Laetitia Casta and Vincent Macaigne may look like an unexpectedly convincing couple in Call My Agent! The Movie, but their romance belongs firmly to the screen. The Netflix film turns their public personas into fictional versions of themselves, creating an awkward history, unresolved feelings and plenty of tension for Andrea’s troubled production.
Their convincing chemistry has understandably sent viewers looking for clues about whether the two actors might be together in real life, especially after one very playful Cannes appearance. The answer, however, is considerably less dramatic: there is no indication that Casta and Macaigne are dating. Their complicated relationship is one of the film’s deliberately invented twists, continuing the franchise’s favourite game of mixing real celebrities with completely fictional situations.
Directed by Émilie Noblet, Call My Agent! The Movie takes place several years after the fourth and final season of the French series, with the agency’s familiar faces moving in very different directions. Andrea is determined to bring a film she co-wrote with Arlette to life, only to discover that getting a production off the ground is rather more difficult than writing the screenplay. When Laurent Lafitte abandons the project for a Hollywood opportunity, Andrea needs another leading man and eventually finds one in Vincent Macaigne.
That casting decision creates the film’s central complication because the fictional Vincent already has a tangled past with Laetitia Casta, who plays the female lead. Their characters once worked together and fell deeply for one another, before Vincent failed to turn up at a crucial moment and left their relationship in ruins. Naturally, this is not the sort of history that makes an already chaotic film shoot any easier. Because this is Call My Agent!, emotional baggage is practically another member of the cast.
The film deliberately presents both actors through exaggerated fictional versions of themselves. Vincent has withdrawn from his creative work and is introduced in a psychiatric facility, while his relationship with Laetitia becomes an important thread in the story.
None of this should be treated as a dramatisation of their actual private lives. The entire romance was created for the screenplay by Violaine Bellet, Lison Daniel and Fanny Herrero, giving the movie another opportunity to play with the line between celebrity reality and television fiction.
Macaigne has also made clear that his character is not intended to be a secret autobiography. Discussing the role with Numéro Magazine, he spoke about the amusement of playing a fictionalised version of himself and the deliberately strange gap between the actor audiences know and the character appearing on screen. His name and appearance are real, but the personality, history and romantic drama belong to the story. In other words, Netflix has borrowed the packaging and invented the contents.
Casta and Macaigne did, however, provide a real-life moment that made the fictional storyline even more entertaining. At the 79th Cannes Film Festival on 15 May 2026, the pair posed for photographers before Macaigne jokingly lifted Casta and carried her along part of the red carpet and towards the famous steps. The playful scene quickly became one of the festival's most talked-about celebrity moments, helped by the sheer absurdity of how perfectly it seemed to fit the fictional romance.
There was an especially amusing twist to all of this because the Cannes moment appears in the final montage of Call My Agent! The Movie. Within the film, Andrea’s movie La Fugitive has reached Cannes, allowing the real footage to become part of the fictional story. It is exactly the sort of reality-meets-fiction trick the franchise has built its reputation on, and it makes the original clip look suspiciously romantic when viewed through the film’s storyline.
The two actors had previously been associated with La Flamme, although they appeared in different episodes rather than sharing a substantial screen partnership. Their pairing in Call My Agent! The Movie therefore gives viewers something new rather than simply expanding an established off-screen relationship. The chemistry works because the film wants audiences to wonder where the performance ends and the supposed celebrity reality begins.
Fans have naturally reacted in different ways. Some viewers have found the pairing hilarious precisely because the movie commits so enthusiastically to the fictional romance, while others have been curious enough about their chemistry to ask whether there is anything genuine behind it. The Cannes footage only added fuel to that curiosity, because watching Macaigne casually carry Casta up the steps is almost suspiciously perfect publicity for a film built around their supposed history.
At the same time, plenty of viewers recognise the joke and see the romance for what it is: another elaborate piece of Call My Agent! mischief. The franchise has always enjoyed taking recognisable actors, borrowing elements of their public identities and then sending them into situations that would make absolutely no sense as a normal biography. The movie simply turns that formula up another notch.
My take is that the whole Casta-Macaigne storyline works best when you stop trying to investigate it like a celebrity relationship and enjoy the ridiculousness of the setup. The Cannes footage certainly makes the joke more convincing, but that is precisely why it is so effective. Netflix has essentially taken two real actors, invented an emotionally complicated past for them, then accidentally benefited from a real-life moment that looks like a deleted scene from the film. You could hardly design better promotional material.
There is also something wonderfully cheeky about making audiences question whether the chemistry is genuine when the entire point is that Call My Agent! has never been particularly interested in keeping reality and fiction in separate rooms. Personally, I think the fictional romance is much more entertaining than a real one would be because it gives the actors permission to play with their public images without pretending the story is factual. It is celebrity satire doing exactly what it should: making you briefly wonder whether you missed some enormous piece of gossip before reminding you that, yes, you are watching a movie.
Ultimately, Laetitia Casta and Vincent Macaigne are not presented as a real-life couple, and the romantic history between them exists for Call My Agent! The Movie. Their Cannes appearance was real, their chemistry is real in the sense that they are performing together, but the dramatic backstory is entirely fictional. And perhaps that is the funniest part: the film managed to turn a playful real-world moment into evidence for a romance that never actually existed.
