The Road to Splendor Season 2: Will the Chinese Drama Return for Another Chapter?

The Road to Splendor is still unfolding on Tencent Video, but the drama has already sparked plenty of discussion about whether its story could continue beyond its current run. With Ding Yuxi and Ancy Deng Enxi leading the historical romance as Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun, viewers are becoming increasingly invested in the pair's journey, while the latest developments have left enough room for fans to wonder whether this could eventually become more than a one-season story. There is no official Season 2 renewal at present, but the conversation is already well underway.

That said, there is a fairly large difference between viewers wanting another season and a Chinese historical drama actually getting one. The Road to Splendor is an ongoing Tencent Video production, and dramas of this scale are usually planned around a substantial central story rather than an endless succession of seasons. So while the door is not completely shut, fans should probably resist preparing the celebratory banners just yet.

What is The Road to Splendor about?

The Road to Splendor, also known as Hua Kai Jin Xiu (花开锦绣), follows Fu Tingyun, a noblewoman whose life collapses after she becomes caught in a carefully constructed family conspiracy. Falsely accused and pushed out of the world she once knew, she is forced to rely on her own intelligence rather than the social status that previously protected her.

Her path eventually crosses with Zhao Ling, a resourceful merchant whose background could hardly be further removed from hers. He is street-smart, ambitious and considerably more comfortable navigating the commercial underworld than the refined world of aristocratic families. Neither has much reason to trust the other at first, but survival has a funny way of encouraging people to reconsider their priorities.

Their partnership gradually becomes the centre of the story. What begins as a practical arrangement develops into a powerful alliance as they investigate corruption, illegal trade networks, family conspiracies and political schemes.

At the same time, Fu Tingyun begins transforming from a sheltered noblewoman into someone capable of controlling her own fate, while Zhao Ling uses his commercial instincts and tactical ability to climb into increasingly influential circles.

The romance is therefore only one part of the appeal. The bigger story is about two people from very different worlds learning how to survive together and eventually becoming a formidable force against the people who tried to destroy them.

The latest episodes are already fuelling Season 2 talk

As the current story continues to develop, viewers have begun looking beyond the immediate plot and asking what might come afterwards.

Some of the reactions suggest that fans feel the world of The Road to Splendor has enough political intrigue, family conflict and character development to support another chapter if the production team decides to continue it.

The response is far from unanimous, though. Some viewers are already asking for more because they are invested in Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun and want to see what happens once the pair move beyond their current struggles. Others feel that the drama has enough material to tell its story properly without needing to stretch the narrative simply because audiences are reluctant to say goodbye.

That split is fairly understandable. Once viewers become attached to a historical drama's characters, the idea of ending their journey can feel unnecessarily cruel. At the same time, nobody wants a second season that exists solely because everyone collectively refused to leave the palace.

Has The Road to Splendor been renewed for Season 2?

No, The Road to Splendor has not been officially renewed for Season 2 at the time of writing. There is no confirmed second-season announcement, release schedule or returning cast list.

That does not mean a sequel is impossible. It simply means there is currently no official decision for viewers to point to. The drama is still ongoing on Tencent Video, so conversations about what happens after the current story are naturally premature to some extent.

The drama's popularity will inevitably be one factor if the production team considers continuing it. However, ratings alone do not guarantee another season, particularly for a large-scale Chinese historical production that requires extensive costumes, sets, locations, production planning and a substantial cast.

There is also the question of the source material. The Road to Splendor is adapted from the web novel Hua Kai Jin Xiu by Zhi Zhi, and the first season is structured around that established story. If the adaptation reaches the end of its source material, continuing would require the creative team to develop a new storyline rather than simply adapting the next section of the same novel.

Why Season 2 is possible but far from certain

There are two arguments pulling in opposite directions here. On one side, the drama has a central pairing that gives a potential second season an obvious foundation. Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun have enough unresolved personal and political possibilities to carry another story if the writers find the right direction.

On the other hand, Chinese historical dramas are often designed as complete stories rather than shows that automatically return year after year. A second season would need to justify its existence creatively as well as commercially. The production team would need a storyline that feels like a genuine continuation rather than an excuse to keep two popular characters on screen.

That is why the current possibility remains uncertain. Fan enthusiasm can certainly help create momentum, but enthusiasm alone cannot solve the practical problems involved in bringing a large historical production back together.

If The Road to Splendor does receive another season, the story would probably need to move into a very different phase of Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun's lives.

The first season is heavily concerned with survival, betrayal, exile, family conspiracies and the struggle to establish themselves. A follow-up would have to ask what happens after two people who spent so long fighting to survive finally acquire influence.

For Zhao Ling, that could mean dealing with the consequences of his rise from a merchant operating outside the traditional power structure to a man with genuine political and military influence.

His greatest challenge would no longer simply be surviving hostile opponents. He would have to learn how to operate inside the system he once stood outside, where enemies can smile at dinner before trying to undermine him the following morning.

His humble background would also remain an obvious weakness in the eyes of established elites. A second season could explore aristocratic factions questioning his legitimacy, military rivals attempting to block his advancement and officials who cannot quite accept that someone from a commercial background has managed to gain serious influence. Zhao Ling might have won some battles, but apparently the imperial court has not run out of people who enjoy making his life unnecessarily complicated.

Fu Tingyun's Season 2 story could be even more interesting

For Fu Tingyun, a second season would offer the chance to explore what happens when a woman who has spent much of the first story fighting simply to survive finally gains security and influence.

She would no longer be the same person viewers met at the beginning. Her experience would have taught her how quickly privilege can disappear and how dangerous it is to depend on family status alone.

With her reputation restored, she could become a major force within the household and the wider political world, using the strategic skills she developed during her exile to protect the people around her.

