The situation becomes even worse when the ancient force finally breaks free during the celestial alignment. With Miss Graves incapacitated, responsibility falls to Briar, Sasha and Tegan. It is an appropriate moment for the three characters because their abilities, which initially seemed difficult to control or even dangerous, suddenly become essential to stopping the threat. Sasha uses her telepathic abilities to help shield the group, while Tegan manipulates time in a way that gives the others an opportunity to act. Briar, meanwhile, faces the biggest challenge of all: controlling her anger without suppressing it.
Instead of allowing her emotions to trigger another destructive magical outburst, Briar learns to direct that energy deliberately. Her anger becomes a source of strength rather than something that controls her. The final battle is therefore less about Briar becoming a different person and more about her finally understanding how to use the person she already is.
The three witches combine their powers and manage to force the ancient entity back into the underworld. The academy survives, and the immediate threat to the students is stopped. On paper, it is a victory. In practice, Coven Academy makes sure that nobody gets to enjoy it for very long.
Ollie dies while protecting Sasha from a lethal attack, sacrificing himself at the moment when the conflict reaches its most dangerous point. His death carries particular weight because Ollie had been caught between the supernatural factions throughout the season and represented one of the possibilities for cooperation between witches and vampires. In the final scene, Briar sees the spectral image of her mother standing at the gates of Coven Academy. It is not presented as a simple reunion. Her mother sends Briar a cryptic telepathic warning that the battle has awakened something much older: an ancestral coven of witches that intends to reclaim New Orleans.
And that is where Season 1 ends.
Not with the academy destroyed. Not with Briar defeated. Not even with the original dark force still roaming around. Instead, the season ends by revealing that the characters may have only removed one layer of a much older supernatural history.
What Does the Coven Academy Ending Mean?
The most important point is that the dark force being defeated does not mean the supernatural threat is over. The finale deliberately separates the immediate villain from the larger mythology. Briar and her friends succeed in stopping the entity that has been targeting the academy, but the magical fallout damages the boundary between worlds and wakes the ancestral witches.

Briar spends the season trying to understand where her powers came from and why her emotions are so closely tied to them. Malina Pauli Weissman's Briar Roberts finishes the season as a considerably more controlled witch than the teenager who first arrived at Coven Academy. Her biggest achievement is not defeating the dark force by brute magical strength, but learning that her anger does not have to dictate what she does with that strength.
Tiffani Thiessen's Miss Graves remains the academy's protective headmistress, although the revelations about the school's past make her position considerably more complicated. Malachi Barton's Jake ends the season in an especially interesting position after his witch-hunter family secret comes to light.
Jordan Leftwich's Sasha remains central to Briar's inner circle, with her telepathic abilities proving crucial during the final confrontation. Ora Duplass's Tegan completes the trio, using her time-bending powers when the final battle demands more than conventional magic. Louis Thresher's Ollie has perhaps the most tragic conclusion among the younger characters, sacrificing himself to save Sasha.
Devon Sawa's Mr. Cole is also tied closely to the show's larger mystery, particularly as the academy's understanding of the ancient forces surrounding it begins to fall apart.
Coven Academy understands that supernatural teen drama works best when the magic is really a metaphor for the awkward business of becoming yourself. Its strongest episodes give Briar's anger, Sasha's sensitivity and Tegan's rebellious streak a supernatural consequence, turning familiar teenage problems into something visually and emotionally larger. The New Orleans setting gives the series an appropriately shadowy personality, while the rivalry between witches, vampires and warlocks keeps the world moving beyond the central romance.
The finale is at its best when it stops trying to make Briar simply "better" and instead lets her understand herself. Her victory feels earned because it comes through control rather than a convenient power upgrade. Ollie's sacrifice adds genuine weight, while Jake's revelation gives the closing minutes a useful sting.
The series can occasionally lean too comfortably into familiar supernatural-school territory, and not every mystery receives equal attention. Still, the 10-episode run builds towards an ending that actually changes its characters and its world. It is messy, emotional and knowingly dramatic — exactly what this sort of story should be.
