Zach is barely part of the picture in Season 3 of My Life With the Walter Boys, but his absence actually makes sense after the chaos he caused between Nate Walter and Skylar. Played by Carson MacCormac, Zach arrived in Season 2 looking like Nate’s exciting new love interest, only for the show to reveal that Nate was never really the person he wanted in the first place. His actual target was Skylar, his former boyfriend, and Nate was essentially the unfortunate middleman in a very elaborate attempt to get an ex back.
That revelation changed everything for Nate and Skylar. It also meant that once Zach's plan fell apart, there was not much reason for him to remain at the centre of the story. By Season 3, the character has effectively disappeared from the main action, leaving viewers wondering whether Carson MacCormac actually left the series or whether Zach is simply somewhere in Silver Falls, wisely staying away from the mess he helped create.
Zach became the reason Nate and Skylar broke up
When Zach first appeared in Season 2, his connection with Nate seemed fairly straightforward. Nate was already dating Skylar, and their relationship had been warm and affectionate, but Nate had started to feel that something was missing.
After spending so much time together, the relationship had become predictable, and Nate began questioning whether the excitement he once felt was still there. Then Zach arrived at exactly the right moment.
Zach joined the school's club as a photographer and began working with Nate, who contributed music to the group's projects. Their creative partnership quickly became something more.
Zach was far more direct with Nate than Skylar had been, giving him the attention and excitement he had started to crave. Nate was clearly drawn towards him, even though Zach knew perfectly well that he already had a boyfriend.
Instead of quietly backing away, Zach pursued Nate with remarkable confidence. He made his interest obvious, including in public, and Nate gradually became caught between the comfort of his existing relationship and the thrill of someone new.
It was hardly a recipe for emotional peace, although My Life With the Walter Boys has never exactly treated peace as a priority.
Nate and Zach's relationship destroys what he had with Skylar. Skylar was not completely oblivious to what was happening. He noticed the growing closeness between Nate and Zach and attempted to repair some of the distance that had developed between him and Nate. He tried to spend more time together and remind Nate of what they had built, but by then the situation had already become far more complicated.
Skylar also tried warning Nate about Zach's intentions. Unfortunately, that warning had almost the opposite effect. Rather than making Nate reconsider the new relationship, it pushed him further towards Zach.
Nate was already fascinated by the attention he was receiving, and the feeling that Skylar was trying to control who he spent time with only made him more determined to follow his new attraction.
Eventually, Nate and Zach kiss at the school dance. For Skylar, that is the point of no return. He has tried to hold their relationship together, but watching Nate cross that line makes the decision painfully simple. Skylar ends their relationship, choosing to walk away rather than continue competing for someone who has already started looking elsewhere.
Nate is obviously upset about hurting Skylar, but there is another emotion underneath it. He is also excited about the possibility of starting something new with Zach. And then the show pulls the rug out from underneath him.
Zach was never really interested in Nate. The major twist is that Zach's feelings for Nate were never what they appeared to be. His real interest had always been Skylar.
The two had secretly dated during their sophomore year, but their relationship ended after Zach refused to come out. Skylar eventually decided that he could not remain stuck waiting for Zach to be ready, so he ended the relationship and moved on.
By the time Zach returned to the story, he had changed. He was now open about himself and wanted another chance with Skylar. The problem was that Skylar had already moved on and was happily involved with Nate.
So Zach came up with a particularly complicated solution. Rather than trying to win Skylar back directly, he pursued Nate.
By becoming the person Nate thought he wanted, Zach could create enough distance between Nate and Skylar to break them apart. Once that happened, Zach could presumably step back into Skylar's life.
It was an impressive amount of effort to put into a plan that could have been solved by simply having an honest conversation, but honesty would hardly have produced nearly as much television.
Skylar refuses to take Zach back
Zach's plan technically works because Nate and Skylar break up. The problem is that Skylar has absolutely no interest in rewarding Zach for making it happen.
When Zach finally reveals that he wants Skylar back, Skylar makes his position clear. There is no reunion waiting for them. Whatever feelings may once have existed between them have been overwhelmed by the betrayal and manipulation surrounding Nate.
Instead of seeing Zach's return as romantic, Skylar sees it for what it is: an attempt to interfere with his life because Zach wanted something he had already lost.
That rejection leaves Zach with very little. He has broken apart Nate and Skylar's relationship, only to discover that the person he was trying to get back does not want him. Nate, meanwhile, is left dealing with the fact that his exciting new relationship was built on a lie.
What happens to Nate after Zach is exposed?
Nate is devastated when he learns the truth. He realises that he was not simply caught up in a complicated love triangle. He had been used as part of Zach's plan to reach Skylar.
That discovery also forces Nate to confront his own choices. Zach may have manipulated the situation, but Nate still made the decision to kiss him and endanger his relationship with Skylar. He cannot simply blame everything on Zach and pretend he had no role in what happened.
