9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 2 Recap & Review.

9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 2 turns a seemingly ordinary day in Los Angeles into a full-scale emergency, with an expanding sinkhole, a series of suspicious incidents and a discovery beneath the city that could make everything much worse. While the 118 races to save people from collapsing ground and contaminated water, Maddie investigates a trail of strange emergency calls and Athena takes on a case that leads her towards an underground mystery. There is also trouble at Eddie's house, where Buck's patience with Theo's behaviour is wearing thin. And just when the firefighters appear to have survived the latest disaster, the episode delivers a volcanic development that leaves Athena in serious trouble.

The episode opens with a family enjoying a Hollywood bus tour. Their father announces that he thinks they should move to Los Angeles, but the rest of the family is far from convinced. Apparently, even the prospect of living in the entertainment capital of the world cannot make everyone agree on a change of address. Little do they know that their sightseeing trip is about to become considerably more dramatic than anything their tour guide promised.

Elsewhere, Morty, an older man, is taking his driving test. At the same time, a man works on his laptop inside a driverless car, while a woman rehearses her lines behind the wheel. She becomes distracted while reaching for her coffee and nearly causes an accident. The vehicles come to a halt, giving everyone a moment to process the near miss. Then the ground begins to sink beneath them, and the situation quickly escalates from an awkward traffic incident into a major emergency.

The 118 arrives at the expanding sinkhole and immediately begins rescuing those trapped inside. Chimney recognises that the ground is becoming increasingly unstable and orders the team to move back before they can be pulled into the collapse themselves. The firefighters put on their harnesses and descend into the sinkhole to reach the stranded victims.

Buck focuses on rescuing the father trapped on the sightseeing bus. His daughter refuses to leave without him, making it clear that the family reunion will have to wait until the firefighters can get him out safely. Meanwhile, Hen attends to Morty and discovers that his pacemaker is malfunctioning, repeatedly delivering electric shocks. She has to act quickly to stabilise him before his condition deteriorates further.

Things become even more dangerous when an electric pole falls into the sinkhole. Fortunately, it lands on the bus rather than on the people below, sparing everyone another immediate emergency. However, the ground continues to collapse, leaving the rescue team with less time and fewer safe options. Los Angeles has plenty of traffic problems, but this is certainly not the sort of road incident anyone can solve by calling the council.

Hen manages to stop Morty's malfunctioning pacemaker by using a magnet, allowing the team to prepare him for evacuation. They attach him to a winch, but the combined weight of Morty and Harry proves too much for the equipment. With Morty needing immediate CPR, Harry decides to jump into the water to speed up the rescue.

Underwater, Harry discovers the woman whose distracted driving nearly caused the original accident. She is trapped inside her car and needs help urgently. Harry surfaces to alert Hen, and Eddie dives into the water to reach the woman. He manages to pull her free before it is too late, giving the team another life-saving success in an increasingly chaotic situation.

Meanwhile, Buck and Ravi work together to free the father from the sightseeing bus. Once they get him out, he finally explains to his daughter why he wants to move to Los Angeles. His honesty changes the conversation, and she begins to understand his reasons. When he is placed in the ambulance, she convinces the rest of the family that the move might actually be the right decision. After all that drama, at least one family discussion reaches a conclusion without another emergency services call.

The firefighters prepare to leave the scene after rescuing everyone, but the sinkhole water suddenly begins to froth before an explosion rocks the area. Thankfully, nobody is hurt. Still, the strange reaction raises questions about what is happening beneath the surface. The rescue may be over, but the underlying problem is clearly not going away.

The following day, Maddie attends a meeting at City Hall to discuss the response to the sinkhole emergency. Ty, an Emergency Management officer, leads the meeting and asks whether there were any warning signs before the ground collapsed. Maddie reveals that she noticed several suspicious 9-1-1 calls in the days leading up to the sinkhole. Ty asks her to investigate and submit a report by Monday, giving her a deadline that suddenly makes the mystery her problem to solve.

Elsewhere, Eddie rushes to the hospital after learning that Buck has been admitted. The reason is unexpectedly personal: Theo has been hurting Buck during playtime, and this time he has broken Buck's nose. Buck initially treats the injury as something he can brush off, but Eddie is not nearly as relaxed about it. Their different reactions suggest that the situation has become more serious than a simple accident, especially when children are involved and everyone is trying to decide where the line should be drawn.

Athena, meanwhile, is finding life as a newly promoted detective more difficult than expected. She keeps questioning her decisions, and May advises her to stop worrying about whether she deserves the promotion and concentrate on doing the job. It is sensible advice, although putting it into practice is clearly easier said than done.

Their conversation is interrupted when someone abandons a badly burned man at the hospital before driving away. Athena persuades Detective Newell to let her take the case. The victim's injuries prevent the team from collecting his fingerprints, leaving Athena with very little evidence to identify him. The one useful clue is an engagement ring.

