| Is Mochi Safe in The Storm? Inside the Film’s Most Stressful Mystery. |
No, Mochi the dog does not die in The Storm. Despite disappearing into a brutal snowstorm and leaving his owner, Nattis, desperately searching for answers, the beloved pet survives and eventually finds his way back to her. The 2026 film puts the poor animal at the centre of an increasingly chaotic evening, turning what should have been a pleasant dinner among old friends into a night filled with suspicion, panic and some spectacularly poor decision-making.
At the heart of the confusion is Ossi, who agrees to look after Mochi but accidentally loses him outside. What follows is a chain reaction of misunderstandings that convinces several characters that the worst has happened, even though the truth is considerably less tragic. Mochi makes it through the storm alive, but the humans around him manage to create more than enough trouble without his help.
The trouble begins during the soft opening of Caroline and Filip’s bed and breakfast, where a group of longtime friends gathers for a celebratory dinner. Nattis arrives with Mochi as her plus one, making him arguably the most innocent guest at the table. She is the only single person in the group, but her decision to bring her dog proves far more consequential than anyone could have predicted.
Ossi, meanwhile, is still trying to maintain his reputation as the group's resident class clown. When he volunteers to take Mochi outside to relieve himself, he presumably expects a routine task rather than the beginning of a full-blown disaster. Unfortunately, the weather has other plans. Strong winds sweep through the area, and Ossi loses track of the dog in the snowstorm.
Realising what has happened, Ossi is immediately overwhelmed by guilt. The situation becomes even worse when he discovers that Mochi's leash contains a tracker, meaning Nattis can check her pet's supposed location without immediately suspecting that anything has gone wrong. The problem is that the leash is still with Ossi, while Mochi is outside in the storm.
As far as the tracking device is concerned, everything appears perfectly normal. In reality, the dog is missing, the weather is getting worse, and Ossi is running out of ways to hide his mistake. It is a particularly unfortunate combination of circumstances, made worse by the fact that telling the truth would probably be the sensible thing to do. Naturally, he struggles to manage that simple option.
Ossi eventually tries to get rid of the leash, hoping to remove the evidence connecting him to Mochi's disappearance. His escape plan does not go particularly well. He reaches the suites but runs into Filip, forcing him to throw the tracker-equipped leash into a room occupied by Stefan, the van driver.
Stefan is now stuck with an object that could explain where Mochi has gone, although he has no idea why it has suddenly become his problem. Ossi then admits to Filip that he has lost the dog. At first, Filip agrees to keep the secret, apparently believing that the situation can still be managed quietly. That promise becomes considerably harder to maintain when he discovers something suspicious in the kitchen.
After the first course, Filip finds a large amount of white fur and discarded entrails in the rubbish. His mind immediately jumps to the worst possible conclusion, particularly because Chef Petter, his brother-in-law, is responsible for the food. Filip begins to suspect that the dinner may have involved something far more disturbing than the guests bargained for. In reality, Mochi has not been cooked or harmed in the preparation of the meal. The white fur belongs to an entirely different animal-shaped object, and the explanation is almost embarrassingly mundane compared with the panic it causes.
Earlier in the evening, Ninni and Nattis have an argument that ends with Nattis throwing wine over the other woman. The incident leaves Ninni's pristine white outfit stained, including her fashionable white Fendi fur boa. Still furious about the confrontation, Ninni attempts to wash the accessory in the kitchen but fails to remove the damage.
Frustrated, she throws the boa into the rubbish bin. When Filip later discovers the white fur among the discarded remains, he mistakes it for evidence that Mochi has met a grim fate. It is a classic case of jumping to conclusions, although the circumstances are sufficiently chaotic to make the misunderstanding almost understandable. Almost.
Neither Filip nor Ossi realises what has actually happened with the boa. Both men become convinced that Mochi is dead, leaving Ossi even more frightened of admitting the truth to Nattis. Rather than coming clean, he becomes involved in the increasingly tense search for answers.
The situation is now built on several layers of misinformation: Nattis believes her dog is still somewhere nearby, Ossi fears he has caused the animal's death, and Filip thinks the kitchen rubbish contains evidence of something far worse than a ruined designer accessory. All the while, the real Mochi is still out in the freezing weather, presumably having a much less complicated evening than the people searching for him.
