| Korean Drama Between Steps Episode 5 Recap and Review. |
Between Steps episode 5 puts Yoo-jin and Min-jae’s increasingly complicated relationship under pressure, mixing workplace frustrations, bruised confidence and romantic confusion with a birthday celebration that takes an unexpectedly personal turn. Yoo-jin struggles to prove she belongs in the laboratory, while Min-jae’s attempts to help her keep getting lost somewhere between his good intentions and his spectacularly poor communication skills.
Their awkward dynamic becomes even more interesting when Yoo-jin claims she cannot remember their kiss, only to show signs that the encounter might have stayed on her mind. Meanwhile, a new computer, an encouraging professor and a thoughtful birthday present bring fresh developments, with the episode saving one of its most significant emotional moments for the end.
The episode opens with Min-jae and Yoo-jin kissing in an alleyway, only for her father, Lim Yong-seok, to walk past and witness the scene. He does not recognise the woman kissing Min-jae as his own daughter, which is probably fortunate for everyone involved. Still, the unexpected discovery leaves him with something to discuss at home, where he tells Yoo-jin’s mother, Mi-young, about the couple he spotted. It is the sort of conversation that could become considerably more awkward if anyone ever connects the dots.
The following morning, Yoo-jin arrives at the laboratory early and starts tidying up. While cleaning, she comes across her test paper and Kim Se-jin’s, giving her an uncomfortable reminder that joining the team is only the beginning of her challenges. The other researchers soon arrive, including Se-jin, and Min-jae explains that their department may participate in the World Robot Summit (WRS). The opportunity is also the reason Professor Ahn agreed to bring two new students into the group.
Se-jin wastes little time questioning Yoo-jin’s qualifications, pointing out that she lacks the academic background he considers necessary for the work. It is hardly a warm welcome, but apparently some people treat a shared workplace like a competitive examination that never officially ends. Yoo-jin has barely settled in, and she is already being made to feel as though she must justify her presence every time she walks through the door.
Things become more frustrating when the new recruits are assigned desks. Yoo-jin discovers that she does not have a computer, while Min-jae explains that he has ordered one and that delivery will take time. She suggests sharing the available computer with Se-jin in the meantime, but Min-jae turns down the idea. His decision irritates her, particularly because she is already struggling to find her place in the team.
Min-jae later texts to ask whether she wants ice cream, apparently hoping to smooth things over. Yoo-jin rejects the offer rather rudely. Perhaps he thinks a frozen dessert can resolve a workplace disagreement, but even the finest ice cream has its limits when someone feels deliberately overlooked.
Professor Ahn arrives and meets the two new recruits before discussing the team's preparations for the World Robot Summit. The researchers are expected to develop a proposal, with Min-jae setting a deadline for a preliminary draft by the end of the month. Everyone begins working on their respective responsibilities, leaving Yoo-jin to ask Min-jae what she should do. His advice is to read research papers covering current trends.
It is a reasonable starting point, but Yoo-jin is clearly looking for more practical guidance and reassurance that she has a meaningful role to play. Instead, she is left wondering whether she has been brought into the laboratory only to spend her days trying to catch up with everyone else. The episode effectively captures the frustration of being the least experienced person in a room full of people who seem determined to remind you of it.
At the end of the day, Min-jae asks Yoo-jin whether she would like to have dinner with him. She says she is not hungry, although her stomach has apparently failed to receive the memo. They eventually head to a restaurant, where Min-jae attempts to discuss their kiss. Unfortunately for him, Yoo-jin claims she does not remember kissing him at all.
That response leaves their relationship in an awkward position. Min-jae seems to want some clarity about what happened, while Yoo-jin refuses to give him the reaction he might have expected. Whether she genuinely cannot remember or is deliberately avoiding the conversation remains an open question, particularly when her behaviour later suggests that the encounter is not quite as irrelevant to her as she claims.
On their way out, Yoo-jin returns to the computer dispute. Their conversation quickly becomes an argument, with Yoo-jin accusing Min-jae of disliking her from the beginning. She leaves for home, upset by the way he has treated her and convinced that he never wanted her in the laboratory in the first place.
Yet, on her journey home, she stops and looks into the alley where she and Min-jae kissed. The moment quietly complicates her earlier claim that she remembers nothing. If the kiss meant so little, why is she standing there thinking about it? The drama does not provide an immediate answer, allowing the uncertainty between the pair to linger.
Later, Yoo-jin takes another look at her test paper alongside Se-jin's. The comparison appears to reinforce her doubts about her abilities, as she focuses on the differences between their approaches rather than considering what her own answer might reveal about her thinking. While she struggles with the possibility that she is not good enough, Min-jae takes matters into his own hands and sets up a new computer on her desk that night.
It is a thoughtful gesture, suggesting that he has recognised at least part of the problem. Unfortunately, his kindness is about to be undermined by another misunderstanding.
The next morning, Min-jae and Yoo-jin find themselves travelling on the same bus. Professor Kang spots them walking across campus, adding another layer of tension to the connections surrounding Yoo-jin. When they arrive at the laboratory, Yoo-jin is delighted to discover the new computer waiting at her desk. For a brief moment, it looks as though Min-jae has finally understood what she needs.
Then Se-jin arrives.
Assuming the computer must be for him because he uses demanding software, Se-jin treats the arrangement as an obvious decision. Min-jae ultimately agrees, leaving Yoo-jin feeling that her needs have once again been pushed aside. The fact that the computer was installed on her desk makes the reversal particularly frustrating.
