Spooky In Love Episode 9 pushes Cheon Yeo-ri and Ma Gang-wook into a very different stage of their relationship, while the battle for Reina Hotel becomes increasingly personal. After pretending to be together, the pair finally acknowledge that their feelings are real, giving viewers plenty of romantic moments before the drama swiftly remembers that happiness is apparently not allowed to last for more than five minutes.
The latest episode of the Korean drama Spooky In Love (오싹한 연애) balances its romance with corporate manoeuvring, family tensions and another supernatural case. Cheon Yeo-ri, the wealthy heiress and CEO of Reina Hotel who has been able to see spirits since a mysterious incident 12 years ago, is now openly standing beside prosecutor Ma Gang-wook. But while their relationship becomes more convincing, the threats surrounding Yeo-ri grow considerably more complicated.
The episode begins with Yeo-ri and Gang-wook enjoying the aftermath of their confession and kiss. Their fake relationship has effectively crossed into something genuine, and the two finally get to experience the simple happiness they had been avoiding.
During a walk, Yeo-ri admits that merely holding hands with someone she truly likes is something she has always wanted. She remains shy about taking things further, deciding that some moments can wait, but there is no mistaking where their relationship now stands.
Gang-wook, meanwhile, appears to have embraced his new role with almost alarming enthusiasm. He waits around Yeo-ri's workplace and keeps close enough to protect her from both ordinary trouble and the spirits that continue to surround her.
The hotel staff jokingly nickname him “Keyring Man”, because he seems determined to remain attached to Yeo-ri wherever she goes. It is affectionate, slightly ridiculous and completely in character for a prosecutor who apparently has decided that personal space is now optional.
The romantic development becomes even more entertaining when the pair realise that nobody around them completely believes their relationship is genuine. Gang-wook suggests they gather more evidence to make their romance convincing, which leads to a series of dates and shared activities.
They visit an arcade, take photographs and videos together, run along the Han River, eat Gang-wook’s favourite ramen and try each other’s hobbies, including rock climbing.
These scenes give the drama room to slow down after the heavier family conflict. They also show why Yeo-ri and Gang-wook work as a pair. She is accustomed to carrying the burden of her family, her company and her supernatural ability alone, while Gang-wook brings a stubborn sense of justice and a willingness to stand beside her without treating her as someone who needs to be rescued from every problem.
That does not mean the family drama has disappeared. Far from it. Ok Gye-hui and Cheon Ha-ri begin preparing an aggressive move against Yeo-ri by organising an emergency extraordinary shareholders meeting. Their objective is clear: remove Yeo-ri from her position as CEO of Reina Hotel.
Yeo-ri realises that she cannot simply ignore the threat. With help from Manager Bong and her trusted team, she begins looking for a way to secure enough shareholder support to protect her position.
A mysterious international shareholder named Sein, who controls crucial votes, becomes particularly important to the situation, forcing Yeo-ri to consider a trip outside South Korea to secure his support.
At the same time, the corporate investigation begins uncovering some deeply questionable activity involving Reina's art holdings. Yeo-ri learns that around 40 per cent of the paintings purchased from Cheon Gallery were acquired at prices higher than what the artists themselves were selling them for.
She also discovers that the former head of Reina's art team is now working at Cheon Gallery, making the connection even more suspicious. Things become more complicated when Yeo-ri discovers that her cousin Dong-jun borrowed 50 billion won for personal reasons while putting several paintings owned by Reina Group forward as security.
Rather than immediately exposing everything, Yeo-ri decides to keep the information quiet while she investigates what is really happening. Meanwhile, Gye-hee continues working behind the scenes.
She meets Reina shareholder Director Gong and raises concerns about Yeo-ri's relationship with Gang-wook, while also pointing to rumours surrounding Yeo-ri's ability to see spirits as something that could damage the company's image. It is a remarkably convenient argument for someone already looking for a reason to remove her, and Yeo-ri knows exactly what is happening.
Chairwoman Baek remains caught between the competing sides of the family. She warns Yeo-ri that Gye-hui and her children are determined to damage her reputation before the shareholders' meeting. She also takes a closer look at Gang-wook, asking about his feelings for Yeo-ri and later investigating his past, including his heart surgery.
Gang-wook does not hesitate when asked whether his feelings for Yeo-ri are genuine. He tells Chairwoman Baek that he loves her and promises to stand by her.
Yeo-ri, for her part, tells her grandmother that she intends to bring Gye-hui down and asks Gang-wook to help her. Their relationship may have started as an arrangement, but there is now very little pretending left to do.
Min-hwan remains one of the more complicated figures in the episode. He initially appears to be working against Yeo-ri, but the story reveals that his connection to her goes much deeper than expected.
A flashback shows that he once used his influence to help Yeo-ri's former boyfriend Gi-u obtain a major divorce case. In return, Min-hwan asked him to keep Yeo-ri's ability to see spirits secret.
That revelation changes the way Min-hwan's actions can be viewed. He has apparently known about Yeo-ri's secret for years and has taken steps to protect it. When Ha-ri confronts Gi-u, he refuses to reveal what he knows, while Min-hwan later admits that he genuinely cares about Yeo-ri and does not intend to expose her secret.
Yet the drama also plants a much darker question around Min-hwan's past. A flashback reveals that both Min-hwan and his brother Ji-hwan had intentions of proposing to Yeo-ri.
Min-hwan discovers that Ji-hwan is planning to make his move first but encourages him to go ahead. The scene leaves viewers wondering what really happened afterwards and whether Min-hwan's feelings for Yeo-ri could be connected to his brother's fate.