Working with Newell, Athena traces the incident to the man's fellow construction workers. After they are arrested, they confess to hurting him. On paper, that sounds like a straightforward result for a detective who is still settling into her new position. However, Athena is suspicious of how quickly the men admit what happened. Newell encourages her to accept the outcome rather than overthink it, but Athena's instincts suggest there could be more to the case than the confession reveals.

The 118 receives another unusual call, this time at an aquarium where a scuba diver needs rescuing. The team discovers that the water contains sulphur and that the aquarium's animals are dying. The contaminated water is also causing burns, making the rescue particularly dangerous for anyone who comes into contact with it.

The firefighters concentrate on saving the diver before his condition worsens, while the aquarium manager struggles to explain how the water became contaminated. The incident is troubling because it does not seem to fit neatly into an isolated accident. Combined with the sinkhole and the strange emergency calls, it begins to feel as though Los Angeles is dealing with several connected problems rather than a collection of unfortunate coincidences.

At Eddie's house, Buck joins him and the children for dinner. Theo is full of energy and struggles to sit still, creating the sort of family gathering where the adults can barely finish a sentence before something else happens. When Theo plays with a ball and accidentally knocks Christopher down, the atmosphere becomes more uncomfortable.

Buck decides to leave before Eddie can confront him about Theo's behaviour. His decision suggests that he would rather avoid an awkward conversation than become involved in a disagreement about how the child should be handled. However, walking away does not resolve the problem, and the incident leaves questions about how Eddie will address Theo's actions and how much longer Buck can tolerate the situation.

Maddie returns to the suspicious emergency calls, listening through recordings from the weeks before the sinkhole appeared. She initially struggles to identify a clear pattern, but she and Chimney recognise that something about the calls does not feel right. Determined to get answers, Maddie phones Ty in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately, Ty is not interested in hearing another theory when she cannot provide concrete evidence. He dismisses her concerns because she has little more than a hunch, leaving Maddie frustrated. It is an understandable obstacle in an investigation, but it also puts her in an awkward position: she has been asked to find answers, yet the person who gave her the assignment is reluctant to listen when she raises a concern.

Athena also refuses to let her investigation rest. She stays up all night examining the van that delivered the burned man to the hospital. Her search reveals that the vehicle was parked outside a jewellery shop that had been closed a few days earlier.

She contacts the shop's owner, interrupting his holiday, and asks him about a possible theft. Initially, he insists that nothing has been stolen. That confidence disappears when he opens the vault and discovers that someone has dug through the ground into the secure room and taken the entire stock of jewellery.

The discovery changes the direction of Athena's investigation. The van, the injured man and the burglary may be connected, while the underground passage introduces another mystery beneath the city. Athena leaves her number with the shop owner before heading down to investigate the hole herself. Once underground, she discovers steam rising from the tunnel, suggesting that something far more serious is developing below Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Ty finally contacts Maddie to ask whether she has discovered anything else. The situation has taken a worrying turn: the sinkhole appears to be making a strange noise, described as screaming, and officials cannot explain what is causing it. The investigation has moved beyond a simple geological incident, and the authorities are running out of time to understand what is happening.

The 118 arrives at the sinkhole and finds Ty panicking as the situation deteriorates. The firefighters begin evacuating buildings in the surrounding area, trying to get residents to safety before the ground becomes even more unstable. Harry detects traces of sulphur dioxide, adding another warning sign to an already alarming series of discoveries.

Then the ground begins to shake, and lava erupts from below. Chimney orders everyone to find cover as the emergency escalates into a disaster that threatens the entire area. The team has spent the episode rescuing people from collapsing ground, contaminated water and dangerous conditions, but this new development presents a challenge on an entirely different scale.

The final moments leave two characters in immediate danger. Athena remains trapped in the underground tunnel as lava pours into the area, while Ty is struck by falling lava. The episode ends before the consequences become clear, leaving viewers with an urgent question about whether the team can reach them in time.

Review and opinion

9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 2 is an entertaining example of the series refusing to let its characters enjoy even five minutes of peace. The sinkhole rescue provides plenty of tension, while the aquarium emergency and Athena's investigation add enough variety to keep the episode moving. The best part is how the smaller mysteries gradually begin to feel connected, giving Maddie and Athena something meaningful to investigate beyond the usual emergency calls.

Buck's situation with Theo also adds a more personal conflict, although it could benefit from a little more breathing room among all the disasters. The episode occasionally piles on so many incidents that Los Angeles starts to resemble a city built on an extremely unreliable foundation, which, given the ending, might not be far off. Still, the cliffhanger is effective, and the volcanic twist raises the stakes considerably. It is a strong instalment that leaves viewers wanting answers without making the wait feel entirely fair.

Overall, 9-1-1 Season 10 Episode 2 balances high-pressure rescues with several developing storylines, setting up an even more dangerous situation for the next instalment. Athena's investigation, Maddie's unanswered questions and the strange events beneath Los Angeles all point towards a larger mystery that the team has yet to understand. What did you think of the episode's volcanic ending, and which storyline has caught your attention most: Athena's case, Maddie's investigation or the trouble at Eddie's house?
