| Bass x Machina Season 2: Plot Predictions, Returning Cast and Everything We Know So Far. |
Netflix’s Bass x Machina has plenty of unfinished business, even after Bass Reeves saved Central City from a devastating superweapon. The animated Western has already delivered an unusual combination of frontier adventure, family drama, political tensions and futuristic engineering, but its first season may only have scratched the surface of what this world can offer. Although Netflix has yet to confirm a second season, there are several interesting directions the story could explore if it returns. From Bass adjusting to his new position as a US Army Marshal to Ahni questioning his decisions, the next chapter could put its central characters through an entirely different set of challenges. And, naturally, the West probably has a few more dangerous inventions waiting to cause trouble.
The first season follows Bass Reeves, a Black bounty hunter living in an alternative version of 1874 America, where the familiar atmosphere of the Old West meets extraordinary technological advancements. Despite his dangerous profession, Bass remains a devoted family man whose biggest concern is keeping his wife and children safe. Just as he approaches retirement, the US Army gives him an assignment that changes everything: find and extract Eugene Starr, a missing White scientist whose disappearance has attracted the attention of several powerful groups.
Bass eventually joins forces with Eugene's niece, Dana Starr, an exceptionally talented aspiring engineer. Their journey takes them through unforgiving landscapes filled with dangerous enemies, questionable alliances and technological discoveries. Confederate loyalists are among those searching for Eugene, making an already difficult mission considerably more complicated. It is hardly the peaceful retirement Bass might have imagined.
The season finale leaves several characters in a promising position. Bass risks his life to save Central City from the Colossus, an enormously destructive superweapon. Lighthorse and Rivenbark face consequences for their aggressive actions, while Ahni begins accepting Bass as her father and comes to terms with her identity. Dana also embraces her biracial heritage and reunites with Eugene to continue running their hardware shop. Meanwhile, Glory gives birth to another child, bringing a new addition to the Reeves household and welcoming Ahni into the family.
Bass also earns a significant new position as the first Black Marshal of the US Army, giving him an opportunity to influence the system from within. However, his promotion could become one of the biggest sources of conflict if the series continues. Having authority and knowing how to use it are two very different things, after all.
If Netflix renews the series in a timely manner, a second season could potentially arrive in the second half of 2027. However, this is only a speculative release window, not an announced schedule. For now, viewers will have to wait for an official decision before making any retirement plans around Bass Reeves.
One of the most interesting possibilities for Bass x Machina Season 2 involves the complicated relationship between Bass and Ahni. Their reunion at the end of the first season provides an emotional turning point, but it does not mean they suddenly agree on everything. In fact, their differences in how they view justice and authority could become even more important as the story develops.
Ahni is particularly critical of Bass accepting his position as Marshal. From her perspective, working within an institution that has historically served White interests does not necessarily bring meaningful change. She believes Bass risks becoming part of the very system he should be challenging. Bass, meanwhile, sees his new authority as an opportunity to improve things for people who have rarely been given a fair opportunity.
This disagreement could create a serious divide between father and daughter. Bass wants to use his position to protect people, while Ahni may believe that genuine progress requires a more radical approach. Neither perspective is particularly easy to dismiss, which makes their conflict more interesting than a straightforward disagreement between two characters.
There is also the possibility that Ahni's supernatural abilities could become a source of concern. She has not been presented as someone naturally inclined towards violence, but her experiences and growing understanding of injustice could influence how she uses her powers. If she begins taking matters into her own hands, Bass might eventually face an uncomfortable decision between protecting his daughter and fulfilling his responsibilities as Marshal.
Such a storyline would give the series an opportunity to explore the limits of family loyalty. Bass has spent much of his life protecting those closest to him, but what happens when someone he loves becomes involved in a situation he cannot simply resolve through negotiation? It could be one of the most emotionally challenging developments in the potential second season.
Dana's future also deserves considerable attention. Having spent much of her life presenting herself as a White girl, she is now beginning to understand her identity from a different perspective. Her decision to embrace her biracial heritage is an important development, but it does not mean navigating the world will suddenly become straightforward.
Season 2 could explore how Dana balances her personal identity with her ambitions as an engineer. Her intelligence and technical abilities have already made her an essential part of Bass' journey, yet there is still plenty of room to develop her character beyond being his travelling companion. Running the hardware shop with Eugene gives her a fresh start, but it would be surprising if she spent the entire next season quietly fixing equipment while everyone else gets involved in dangerous adventures.
Her partnership with Bass could also return if another major threat emerges. The two have already demonstrated that their different abilities complement each other. Bass brings experience, determination and an understanding of the frontier, while Dana offers technical knowledge and inventive thinking. Their next adventure could challenge both characters in ways they have not previously experienced.
