That story began in 2001 after mutual friends encouraged Michael and Kit to meet at a nightclub in New York City. Kit, who had previously worked as a model before becoming a professional photographer, immediately caught Michael's attention.

While the early years of their relationship were filled with happiness, Michael deliberately avoided portraying their partnership as flawless. His memoir openly discusses how changes in intimacy affected their relationship after more than a decade together. Those struggles eventually led Michael to rely too heavily on alcohol, while both men also attended therapy and briefly lived apart during what he later described as a "soft breakup." It was not an easy chapter to write, but Michael believed honesty mattered far more than protecting the illusion of perfection.
Professionally, Michael's career continued to flourish. Personally, however, life changed dramatically in 2014 when Kit Cowan began experiencing unexplained health problems. Writing ultimately became part of that healing journey. Michael first shared memories of Kit through Facebook posts before friends encouraged him to expand them into a memoir.
He has since admitted that writing the book was emotionally exhausting because every chapter required him to revisit moments he had barely begun processing. Recording the audiobook proved equally challenging, forcing him to relive those memories once again, this time aloud.
Years later, participating in the production of Spoiler Alert offered a very different experience. Michael has described the film as a version of his life rather than a frame-by-frame recreation, recognising that some dramatic adjustments were necessary while appreciating how faithfully the emotional truth remained intact.
Time has softened the sharpest edges of grief, but he continues to speak about Kit with remarkable warmth, saying he remains open to finding love again even while believing no relationship could ever replace what they shared.
