| Love Is Blind Netherlands: Why Yasemin Kuskal and Roël van Klaveren Split. |
Yasemin Kuskal and Roël van Klaveren ended their relationship during the first season of Love is Blind: Netherlands after realising that their emotional connection did not develop into the romantic spark they had hoped for. The pair had chosen each other in the pods and arrived at the Zanzibar retreat with plenty of optimism, but once they were together in the real world, the relationship started to feel more like a friendship than a future marriage.
Their connection had actually begun on a promising note. Roël’s conversations in the pods were memorable for several reasons, not least because his monitor lizard inevitably became part of the introduction. Rather than being alarmed by the unusual pet situation, Yasemin was curious and said she liked animals. Somehow, a monitor lizard turned out to be less of a red flag than the usual dating-show complications.
As their conversations continued, Yasemin and Roël found common ground in their past experiences. Yasemin spoke about being cheated on in a previous relationship and explained why trusting someone again was difficult for her. Roël had his own experience of betrayal, which made their conversations feel more personal and helped create the sense that they understood each other beyond the usual pod small talk.
Neither had initially been focused exclusively on the other. Roël was also building a connection with Claire, while Yasemin was getting closer to Miguel Garcia. Eventually, however, both decided to abandon those other relationships and pursue each other. In the pods, their decision appeared to make sense, and they entered the next stage of the experiment believing they had found something worth testing outside the walls of the dating experiment.
The problem became clearer once they reached Zanzibar. Although Yasemin and Roël seemed comfortable spending time together, Yasemin admitted that she still wasn't feeling the romantic spark she expected. Comfort can be a solid foundation for a relationship, but in Love is Blind, couples are also expected to determine whether that comfort can survive the physical and emotional realities of life together.
There was another complication hanging over Yasemin. She acknowledged that she had never properly closed the door on her connection with Miguel. That unfinished business left her questioning whether she had made the right decision in the pods. Roël was the person she had chosen, but Miguel was still occupying a corner of her thoughts, which is hardly ideal when you're supposed to be planning a future with someone else.
The turning point came after the pair spent time with the other couples. Watching those relationships develop gave Yasemin and Roël something to compare their own connection with, and the contrast apparently made their situation easier to understand. Rather than pretending everything was perfect because they had already chosen each other, they had a candid conversation about what was missing.
Yasemin eventually admitted that she felt more like a friend to Roël than a romantic partner and that she did not feel physically attracted to him. Roël accepted what she was saying, and the two reached the same conclusion: continuing the relationship would not be fair to either of them. There was no dramatic betrayal or explosive argument. Sometimes, unfortunately for reality television, two people simply realise they are better suited to being friends.
Their breakup was relatively warm considering the circumstances. Yasemin and Roël remained positive towards one another and wished each other well as they went their separate ways. It was a surprisingly mature ending for a relationship that had begun under the very unusual pressure of choosing a potential spouse without seeing them.
After ending things with Roël, Yasemin decided to explore her connection with Miguel again. That decision made sense within the story because she had already admitted that she had not fully dealt with their unfinished connection. Whether that relationship could develop further was then a separate question, but at least Yasemin was no longer trying to force a relationship simply because it had worked in the pods.
My take is that Yasemin and Roël's breakup is one of those Love is Blind moments that feels far more believable than the dramatic twists the format can sometimes produce. They clearly liked each other, understood some of each other's experiences and were comfortable together, but none of that automatically creates attraction. Roël could be a perfectly decent match on paper and still not be Yasemin's person. The monitor lizard probably wasn't the issue either, despite what reality-TV logic might have us believe.
Their decision to stop rather than drag the relationship towards an inevitable wedding was arguably the more honest part of their story. Yasemin's lingering feelings for Miguel also made the situation messier, but she was upfront about them instead of quietly pretending everything was fine. In a show built around rushing enormous romantic decisions, admitting that friendship is all you have is actually quite refreshing.
Ultimately, Yasemin Kuskal and Roël van Klaveren broke up because they recognised that their relationship lacked the romantic and physical attraction needed to move forward, while Yasemin also still had unresolved feelings about Miguel.
Their story shows that choosing someone in the pods is only the beginning; once the experiment moves into everyday life, the chemistry has to survive outside the fantasy. Do you think Yasemin made the right call by ending things with Roël, or should they have given the relationship more time? And what did you make of her decision to reconnect with Miguel?