That could create a fascinating contrast with Zhao Ling. Instead of constantly fighting alongside each other against an immediate threat, they could find themselves dealing with different responsibilities and competing political pressures. Their relationship would have to survive not only external enemies but the uncomfortable reality that both are becoming powerful in their own right.

A new political enemy would almost certainly be needed

A second season would also need a new antagonist. Once the existing family conflicts are resolved, simply introducing another version of the same conspiracy would risk making the story feel repetitive.

A more interesting direction would be a powerful court faction attempting to control trade routes or the salt industry, forcing Zhao Ling into a direct confrontation with people who possess considerably more institutional power than the enemies he faced earlier.

Alternatively, the story could expand beyond domestic politics and introduce tensions along the empire's borders, giving Zhao Ling military responsibilities while Fu Tingyun remains at the centre of the political manoeuvring in the capital.

That setup would allow the drama to widen its world without abandoning the elements that made the first season compelling.

Their marriage could become the real battlefield

Perhaps the most natural Season 2 storyline would be the relationship between Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun itself. Their first chapter is largely about becoming allies and learning to trust one another while surrounded by people trying to bring them down. A second season could examine whether that partnership remains equally strong once they have more power, responsibility and enemies.

Political marriages, court expectations, family alliances and conflicting duties could put pressure on them without turning the relationship into a simple misunderstanding machine. The more interesting conflict would come from the fact that both characters are ambitious and capable. They would not need to stop loving one another for their priorities to clash.

That could give Season 2 a more mature romantic storyline, with the couple learning how to operate not just as survivors but as people who now have something significant to lose.

Fan reactions to the possibility of another season vary. Some viewers clearly want more of Fu Tingyun and Zhao Ling, particularly because the pairing has become one of the biggest reasons to keep following the drama. For those viewers, another season would be an opportunity to explore the couple after their biggest battles rather than ending the story just as their new lives begin.

Others are more cautious. There is a school of thought that believes The Road to Splendor should tell its story properly and then leave before the material becomes repetitive. For these viewers, a carefully concluded single season would be preferable to a sequel that weakens the impact of everything that came before.

That difference in opinion is actually a healthy sign for the drama. Nobody seems entirely indifferent. The debate is less about whether people care and more about whether there is enough meaningful story left to justify returning.

The honest answer is: not much. There is no confirmed The Road to Splendor Season 2 storyline, release date or returning cast because the drama has not been renewed.

There has been speculation about the possibility of continuing the story, particularly because of the audience response and the amount of interest surrounding the characters. However, alleged comments attributed to production personnel or discussions circulating on social media should not be treated as official confirmation.

If the production team eventually decides to continue, the earliest stages would likely involve determining whether the original creative team and principal cast can return, followed by developing a new story that works beyond the existing source material. That is a much bigger decision than simply announcing another batch of episodes.

Could Ding Yuxi and Ancy Deng Enxi return?

If The Road to Splendor Season 2 happens, Ding Yuxi and Ancy Deng Enxi would be the obvious names viewers would expect to return as Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun. Their relationship is the heart of the drama, so replacing either lead would dramatically change the appeal of a sequel.

However, there is no confirmed Season 2 cast at present. The supporting cast would depend heavily on how the writers continue the story. Characters whose arcs reach a definitive conclusion may not return, while a new political storyline could require an entirely different group of officials, nobles, merchants and rivals.

When could The Road to Splendor Season 2 be released?

There is no release date because there is no confirmed second season. If the drama were renewed, viewers should not expect it to arrive immediately.

A large historical production requires considerable preparation, from scripts and casting to costume design, sets, locations and filming.

A hypothetical The Road to Splendor Season 2 would therefore likely need a substantial production window before it could reach Tencent Video. A late 2027 or 2028 arrival would be more realistic than expecting a quick turnaround, although that is only a projection and not an announced schedule.

Could Season 2 be completely original?

Yes. If the first season exhausts the available material from Hua Kai Jin Xiu, a follow-up would need to expand beyond the original adapted storyline. That could actually give the writers considerable freedom.

Instead of trying to recreate the first season, they could build an original continuation around Zhao Ling's new responsibilities, Fu Tingyun's growing influence and the political consequences of everything they have achieved.

The challenge would be maintaining the tone and character development that made the original story work rather than turning the sequel into an unrelated political drama wearing the same costumes.

Why The Road to Splendor may remain a one-season drama

Despite the current enthusiasm, there are good reasons to expect the drama could remain a single-season story. The production is already built around a defined historical narrative, and the first season has enough room to develop its major conflicts without automatically requiring another chapter.

There is also the simple reality of cast availability. Ding Yuxi, Ancy Deng Enxi and the rest of the ensemble are likely to have other projects waiting once production wraps. Coordinating a large returning cast is never as easy as fans understandably imagine it to be. Everyone can say they would love to return, but calendars have a rather annoying habit of disagreeing.

That is why a Season 2 decision would ultimately depend on much more than popularity. The production team would need the right story, the right timing, the necessary cast availability and a reason to believe the continuation would be worth making.

For now, The Road to Splendor Season 2 remains unconfirmed. The drama is still ongoing on Tencent Video, and there is no official announcement that the historical romance will continue beyond its current story.

Still, the sequel conversation makes sense. The combination of Fu Tingyun and Zhao Ling, the political world surrounding them and the potential consequences of their rise creates plenty of material that could support another chapter. A second season could explore power rather than survival, marriage rather than courtship and political responsibility rather than simply escaping danger.

Whether that becomes reality will depend on the production team and the response to the current run. For the moment, fans have every reason to keep watching rather than assuming the story is already finished. Would you want to see Ding Yuxi and Ancy Deng Enxi return as Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun for another round of court politics, romance and beautifully dressed chaos, or would you rather see The Road to Splendor end on its own terms?
