Buck’s death turns Anna Pigeon Season 1 Episode 9 into one of the series’ more tangled cases, but the real trouble arrives when Anna uncovers the secret behind his death and Jesse starts investigating poisoned river water. There is also a lot going on in Anna’s personal life, because apparently solving murders is easier for her than admitting what she actually wants from a relationship.
The episode opens with a man stumbling through the forest before reaching the river. He suddenly collapses and falls to his death, with the current carrying his body away. Jesse later finds the dead man while fishing and notices something else that is hard to ignore: dead fish are floating in the river. He contacts the park rangers, turning what first looks like a straightforward death into a much bigger mystery.
At the same time, Anna finally tells her sister Molly that she slept with Stanton. Her complicated feelings about Jesse are becoming impossible to ignore, especially now that he seems ready for a serious relationship. Molly points out that Anna is perfectly capable of having one and suggests that perhaps she should stop treating emotional commitment like an approaching bear.
Anna does not exactly take that advice on board. At the crime scene, she continues avoiding Jesse and instead asks Zoey to check on him. Zoey discovers that Jesse studied geology but never completed his degree. He also knows enough about the environment to help investigate the strange deaths of the fish, so the personal drama is temporarily pushed aside for some actual detective work.
Back at the office, Frieda identifies the dead man as Buck, the son of celebrated photographer Maeve, who lives near the park. Geoff tells Anna to be careful when breaking the news because Maeve has always been supportive of the rangers. Anna heads to Maeve’s home, where she hears suspicious noises and assumes something is wrong.
It turns out the emergency is considerably less dramatic than expected. Anna walks in and finds Maeve with her lover, Lew. Awkward is probably an understatement.
Maeve is devastated when she learns Buck has died. She had been preparing a retrospective exhibition in the park, centred on the story of how her son was taken from her shortly after birth. Her story goes back to the 1970s, when pregnant teenagers were sometimes sent secretly to maternity homes. After giving birth, many of them were separated from their babies.
Maeve managed to take at least one photograph of Buck before he was taken away. Years later, his distinctive birthmark helped him recognise himself in her photographs. He eventually tracked Maeve down as a teenager, giving the pair a chance to reconnect.
But the exhibition has also attracted something much darker. Lew tells Anna that Maeve has received death threats since announcing the project. Maeve insists she is not frightened. With only a few months left to live, she says she intends to spend her remaining time doing what matters to her.
Lew takes Anna to Buck’s cabin, where she discovers what appears to be a suicide note. The coroner later finds that Buck died after ingesting hemlock, giving Anna another reason to question whether his death was really self-inflicted.
Zoey discovers the threatening messages sent to Maeve and is disturbed by how vicious they are. Meanwhile, Anna comforts Frieda, who knew Buck from a writing class. Frieda is convinced he would never have taken his own life and points Anna towards Buck’s sister, Danielle.
Danielle is questioned the following morning while enjoying some time at a spa, because apparently nobody gets to finish a relaxing treatment when Anna Pigeon has questions. Anna discovers that Danielle has indeed sent threatening messages to Maeve. Danielle, however, points the finger towards Lew.
Anna returns to Maeve and asks about her relationship with Lew. Maeve defends him, insisting that their age difference does not change the fact that he loves her. She also tells Anna that love sometimes requires taking a chance on another person. Given Maeve’s experience as a young widow, the advice hits closer to home than Anna probably wants.
Meanwhile, Zoey and Jesse return to the river to collect water samples. Jesse sends them to a friend who can test them quickly, while Zoey encourages him to give Anna some space. Jesse, naturally, seems more interested in finding answers than waiting patiently for Anna to sort through her emotions.
Anna then discovers that Lew has found Buck’s manuscript. Worse, he has been hiding a major part of his own life from Maeve: he has a wife and child outside their relationship. At first, it seems obvious that Lew stole the manuscript to conceal his secret.
But the manuscript reveals something far more significant.
The notes show that Maeve was not actually Buck’s biological mother. Her entire public story about their relationship has been built around a lie. Anna confronts Maeve, who eventually admits that she killed Buck because she wanted to protect the legacy she had created around him and her photography.
The confession takes an even darker turn. Maeve has been drinking wine throughout the conversation, but Anna eventually realises that she is also consuming hemlock. By the time Anna understands what is happening, it is too late. She tries to save Maeve, but Maeve dies in Anna’s arms, taking the truth about her carefully constructed legacy with her.
The episode then shifts back to the park, where Christina gives Geoff Manny’s letter. It is a resignation letter, and the news catches them both off guard. Christina tries to convince him to stay, but Manny appears determined to leave the past behind.
Jesse’s investigation into the poisoned river also takes an unexpected turn. His contact who can test the samples turns out to be his ex-girlfriend. She confirms that the water contains high levels of sulphuric acid and suggests returning to the river to identify the source of the contamination. She also offers Jesse a job in Arizona, giving him another reason to consider leaving.
Frieda, meanwhile, finally decides to stop overthinking things. She asks Christina out on a date and begins writing music, something she has wanted to do for years. Her storyline provides one of the episode’s quieter developments, but it works because Frieda is finally choosing to do something rather than endlessly worrying about what might happen.
Anna also stops avoiding the inevitable and tells Jesse that she slept with Stanton. Jesse says he is not threatened by Stanton and makes it clear that he still wants to be with her. Anna then reveals the deeper reason she has been holding him at arm’s length: she was passed out drunk when Zach died, and she still blames herself for what happened.
Their conversation eventually turns towards Jesse’s potential move to Arizona. Rather than asking him to stay, Anna encourages him to take the job if it is what he wants. It is a surprisingly honest moment between them, even if it does not exactly scream romantic happily-ever-after.
Then the episode pulls the rug out again.
Jesse returns to the river alone to collect more samples. While investigating the contamination, he is suddenly shot. He collapses, bleeding, and falls into the water as the current carries him away.
That final scene leaves Anna Pigeon Season 1 Episode 9 on a particularly nasty cliffhanger. Jesse has been investigating the river contamination separately from Buck’s murder, but the timing strongly suggests the two mysteries may not be as unrelated as they first appeared. Someone clearly does not want him getting closer to the truth, and the episode deliberately stops before revealing who pulled the trigger.
As a review, this episode works because it gives the murder mystery several layers without completely abandoning Anna’s personal storyline. Maeve’s confession is the strongest part of the episode, largely because the revelation changes how her relationship with Buck is understood rather than simply identifying another conventional killer. Her decision to protect a story she built around herself also fits neatly with the episode’s wider theme of people being trapped by the versions of themselves they have created.
The weaker side is the sheer amount of emotional traffic happening around Anna. Stanton, Jesse, Zach, Arizona, Maeve, Lew, Buck and the river contamination all compete for attention, and occasionally the episode feels like it has three detectives working three different shows at once. Still, the pieces eventually begin connecting. Frieda taking a chance on Christina provides a nice counterpoint to Anna’s hesitation, while Jesse’s decision to investigate the river puts him directly in danger.
The Jesse cliffhanger is easily the hookiest part of the episode, though. After spending much of the story investigating the contaminated water, he is suddenly attacked and left drifting downstream. That is a very efficient way to make viewers immediately wonder who wanted him silenced and whether the river mystery connects to the earlier death.