Nate apologises to Skylar, but Skylar is not ready to forget everything immediately. From his perspective, Nate moved towards Zach remarkably quickly once the relationship became less exciting. The apology matters, but it does not magically erase the hurt.
By Season 3, that damage is still visible. Nate and Skylar are not behaving like two people who have neatly moved past their breakup. Their conversations are limited, their interactions can feel awkward and there is still an obvious emotional distance between them.
Yet there is also evidence that the relationship has not completely stopped mattering to either of them.
Skylar still cares about Nate
One of the clearest signs comes when Nate suffers a mini stroke. Skylar immediately informs Katherine, showing that whatever happened between them, he still cares about Nate's wellbeing.
That detail is important because Season 3 does not simply present Skylar as someone who has forgotten Nate. He is trying to move forward while still having feelings that are much harder to switch off than a relationship status might suggest.
It also makes the Zach storyline feel more significant in retrospect. Zach did not merely create a temporary romantic complication. His actions contributed to the breakdown of a relationship between two people who still clearly have some concern for each other.
So, where is Zach in Season 3?
This is where things become much simpler.
Zach is essentially out of the story. After Skylar rejects him and his relationship with Nate falls apart, Zach no longer has a reason to remain involved with the school club. Skylar later mentions that the club needs a new camera because Zach is gone, confirming that he has left that part of the school environment.
However, that does not necessarily mean Zach has left Silver Falls altogether.
The series does not give him a dramatic farewell or suggest that he packed his bags and disappeared from town overnight. Instead, his role simply winds down. He has caused the damage he came to cause, his plan failed, and the main story has moved on to other characters and relationships.
So if you're wondering whether Carson MacCormac left My Life With the Walter Boys, the safest answer is that Zach is no longer an active part of the Season 3 storyline, but the show has not necessarily established that he has permanently left Silver Falls.
Did Carson MacCormac leave the show?
There is a difference between a character disappearing from the main storyline and an actor being formally written out forever. In Zach's case, Season 3 gives the character very little to do because his central storyline with Nate and Skylar has already reached its natural conclusion.
The character's absence therefore feels more like the end of his current arc than a major behind-the-scenes departure that the show needs to explain. It is not presented as some enormous dramatic exit. In true Silver Falls fashion, the character is simply no longer around when the next round of romantic complications begins.
Fans have understandably had mixed reactions to Zach's storyline and his eventual absence. Some viewers are relieved that the triangle has been put to rest, particularly after watching Nate and Skylar's relationship collapse because of Zach's plan. From that perspective, his disappearance allows the story to concentrate on the Walter family and the relationships that have always been at the heart of the series.
Others feel that Zach was an entertaining troublemaker precisely because he could walk into a relatively settled situation and completely rearrange it. His manipulation of Nate and Skylar created one of Season 2's biggest twists, and removing him means losing a character who was very good at making everyone else's life considerably more complicated.
There is also a group of viewers who would like to see him return simply because his story remains unfinished in one respect. We know why he wanted Skylar, why he targeted Nate and why Skylar rejected him, but we do not really see what happens to Zach after all of that. That leaves enough room for the writers to bring him back if they ever decide that Silver Falls needs another dose of trouble.
Could Zach return in a future season?
There is certainly a possibility. Nothing in the storyline suggests that Zach's absence must be permanent, and his departure from the school club leaves the door open for a future appearance if the writers want to revisit him.
If he does return, however, it would be more interesting if the character had changed rather than simply repeating the same plan. Bringing him back solely to interfere with Nate and Skylar again could feel like going around the same track twice. A more interesting return would explore what Zach learned from losing Skylar and being rejected after manipulating Nate.
Of course, with Jackie, Cole, Alex, Nate, Skylar and the rest of the Walter family already providing enough relationship chaos to fill several calendars, Zach may have to wait his turn.
Zach's disappearance from My Life With the Walter Boys is less mysterious than it first appears. He entered the story with a very specific goal: break apart Nate and Skylar so he could try to reclaim his former relationship with Skylar.
He succeeded at the first part and completely failed at the second. Once Skylar rejected him and Nate discovered that he had been used, Zach's role in the story was effectively finished.
That does not necessarily mean Carson MacCormac's Zach can never return. Silver Falls has a habit of turning old relationships into new problems, and Zach certainly left enough unfinished emotional business behind to make a comeback possible. For now, though, he is somewhere outside the main Walter family orbit, while Nate and Skylar are left dealing with the consequences of what happened.
And honestly, after everything Zach put them through, perhaps a little time off-screen is exactly what everyone needs. But would you actually want Zach back in Season 4, or has Silver Falls finally had enough of his camera, his schemes and his very complicated love life?
