Why Did I Get Married Again brings Angela and Marcus Williams’ family story into a new generation, with their daughter Jasmine preparing to marry Wesley in an elaborate destination wedding in Italy. The celebration brings much of the familiar circle back together, but two names are conspicuously absent: Patricia and Gavin, the troubled couple who have been part of the franchise since the beginning. Gavin’s disappearance is easier to explain, while Patricia’s absence raises a rather more awkward question for fans: why would she miss such an important family occasion?
Gavin Agnew is, unfortunately, no longer around to receive an invitation. His story ended in Why Did I Get Married Too?, when the architect died following a car accident. His already complicated marriage to Patricia had been under considerable strain, making his death particularly painful for her. By the time Jasmine’s wedding arrives, Gavin’s absence is therefore not a mysterious casting decision. The character is gone from the present-day story, leaving Malik Yoba with little obvious reason to return beyond the occasional flashback.
Patricia’s situation is considerably less final. Angela explains that her friend is still dealing with the loss of her son, as well as the future she once imagined for herself. Watching another generation of friends celebrate their children finding partners could understandably reopen some very old wounds. So, rather than turning up in Italy with everyone else, Patricia stays away from Jasmine and Wesley’s wedding.
There is also a perfectly respectable explanation for her absence: Patricia is on a lecture tour when the wedding takes place. Her professional commitments mean she cannot simply hop on a plane to Italy, even if the rest of the gang apparently has no trouble rearranging their lives for an expensive wedding. Still, the timing makes the excuse feel conveniently tidy. Angela’s comments suggest there is more emotion underneath it, with Patricia perhaps using work as a way to avoid an occasion she simply is not ready to face.
That distinction matters because Patricia has not been written out in the same definitive way as Gavin. Her absence leaves the door open for another appearance, particularly if the franchise continues exploring the lives of the original characters and their children. In other words, Patricia is away rather than gone, which is a very useful distinction when a film series has already demonstrated that people can disappear for years and still somehow remain part of the family conversation.
Janet Jackson’s absence is therefore less about Patricia’s story and more about the practical realities of making a film. Jackson was not available for Why Did I Get Married Again? because of scheduling conflicts, with filming taking place in autumn 2025 while she was performing her Las Vegas residency at Resorts World Theatre. Although there was some room between the different commitments, the schedules ultimately did not line up well enough for her to join the production.
That explanation also fits neatly with the way Patricia is handled in the story. Rather than inventing an irreversible development for the character, the film gives her a reason to remain elsewhere. It may not be the most dramatic solution, but it is certainly useful. Patricia can miss one wedding without the franchise having to close the door on her altogether.
Tyler Perry has also indicated that Janet Jackson’s return has not been ruled out, leaving room for Patricia to reappear if the series moves forward. That makes her absence feel more like a temporary detour than a farewell. Given how much history Patricia has with Angela, Marcus and the rest of the group, bringing her back would not require much narrative gymnastics. The franchise already has enough emotional history between these characters to justify another reunion.
Fans’ reactions to the missing characters naturally vary. Some viewers are more focused on Gavin because his death is already established, making his absence a straightforward consequence of the previous films. Others are more interested in Patricia, particularly because Janet Jackson’s involvement has been part of the franchise’s identity and her disappearance is much harder to ignore. There is also a group of fans who seem willing to accept the explanation but still wish Patricia could have found a way to attend, because apparently even a deeply complicated emotional history cannot compete with a wedding in Italy.
My take is that Patricia’s absence actually works better than it might initially seem. Janet Jackson not being available is a behind-the-scenes issue, but the film gives Patricia an emotionally believable reason to stay away, which prevents the character from feeling randomly erased. At the same time, Gavin’s fate makes Malik Yoba’s absence completely understandable rather than something that needs a convoluted explanation.
Still, Jasmine’s wedding would have been more interesting with Patricia in the room, if only because this group has never exactly specialised in keeping family celebrations calm. Her presence could have added another layer of history, tension and awkward conversations around the dinner table. Instead, viewers are left wondering whether the lecture tour was genuinely unavoidable or simply the most convenient escape route imaginable.
Ultimately, Why Did I Get Married Again? does not appear to close the book on Patricia, while Gavin’s story is firmly tied to the events of the earlier films. That gives the franchise plenty of room to bring Janet Jackson back if the schedules eventually cooperate.
For now, fans have to accept that one character is grieving from afar and the other is no longer part of the present-day story.
