| Which AHS Seasons Should You Watch Before Season 13? Here’s What Connects. |
American Horror Story season 13 is not asking viewers to remember every haunted house, murderous cult leader and supernatural family tree from the past 15 years. Thankfully, Murder House, Coven and Hotel are among the most useful seasons to revisit, while Apocalypse and Cult add important context to the new story.
The first three episodes already make it clear that AHS 13 is playing heavily with the show's history, bringing back familiar characters rather than simply borrowing the usual Ryan Murphy horror ingredients and calling it a day.
The biggest reason to start with Murder House is Jessica Lange. Her return to American Horror Story is significant on its own, but season 13 goes further by bringing back her previous characters, including Constance Langdon, Sister Jude, Fiona Goode and Elsa Mars. So far, Constance is the character taking centre stage, immediately putting Murder House near the top of the homework list. And yes, AHS homework is apparently a thing now.
Lange originally appeared in the show's first four seasons, making her one of its defining early performers. She later returned briefly as Constance in Apocalypse, but AHS 13 gives the character considerably more importance. That makes Murder House essential viewing rather than merely a nice nostalgic extra for longtime viewers.
Sarah Paulson's return creates another major connection. Across the series, Paulson has played a remarkably large collection of characters, and season 13 is bringing several of them back. One confirmed return is Cordelia Goode from Coven, a role she also reprised in Apocalypse. She is also returning as Wilhemina Venable from Apocalypse, while the continuing links to Murder House leave room for her other familiar roles to become relevant.
That makes Coven another key season to watch before AHS 13. The connection is strengthened by the return of Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman in roles connected to the third season. Several of those characters also appeared in Apocalypse, turning the eighth season into something of a crossroads between different corners of the AHS universe.
Then there is Apocalypse, which may be the most useful refresher after Murder House and Coven. The season already brought several earlier characters back together, and many of those characters now have connections to AHS 13. Watching Apocalypse therefore helps explain why certain returning faces matter rather than leaving viewers wondering whether they have accidentally wandered into the wrong season halfway through.
Murphy has also pointed towards Hotel as one of the seasons that helped establish the tone for AHS 13. That puts the fifth season, led in part by Lady Gaga's memorable appearance, firmly on the extended watchlist. Hotel is not necessarily as essential as Murder House or Coven based on the connections established so far, but it appears to provide useful background for the atmosphere and references season 13 is building.
Cult is another season worth remembering, particularly because Evan Peters is returning as Kai Anderson. Peters has played a remarkable number of AHS characters over the years, and season 13 brings back five of them.
Two have already appeared in the opening episodes, with Tate Langdon from Murder House and Kai Anderson from Cult among the confirmed returns. Billie Lourd also returns as Winter, Kai's sister, giving Cult an even clearer place in the season's expanding web of callbacks.
For viewers trying to avoid a twelve-season marathon before starting AHS 13, the practical route is fairly straightforward. Murder House and Coven should be the priority, followed by Apocalypse if there is enough time for another deep dive. Hotel and Cult are useful additions, particularly for viewers who want to catch more of the character references and Easter eggs. In other words, you do not need to spend the next several weeks barricaded inside your house with twelve seasons playing on repeat.
There is, however, one important catch. Murphy has indicated that all 12 previous American Horror Story seasons are referenced in AHS 13, although not necessarily with equal importance.
That means the casual viewer can probably get by with the key seasons, while devoted AHS followers have a very good excuse to revisit the entire franchise and call it research. The show's long-running anthology format has finally produced the most terrifying assignment of all: remembering who played whom.
My take is that AHS 13 works best as a celebration of the show's strange, increasingly tangled history rather than simply another standalone horror story. Bringing back Constance, Cordelia, Tate and Kai gives the season a deliberately familiar feel, but it also risks making viewers spend more time identifying returning characters than paying attention to what is happening in front of them. Still, that is part of the fun.
Murder House and Coven feel like the most important foundations, while Apocalypse acts as the bridge that helps connect several older characters. Hotel and Cult add extra layers for viewers willing to dig deeper.
