| The Paper Season 3: Will Peacock Renew the Comedy Series After Season 2? |
At the time of writing, The Paper Season 3 has not been officially announced by Peacock. That is hardly surprising, considering the second season has only just finished its run. Renewal decisions tend to come down to how audiences respond to a series once the latest season has had time to find its viewers, and The Paper has the added advantage of being part of the same mockumentary universe that made its predecessor such a recognisable comedy brand. Still, being popular and being renewed are two very different things in television, because apparently viewers enjoying a show is not quite enough to settle the matter.
The Season 2 ending, however, certainly leaves the door open. The newsroom has been thrown into fresh turmoil following the disastrous fallout surrounding the time capsule, internal ethical problems and the increasingly uncomfortable attention from parent company Enervate.
Rather than neatly tying everything together, the finale leaves the Toledo Truth Teller facing a future where its independence could be seriously tested. That feels like a particularly obvious launchpad for Season 3, with the paper potentially forced to operate under much tighter corporate control while its already chaotic staff attempts to keep the publication relevant.
Then there is Ned and Mare, whose private relationship is no longer particularly private after the newsroom finds out. Their situation could become one of the biggest ongoing storylines if the series returns. Ned is the editor-in-chief, Mare is a reporter and the professional hierarchy between them is impossible to ignore once everyone knows what has been going on. A third season could explore whether they can actually maintain a working relationship without turning every newsroom meeting into an incredibly uncomfortable episode of workplace theatre.
The newspaper itself could also become the centre of the next season. The Toledo Truth Teller has spent much of the series trying to balance genuine journalism with the increasingly desperate need for attention, traffic and financial survival.
The Paper Season 3 could push that conflict even further, with Enervate demanding results while the staff attempt to preserve the identity of the paper. That creates plenty of opportunities for more investigations, questionable editorial decisions, ridiculous newsroom arguments and the sort of professional disasters that somehow become everyone else's problem.
The returning cast would also be a major part of the appeal. If Peacock orders another season, Domhnall Gleeson would be expected to return as Ned Sampson, alongside Chelsea Frei as Mare Pritti, Sabrina Impacciatore as Esmeralda Grand, Oscar Nuñez as Oscar Martinez, Melvin Gregg as Detrick Moore and Gbemisola Ikumelo as Adelola Olofin. Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key and Eric Rahill would also be strong candidates to reprise their respective roles. A Season 3 without the core newsroom ensemble would be difficult to imagine, given how much of the show's humour comes from the personalities bouncing off one another.
As for the release date, there is nothing official to work with yet. If Peacock were to renew the series relatively quickly and production could begin towards the end of 2026 or in early 2027, a 2027 return would be a reasonable possibility.
September 2027 would fit the sort of production gap viewers might expect, although television schedules have a funny habit of ignoring whatever seems reasonable on paper. Until Peacock actually confirms another season, any release date remains speculation rather than something fans should put in their calendars.
Fan reactions to the possibility of Season 3 are understandably mixed. Some viewers see the unresolved newsroom drama as a clear invitation to continue, particularly because the finale leaves several characters facing consequences that could generate much more comedy.
Others feel that the series has already made its point and that stretching the newspaper's increasingly ridiculous predicament for another season could eventually make the joke wear thin. The divide largely comes down to whether fans want more character chaos or think the story has reached a natural stopping point. There is also the practical question of whether the ensemble will remain available as the cast moves towards other projects.
My own view is that The Paper probably deserves another season, but only if the writers have a genuinely fresh direction. The newsroom setting still has plenty of comic potential, and the corporate pressure surrounding the Truth Teller could give Season 3 a stronger central conflict rather than simply repeating the same formula. Ned and Mare's newly complicated working relationship is another storyline worth exploring, provided it does not become the entire show.
At its best, The Paper works because everyone is trying to look professional while quietly making the situation much, much worse. That basic formula still has mileage. The danger is that another season could start feeling like a newspaper trying to print yesterday's headlines again. If Peacock does return, it needs new problems, sharper jokes and enough chaos to justify dragging everyone back into the newsroom.
For now, The Paper Season 3 remains unconfirmed, so there is no renewal announcement, official cast confirmation or release date to report. What we do have is a Season 2 finale that leaves several doors firmly unlocked, a cast capable of carrying another run and a story world that can easily generate more newsroom disasters.
Whether Peacock decides there is enough audience interest to open those doors is the big question. Would you actually watch Season 3 of The Paper, or did Season 2 give the newsroom a good enough farewell? Tell us whether you want the chaos to continue, which character deserves more attention, and what you think should happen next.