That uncertainty makes Min-hwan particularly interesting. He is not presented as a straightforward rival, and the episode deliberately keeps his motives murky. He can be protective one moment and deeply suspicious the next.
For viewers who have grown attached to him, that is rather inconvenient. The drama appears determined to make everyone complicated just when it would be much easier if somebody simply wore a villain's hat.
The supernatural storyline also moves forward through the discovery beneath the camellia tree at Yeeon Art Gallery. Representatives from the Korean Heritage Service excavate a casket and uncover the remains of Hwagyeongdang. Her spirit is finally reunited with Dowon, allowing Yeo-ri to witness their farewell.
The discovery is then recognised as an important piece of Korean heritage, and Director Lee Hwa-young decides that Hwagyeongdang should be buried alongside Prince Gangpyeong's remains.
However, Yeo-ri and Gang-wook reveal the truth behind the poem Hwagyeongdang wrote for Dowon, forcing Hwa-young to reconsider her idealised view of her ancestor.
Hwa-young struggles to accept that Prince Gangpyeong could have been responsible for wrongdoing. Yeo-ri does not force her to accept the truth, instead asking her to consider his actions for herself. Gang-wook similarly asks her to allow Hwagyeongdang's remains to be laid to rest properly. Yeo-ri then leaves the decision with Hwa-young.
The case affects Gang-wook more than he initially admits. He realises that these spirits rely on Yeo-ri as their only connection to the living world, meaning every unresolved story eventually lands on her shoulders.
He admires her determination to help them find justice and begins thinking more seriously about what happened to her 12 years ago. That mystery becomes increasingly important because Gang-wook appears determined to discover why Yeo-ri gained the ability to see spirits in the first place.
His interest is no longer simply professional. He wants to understand what happened to her and, if possible, find a way to change the circumstances that have controlled so much of her life.
There is also another supernatural case developing around Si-o, a designer whose work suddenly appears inconsistent with his usual style. Yeo-ri notices that the flower arrangements associated with his atelier do not match his previous designs. When she tries to contact him, she sees his spirit instead.
The flashback reveals the disturbing truth. Si-o confronted his twin brother after discovering that he had been using Si-o's identity to deceive people. The brother asks Si-o for one billion won, but Si-o refuses. Their confrontation ends with Si-o being killed accidentally, after which his twin takes his place at the atelier.
Yeo-ri goes searching for Si-o's body, but Ha-ri follows her, apparently hoping to finally catch her in a situation that exposes her secret. Yeo-ri attempts to call Gang-wook for help, leaving him a message asking him to send police backup to the location.
The episode then cuts to Gang-wook arriving as Yeo-ri tries to stay out of Ha-ri's sight. The timing is perfect, particularly because Ha-ri is becoming increasingly determined to uncover what Yeo-ri is hiding. The final moments leave the Si-o mystery hanging while also placing Yeo-ri's secret in greater danger than ever.
Episode 9 works best when it allows Yeo-ri and Gang-wook to simply exist together. Their relationship has finally moved beyond the awkward mechanics of pretending to be a couple, and the drama wisely does not rush straight into another huge declaration.
Instead, it gives them ordinary moments: walking together, eating ramen, playing games and discovering each other's hobbies. Those scenes may sound small, but they give the romance a believable warmth that the bigger supernatural plot sometimes lacks.
The episode also deserves credit for refusing to make its supporting characters completely predictable. Min-hwan is the obvious example. I went into his scenes expecting another obstacle for Yeo-ri and Gang-wook, only for the episode to reveal that he has quietly protected Yeo-ri's secret for years.
That does not automatically make him trustworthy, particularly after the revelations surrounding Ji-hwan, but it does make him far more interesting. His behaviour feels like a puzzle the drama is deliberately refusing to solve too early.
The same cannot quite be said for Ha-ri, who continues to behave as though leaving Yeo-ri alone would somehow cause the entire story to collapse. Her determination to expose Yeo-ri's secret adds pressure, although the character's persistence occasionally crosses into the sort of dramatic frustration where you want somebody to hand her a cup of tea and suggest taking the afternoon off.
Still, the episode's strongest material comes from the way romance, mystery and supernatural storytelling overlap. Gang-wook is not simply falling for Yeo-ri; he is becoming invested in understanding the burden she has carried for 12 years.
That gives their relationship an emotional purpose beyond the usual attraction storyline. His efforts to uncover the truth about her past also suggest that the drama's central mystery may eventually become inseparable from their future together.
The episode is not flawless. The corporate storyline throws a considerable amount of information at the audience, from suspicious artwork purchases to shareholder manoeuvring and family politics, and some of it competes for attention with the more engaging relationship and supernatural material. Yet the episode manages to keep enough momentum because each storyline creates a new reason to keep watching.
Overall, Spooky In Love Episode 9 is a strong transitional episode that turns the central romance from an amusing arrangement into something with real emotional weight while steadily tightening the mystery around Yeo-ri. The final Si-o development gives the next chapter an immediate hook, while Min-hwan's past adds another layer of uncertainty.
Most importantly, Gang-wook and Yeo-ri finally feel like a couple rather than two people trapped inside a relationship contract. Whether that happiness survives the next round of family schemes and ghostly complications is another matter entirely.
The varied fan reaction makes sense, too. Viewers rooting for Yeo-ri and Gang-wook will likely enjoy seeing them become more comfortable together, while others may be more interested in the unanswered questions surrounding Min-hwan, Ji-hwan, Yeo-ri's past and the Si-o mystery. With Ha-ri closing in and the fight for Reina Hotel escalating, Episode 9 leaves plenty of room for the drama to become even messier.
