Julia and Aidan’s New Year’s kiss leaves their future together uncertain in Netflix’s Minimum Wage, raising a big question about whether the two co-workers will become a couple or whether their friendship is about to get considerably more awkward. Created by Jeremy Garelick and Will Phelps, the comedy follows a group of teenagers working at The Slice Club, a struggling pizzeria where workplace drama and questionable decisions are practically part of the job description.

While the franchise’s other branches are making money, this particular outlet is struggling badly enough to attract the attention of its CEO. Yet beneath the financial troubles, the employees have built genuine friendships, making their personal problems just as important as the business itself. By the end of episode 14, Julia, Aidan and Tommy find themselves caught in a romantic mess that could change their relationships for good.

Julia and Aidan’s kiss does not guarantee a happy ending

The first part of Minimum Wage concludes with Julia and Aidan sharing a kiss on New Year’s Eve, setting up what could become the series’ first workplace romance. However, a kiss is one thing, and an actual relationship is quite another. Julia appears willing to kiss Aidan, but the series has yet to establish whether her feelings run deeper than the moment itself. That distinction matters because Aidan seems much more certain about their potential romance than Julia does.

So far, much of the situation has been presented through Aidan’s perspective. His growing interest in Julia develops after she takes a particular interest in his nickname, leading him to believe that she might see him as more than a friend.

It is an understandable conclusion for someone hoping to find a romantic connection, although it is hardly the strongest evidence ever presented in the history of dating. A little attention can feel significant when you already have a crush, but that does not automatically mean the other person feels the same way.

Aidan’s nickname storyline also reveals something about his need to feel closer to his friends. His efforts to find a nickname are not simply about coming up with something amusing; they reflect his desire to build stronger personal connections with the people around him. When Julia gets involved, he interprets her enthusiasm as a sign that she might be interested in him romantically. From there, his feelings begin to develop, and the possibility of a relationship starts to look increasingly appealing.

However, Julia’s willingness to kiss Aidan does not confirm that she is in love with him. She might be interested in exploring something new, or the kiss could have been an impulsive decision that she has not fully considered. Until the series gives viewers a clearer understanding of her feelings, Aidan's confidence remains largely based on his own interpretation of events. The second part of Minimum Wage will need to address that uncertainty before anyone can confidently declare them the next great television couple.

Tommy’s feelings for Julia make everything more complicated

Just when Julia and Aidan’s relationship appears to be moving in a new direction, Tommy enters the picture with plans of his own. He intends to confess his feelings for Julia, only to discover her kissing Aidan. Assuming that his friends are already together, Tommy retreats without getting the chance to explain himself. It is an unfortunate moment for him, particularly because his feelings for Julia have been developing throughout the series.

The show has offered several clues that Tommy cares about Julia more deeply than he admits. In the opening episode, he volunteers to get fired if doing so will allow Julia to keep her job. That decision suggests a level of loyalty that goes beyond ordinary workplace friendship, even if Tommy is not ready to put his feelings into words. His actions repeatedly indicate that Julia matters to him, although he seems determined to keep that affection under wraps.

Their pretend date involving Julia’s fictional identity, Francine, provides another important clue. During that storyline, Tommy and Julia share moments that hint at a connection neither seems entirely prepared to acknowledge. Julia is particularly affected when Tommy chooses to remain partnered with John, suggesting that her attachment to him may be stronger than she wants to admit.

The complication is that Julia still struggles to separate her feelings for Tommy from those associated with Francine. Because their connection develops through a fictional persona, she has not fully recognised what it might mean for her real-life relationships. That confusion makes it difficult for her to decide whether Tommy is someone she genuinely wants to pursue or simply someone she feels close to in a particular situation.

Now that Tommy and Julia are no longer together in the same romantic sense as before, there is room for their relationship to develop. However, Aidan’s involvement means that any progress could come at the expense of another friendship. Tommy has already experienced the disappointment of believing Julia has chosen someone else, while Aidan may have no idea that he has stepped into a situation that has been building for much longer than his own crush.

Will Julia choose Aidan or Tommy in Minimum Wage?

At this stage, Minimum Wage has not established whether Julia and Aidan will ultimately become a couple. Their New Year’s kiss creates the possibility of a romance, but Tommy’s feelings remain a significant obstacle. More importantly, Julia herself has yet to make a clear decision about what she wants.

Aidan offers a relationship built on trust and friendship, and his growing affection for Julia could develop into something meaningful if she feels the same way. Tommy, meanwhile, shares a longer and more emotionally complicated connection with her. Their history provides a different kind of chemistry, one that has been hinted at through small gestures, awkward moments and feelings that neither character has fully confronted.

Julia’s biggest challenge may not be choosing between two boys at all. She first needs to understand her own emotions and stop confusing her feelings for Tommy with those attached to Francine. Until she works that out, neither potential relationship has a particularly stable foundation.

The next part of the series could therefore focus on more than deciding which couple viewers should root for. It could explore how the three friends handle disappointment, honesty and the possibility that their relationships may never return to the way they were. After all, working together is already complicated enough without turning every shift into an emotional obstacle course.

My opinion: Julia and Aidan’s romance could work, but Tommy remains the more interesting choice

Honestly, Julia and Aidan have potential, but their kiss feels more like the beginning of a problem than the start of a convincing romance. Aidan’s feelings are understandable, yet he appears to have built much of his confidence around Julia showing interest in his nickname. That is a rather flimsy foundation for a relationship, even by sitcom standards. Tommy, on the other hand, has demonstrated his affection through actions, particularly when he puts Julia’s job ahead of his own comfort.

Their connection also has the advantage of a longer history, making their unresolved feelings more compelling. Still, Julia should not be expected to choose Tommy simply because he seems like the obvious romantic option. She needs to understand what she wants without being pushed into a decision by either boy. Aidan deserves that honesty, too. The best outcome would be a relationship that develops naturally rather than one decided by a single kiss.

Ultimately, whether Julia and Aidan end up together remains uncertain, and Tommy’s involvement makes a straightforward romantic resolution unlikely. The next episodes will need to reveal whether Julia genuinely wants to pursue Aidan, whether her feelings for Tommy finally become clear, or whether all three decide that preserving their friendship matters more than starting a relationship.

Whatever happens, the situation promises plenty of awkward conversations for a group that already spends its working hours dealing with a struggling pizzeria.
