who is the man in the well?

The answer is Tom, Scarlett's brother. His identity completely changes how the events surrounding the Sicilian villa should be understood. Tom was killed by Helene and Adam, who had also arranged for Carl to become the person blamed for the crime. What initially appeared to be a mystery involving a missing Canadian tourist was actually part of a much more complicated scheme involving the two couples.

This is where Jake Reed's real purpose in the story becomes clear. He is a red herring, deliberately drawing attention away from the actual victim and keeping both Carl and the audience focused on the wrong question. By presenting Reed as a possible murder victim, the series encourages viewers to investigate the connection between the missing tourist, Carl's memory problems and the suspicious behaviour of Adam and Scarlett.

The decision also helps maintain uncertainty about which couple is responsible for the strange events. At the beginning, the story establishes that Carl and Helene have never met Adam and Scarlett before arranging the house exchange. Without an existing relationship between them, neither couple has an obvious reason to trust the other. This makes Reed's disappearance an effective distraction, giving viewers another possible explanation for the increasingly disturbing discoveries.

Once Tom's identity is revealed, however, the mystery starts moving in a different direction. The missing tourist is no longer the central piece of the puzzle, and the real connections between the characters become much easier to understand. What seemed like a straightforward investigation into a disappearance turns out to be a carefully constructed attempt to hide a murder and place the blame elsewhere.

Jake Reed was never the victim in the well, nor was his disappearance the crime Carl needed to solve. His storyline exists primarily to mislead viewers while the series gradually reveals what happened to Tom. It is a clever way of keeping the audience uncertain, particularly because Carl's unreliable memory makes it difficult to know which details can be trusted.

Personally, Jake Reed's storyline is one of the more effective distractions in A Couple of Lies. The series gives viewers just enough information about the missing tourist to make him seem important, while Carl's memory problems add another layer of uncertainty. It is also amusing how quickly a relaxing house swap turns into an investigation involving missing people, suspicious homeowners and a body in a well. Apparently, checking the property description before booking a holiday is no longer enough.

The reveal that Reed is alive works because it forces viewers to reconsider the clues they have been following. However, the real strength of the twist is Tom's identity and the discovery of the plan involving Carl. Rather than relying entirely on a surprise reveal, the series uses the false trail to keep its central mystery moving. It may not be the most complicated plot twist ever written, but it certainly makes the Sicilian holiday memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Ultimately, Jake Reed's disappearance is a carefully placed distraction in Netflix's A Couple of Lies, with the real mystery centred on Tom's death and the plan to frame Carl. His safe return also exposes how easily the investigation can be led in the wrong direction when everyone is working with incomplete information. What did you think of the Jake Reed twist? Did you suspect he was a red herring, or did you genuinely believe Carl might have been connected to his disappearance? Share your thoughts and let us know whether you saw Tom's identity coming.