Nattis eventually notices that Mochi's leash has ended up inside Stefan's locked room. Her discovery convinces her that the driver knows more about the disappearance than he is admitting. When she enters the room, she accidentally strikes Stefan with the door, knocking him unconscious. Initially concerned about his condition, she enlists Ossi's help. However, her priorities quickly change when she spots the leash and starts questioning why it is there. Instead of treating Stefan as an unfortunate bystander, Nattis becomes convinced that he is withholding information about her missing pet.
The misunderstanding escalates into an interrogation that quickly gets out of hand. Nattis ties Stefan to a chair and demands to know where Mochi is. When he cannot provide an answer, she threatens to cut off his fingers with a blade. It is a remarkable escalation for a missing-dog investigation, even by the standards of a dinner party that has already gone spectacularly wrong.
Stefan has been caught in the middle of a situation he does not understand, while Ossi watches the confrontation unfold with the knowledge that he is responsible for the original mistake. Every moment he stays silent makes the situation worse, and the increasingly desperate Nattis is not exactly creating an atmosphere in which anyone would feel comfortable asking for a timeout.
Eventually, Ossi can no longer tolerate the guilt. As Nattis appears increasingly serious about carrying out her threat, he finally confesses that he was the one who lost Mochi. His admission catches her off guard, but the confrontation has already gone too far. In the confusion, Nattis accidentally cuts Stefan's index finger, adding another emergency to an evening that has somehow managed to produce a missing dog, a suspected culinary crime and an injured van driver. The guests are left panicking until Filip arrives and takes control of the situation. He contacts emergency services, who advise him to keep the severed finger on ice until medical help can arrive.
Filip then heads into the kitchen to find snow, only to discover that the refrigerator has run out. With few alternatives, he opens a window to collect some from outside. That small decision finally brings the evening's most important missing guest back into the story. Mochi suddenly comes through the open window, alive and apparently in one piece, having survived the snowstorm and found his way back indoors. The reunion brings an end to the uncertainty surrounding Nattis' pet, although it does little to undo the damage caused by the group's increasingly disastrous attempts to locate him.
Mochi's return confirms that the frightening theories surrounding his disappearance were wrong. He was never secretly prepared for dinner, and Stefan was not hiding the dog in his room. The confusion began with Ossi's mistake, grew through his reluctance to confess and became even more absurd when Filip misidentified Ninni's discarded Fendi boa. By the time Mochi reappears, the group has managed to turn a lost pet into an evening of accusations, threats and an unexpected medical emergency. The dog, meanwhile, simply walks back into the cabin. If there is a lesson here, it is that sometimes the most sensible character in a room is the one who cannot speak.
My opinion is that Mochi's storyline gives The Storm its most effective combination of tension and dark comedy. The film knows exactly how to exploit the audience's concern for a vulnerable animal, allowing the disappearance to feel genuinely worrying without making the outcome unnecessarily bleak. Ossi's behaviour is frustrating, particularly because a straightforward confession could have prevented much of the chaos, but that weakness also makes the escalating misunderstandings believable.
Filip's mistaken identification of the Fendi boa is ridiculous in precisely the way a pressure-cooker comedy needs, while Nattis' increasingly extreme response adds another layer of absurdity. The eventual reunion works because it releases the tension without pretending that the characters' actions were sensible. Mochi's survival is a relief, but the humans have some serious explaining to do. Honestly, the dog deserves a quieter holiday, a better minder and considerably fewer dinner invitations.
Ultimately, Mochi survives The Storm and reunites with Nattis, providing a welcome resolution to one of the film's most nerve-racking storylines. His disappearance exposes the group's poor judgement, fractured friendships and remarkable ability to turn a manageable problem into a catastrophe.
Ossi's guilt, Filip's mistaken suspicions and Nattis' determination to find her pet all drive the evening towards an increasingly chaotic conclusion, but Mochi's return offers the reassurance viewers have been waiting for. What did you make of the misunderstanding involving the Fendi boa, and do you think Ossi should have confessed sooner? Share your thoughts on Mochi's survival and the film's chaotic ending.