Yoo-jin reaches her breaking point and announces that she will leave the laboratory. She argues that the situation proves she is not qualified for the position, while Min-jae reminds her that he warned her the work would be difficult. His response does little to calm her down, and she storms out.
The scene exposes a major weakness in their relationship: Min-jae may be trying to help, but he repeatedly fails to understand what Yoo-jin needs from him. A computer is useful, certainly, but not when the person who needs it is made to feel like an afterthought. His intentions might be good, yet intentions alone are not particularly helpful when someone is already questioning their worth.
Min-jae follows Yoo-jin and eventually finds her crying in an empty classroom. She shows him the test papers and calls herself stupid, comparing her solution with Se-jin's and treating the differences as proof that she does not belong. Her frustration has moved beyond the missing computer. She is struggling with her confidence, and the repeated suggestions that she lacks the necessary background have begun to shape how she sees herself.
Just as Yoo-jin prepares to leave, Min-jae tells her that he wants her to meet someone he describes as being like the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter. It is an amusing comparison, but the person he introduces her to has a serious purpose.
The man is Professor Lee, who previously examined Yoo-jin's test paper for Professor Ahn and Min-jae. Rather than dismissing her answer for being different from Se-jin's, Professor Lee explains that he noticed a distinctive way of thinking in her work. He sees talent and potential in her solution, giving her the reassurance she desperately needs.
It is one of the episode's most satisfying moments because Yoo-jin finally receives an assessment based on what she can do rather than what she supposedly lacks. Professor Lee does not magically make her more experienced, but he helps her understand that approaching a problem differently is not necessarily a weakness. His encouragement gives her a reason to reconsider her decision to leave.
With her confidence beginning to recover, Yoo-jin returns to the laboratory with Min-jae. They find Seo-hyun shouting at the other boys, determined to organise an outing to Dieland, their affectionate name for an amusement park famous among the group for its intimidating rollercoaster rides. The plan is to celebrate Min-jae's birthday, and Seo-hyun is not particularly interested in hearing objections.
The change of pace brings some welcome comedy after the tension of the earlier scenes. While Seo-hyun and Min-jae go to buy food, the others discuss Min-jae's past. They reveal that he had a crush on Seo-hyun during high school and worked hard to enter the same university as her. Se-jin then wonders whether Seo-hyun has avoided dating Min-jae because of his leg.
It is a revealing conversation, although Se-jin's speculation also shows how readily people make assumptions about Min-jae's personal life. The episode has already demonstrated how much can be hidden beneath someone's outward behaviour, and this discussion hints that Min-jae's history and feelings are more complicated than his friends might realise.
As the group watches the parade, Yoo-jin persuades Min-jae to wear a dog-ear headband. She even manages to take a selfie with him before the night ends. The small gesture offers a lighter glimpse of their growing connection, allowing them to share a playful moment without the laboratory's professional pressures getting in the way.
For Yoo-jin, the outing also provides an opportunity to see Min-jae in a different setting. Away from arguments about qualifications and equipment, he becomes someone she can tease and spend time with. Their relationship still has plenty of unresolved questions, but the amusement park scenes suggest that their connection is developing beyond the initial attraction.
Later, Yoo-jin goes shopping for a watch to give Min-jae as a birthday present when she receives a call from Su-bin. The two meet, and Su-bin apologises for everything that has happened. She also tells Yoo-jin that Professor Kang is willing to forgive her if she offers an apology of her own. Yoo-jin agrees to consider the suggestion rather than making an immediate decision.
Their conversation then turns to Min-jae. Su-bin mentions that she did not realise he was disabled, and Yoo-jin appears genuinely surprised by the information. The revelation changes the context of what she knows about him, especially after their time together at Dieland and her growing interest in his personal life.
Yoo-jin subsequently returns to the laboratory and gives Min-jae his birthday present: a pair of shoes. He tries them on, and she catches a glimpse of his prosthetic leg. The moment appears to affect her deeply. Although Min-jae seems pleased with the gift, Yoo-jin struggles to manage her feelings and rushes out of the room.
The episode ends on a note of emotional uncertainty rather than a neat romantic resolution. Yoo-jin has spent much of the story trying to understand where she stands with Min-jae, only to discover that there are parts of his life she has not yet understood. Her reaction to seeing his prosthetic suggests that the revelation has unsettled her, although the scene leaves room for the reasons behind her response to become clearer later.
My opinion: Between Steps episode 5 is at its best when it lets small gestures carry the emotional weight. The missing computer might seem like an ordinary workplace problem, but for Yoo-jin, it becomes a symbol of whether anyone believes she deserves to be there. Her frustration feels understandable, even when her arguments with Min-jae become unnecessarily heated. Meanwhile, Professor Lee's assessment provides a welcome reminder that talent does not always look the same on paper.
The Dieland outing adds some much-needed fun, and the dog-ear selfie is a charming highlight amid all the misunderstandings. Min-jae, however, could benefit from learning that quietly fixing a problem is not the same as explaining himself. His feelings for Yoo-jin remain intriguing, but the drama is more convincing when their connection develops through genuine understanding rather than awkward silence. The final scene also raises questions about how Yoo-jin will respond to what she has learnt about him. Overall, this is a solid episode that balances romance, workplace tension and personal growth without losing its lighter touch.
What did you make of Between Steps episode 5? Do you think Yoo-jin genuinely forgot the kiss, or was she avoiding an uncomfortable conversation with Min-jae? And was her reaction to discovering his prosthetic leg understandable, or do you think she needs to talk to him instead of running away? Share your thoughts on the episode and where you think their relationship is heading next.