Meanwhile, Eugene's role could expand beyond that of a scientist who needs rescuing. His knowledge of advanced technology may prove essential if new inventions begin appearing across the West. The series has established that scientific discoveries can have enormous consequences, and Eugene could become an important figure in determining how those discoveries are used.
Another exciting possibility is the introduction of new characters and villains who could make the second season feel considerably bigger. Bass x Machina has never relied solely on its central characters to keep the story moving. Its supporting cast brings different perspectives to the show's questions about identity, political power, technological progress and freedom.
If the series returns, Brian Tyree Henry could reprise his voice role as Bass Reeves, while Tati Gabrielle may return as Dana Starr. Chaske Spencer could also be back as Lighthorse, alongside Cree Summer as Ahni and Currie Graham as Rivenbark. Janelle Monáe may once again voice Glory, while Starletta DuPois could return as Etta.
Ahni, in particular, could become an increasingly important figure rather than remaining primarily connected to Bass' personal storyline. Her relationship with her heritage and supernatural abilities provides an opportunity to explore a wider part of the show's fictional world.
One possible direction would involve introducing more members of the Choctaw Tribe and exploring whether others possess abilities similar to Ahni's. The first season offers glimpses of supernatural elements, but there is clearly room to investigate their origins, limitations and significance. Introducing additional characters with different abilities could also prevent Ahni's storyline from becoming too predictable.
New antagonists would be equally welcome. Bass' appointment as Marshal is likely to attract attention from people who do not appreciate his new authority. Some might challenge his position directly, while others could attempt to manipulate the political and technological systems around him. The West is a vast setting, offering plenty of opportunities to introduce ambitious inventors, powerful figures and individuals with questionable ideas about progress.
Etta could also have a more substantial role if the story explores the growing relationship between technology and everyday life. Her engineering knowledge already fits naturally into the show's unusual setting, and new inventions could give her plenty of opportunities to demonstrate what she can do. There is no shortage of problems in this version of the West, particularly when someone keeps finding new ways to build machines capable of causing enormous trouble.
Beyond its character relationships, Aianhli could become one of the biggest mysteries explored in Bass x Machina Season 2. The unusual metal plays an important role in the technological foundations of the series, but viewers have not yet seen everything it might be capable of achieving.
The Colossus demonstrates just how dangerous advanced materials and engineering can become when placed in the wrong hands. However, it is possible that the weapon represents only a fraction of Aianhli's potential. A second season could introduce new applications, previously unknown properties and even more powerful inventions built using similar materials.
There could also be other metals with properties that surpass Aianhli, creating a new race among inventors, military organisations and individuals seeking control over advanced technology. Such discoveries would naturally attract people with ambitions similar to those of Lighthorse and Rivenbark. The difference is that the next group of antagonists could have access to inventions even more difficult to contain.
Bass might therefore find himself dealing with threats that extend well beyond ordinary law enforcement. His responsibilities as Marshal could involve protecting communities from dangerous experiments, preventing advanced weapons from falling into the wrong hands and confronting people who see technological progress as an opportunity to gain absolute control.
The series could also expand its supernatural mythology by connecting Aianhli's properties with Ahni's abilities. Whether these elements share a common origin remains an interesting question. Exploring that relationship could provide a more substantial explanation of the world while introducing mysteries that extend beyond the familiar Western setting.
And if the Colossus was considered the ultimate technological threat during the first season, there is no guarantee that it will remain the most powerful invention in the story. A second season could introduce machines capable of transforming entire communities, creating even greater challenges for Bass and his allies.
My opinion is that Bass x Machina has considerably more potential than a single season can comfortably explore. The strongest part of the series is not simply its futuristic machinery or Western atmosphere, but the way its characters respond to a world that refuses to play by familiar rules. Bass becoming a Marshal is an especially promising development because it gives him a new kind of responsibility, while Ahni's disagreement with his decision creates a conflict that feels personal rather than artificially manufactured.
Dana also deserves more room to demonstrate her engineering abilities without constantly being placed in someone else's storyline. Personally, I would rather see the second season develop these relationships properly than introduce endless villains just for the sake of bigger battles. The Colossus was impressive, but character development should remain the real attraction. There is plenty of room for both.
Ultimately, Bass x Machina Season 2 could expand the franchise through new characters, complicated family relationships, unexplored supernatural abilities and increasingly ambitious technological discoveries. Its alternative version of the American West offers a setting with plenty of possibilities, and Bass' new position as Marshal gives the writers a natural way to introduce fresh conflicts without abandoning the story's original identity.
Of course, none of these developments is confirmed, and Netflix has yet to announce a renewal. Still, the first season leaves enough unanswered questions to make another chapter worthwhile. Would you like to see Bass and Ahni's relationship take centre stage, or would you rather watch Dana uncover the full potential of Aianhli? Share your thoughts and let us know which storyline you would most like to see if the series returns.
