The film follows Amziah King, a beekeeper, musician and unofficial community figure whose quiet life becomes complicated when Kateri returns after leaving foster care following her mother’s death. Amziah attempts to reconnect with her and introduce her to his honey business, but tensions surrounding his livelihood gradually push Kateri into a much bigger role. It is a story built around family, music, rural life and beekeeping, which meant the production needed locations that could feel lived-in rather than suspiciously polished for the camera.
That is where Alabama proved particularly useful. A substantial portion of the filming took place around Greater Birmingham, with Birmingham itself among the key production areas.
Exterior scenes were shot along Birmingport Road and Mulga Loop Road, while nearby communities helped expand the fictional Oklahoma setting without making everything look like the same patch of countryside wearing a different hat.
Bessemer also became part of the production, with J & J Grocery & Deli on Dickey Springs Road reportedly transformed into the fictional Dead Dino. The use of an existing local business helped give the film the sort of everyday setting that would be difficult to recreate convincingly on a soundstage. For a story so dependent on its small-town atmosphere, that ordinary quality matters almost as much as the bigger landscapes.

Production also moved towards Pell City, where the Pell City Steak House Restaurant on Comer Avenue was used as a filming location. The nearby Cropwell community also appears among the Alabama areas used for scenes. These locations helped broaden the visual world of the film, giving Patterson different combinations of roads, businesses and rural surroundings while keeping the production rooted in the same general region.
Another notable location was The Frosty Mug in Jasper, where the filmmakers recorded interior sequences. Restaurants and local businesses can sometimes disappear completely once a production dresses them for the screen, and that seems to have been part of the approach here. Rather than constructing every corner of Amziah’s world from scratch, the production made use of places that already carried the atmosphere the story required.
The filming process itself was hardly a perfectly controlled studio exercise. Director Andrew Patterson described working outdoors around bees while dealing with lightning and unpredictable weather, all of which made scheduling considerably more complicated. The conditions apparently became part of the filmmaking experience, with the cast and crew having to adjust when nature decided it had its own production notes.
That became particularly memorable for Matthew McConaughey, who was working closely with the bees required for the film. Adam Hickman, founder of Foxhound Bee Company and a beekeeping adviser who also worked as the production’s lead bee wrangler, recalled that McConaughey was stung during training.
A bee reportedly went straight for the actor’s forehead after the group had moved away from the hives, proving that even after decades in front of cameras, there are some co-stars you simply cannot reason with.
McConaughey’s work with the film’s musicians and performers also helped shape some of its more organic scenes. Patterson explained that one sequence involving musicians gathering at Amziah’s home developed its own rhythm during filming, while McConaughey noted how the scene grew beyond what had initially been planned.

That combination of preparation and spontaneity appears to have been important to a production that was constantly dealing with weather, animals and outdoor locations.
Principal photography began in June 2023 and wrapped in early August 2023, making for roughly two months of filming. Casting company Goleman Casting later highlighted the scale of the local involvement, noting that hundreds of people came to set during the production.
For a film built around a close-knit rural community, having that many local contributors involved also helped the world on screen feel less like a collection of hired extras and more like an actual place.
There is, however, a notable inconsistency in the location information provided for The Rivals of Amziah King. Some material lists locations in Los Angeles County, including Burbank, Huntington Park, Alhambra and Downtown Fullerton, and even describes studio work in California.
That conflicts directly with the claim that the film was shot entirely in Alabama. The Alabama production details are also far more closely connected to the reported filming process, including the documented work around Birmingham, Pell City, Jasper, Columbiana and Guntersville. For that reason, the California locations should not be presented as confirmed shooting locations alongside the Alabama production without further verification.
Columbiana, the Shelby County seat, was another Alabama location used during filming, adding another small-town setting to the production's visual palette. The filmmakers also worked in Guntersville, the county seat of Marshall County, further extending the shoot beyond the Birmingham area.
Together, these locations helped create the broad rural environment needed for Amziah’s world while allowing the production to move between communities rather than relying on a single location.
For fans, the Alabama filming locations add another layer to a film whose setting is almost as important as its characters.
