Yomiuri Giants catcher Shinnosuke Yamase reportedly dating TV personality Chika Yamane in new FRIDAY scoop

Yomiuri Giants catcher Shinnosuke Yamase, 25, has reportedly begun a serious relationship with television personality Chika Yamane, 30, after the pair were spotted together in Tokyo in matching casual outfits. A report from FRIDAY describes the two spending time together in a relaxed mood before returning to the same luxury tower apartment, adding a surprising off-field storyline to a season in which Yamase is increasingly being discussed as a future regular behind the plate.

The reported relationship comes as Yamase continues to push for a more established role with the Giants. The Ishikawa native joined the club after being selected fifth overall in the 2019 NPB Draft, having previously formed a battery with pitcher Yasunobu Okugawa at Seiryo High School. Their team reached the runner-up spot at the Koshien tournament, while Yamase's throwing ability quickly became one of his most noticeable strengths.

His defensive reputation has remained a major part of his appeal within the Giants organisation. Former manager Shinnosuke Abe, himself a former catcher, is said to have taken a particular interest in Yamase during his time managing the farm team.

Opportunities at first-team level have gradually increased, and Yamase has also begun making progress with the bat, including recording his first professional home run this season. With the Giants looking towards the next generation behind the plate, his name has increasingly entered the conversation as a potential long-term catching option.

Away from the diamond, however, Yamase appears to have found a rather different kind of battery partner. Chika Yamane, five years his senior, is a Horipro-affiliated talent who has built a career across television and sports-related entertainment.

She became known for her enthusiasm for sumo, an interest shaped by her parents, and has appeared on programmes and contributed writing connected to the sport. She also holds nutrition-related qualifications, making her sporting interests considerably more serious than simply knowing when to shout at the television.

The FRIDAY report says the pair were seen together in Tokyo in late July, dressed in remarkably coordinated outfits. Yamane wore a black T-shirt with light-grey sweat trousers, while Yamase opted for a black T-shirt and light-grey shorts.

Both were also wearing sunglasses as they walked together around sunset, creating what was, whether intentional or not, an impressively coordinated couple's look.

According to a person described as an acquaintance of Yamase, the two are in a serious relationship and reportedly met at a gathering organised by friends earlier this year.

Their shared interest in baseball is said to have helped bring them closer, with Yamane's long-standing support for the Yomiuri Giants providing an obvious point of common ground. For a professional catcher accustomed to reading signals from a distance, finding someone who already supports his team is perhaps an unusually convenient starting position.

The report also describes the pair being seen again several hours later, shortly before midnight. Yamase was reportedly carrying his laptop, wallet and a supermarket bag, while also holding a bag containing toilet paper. It is perhaps the least glamorous detail in the entire scoop, but it also gives the story its most ordinary touch: whatever happens on a baseball field, even a promising young catcher eventually has to carry the shopping home.

The FRIDAY account says the two returned to the same residence after walking together, with their relaxed behaviour giving the impression of a couple already comfortable with each other's company. The publication reportedly approached the Yomiuri Giants and Yamane's agency for comment about the relationship and any future marriage plans, but neither side provided a response by the stated deadline.

The timing is particularly interesting for Yamase, whose professional career is entering an important stage. The catcher is not simply a young player waiting for an opportunity anymore; his first-team appearances and improved hitting have begun to create expectations that he could challenge more seriously for a regular position. If his reported relationship with Yamane is indeed as established as described, he now has another storyline unfolding alongside the baseball one.

For Yamane, meanwhile, the reported connection places her alongside one of Japanese baseball's most recognisable clubs and one of its emerging catching prospects. Her established interest in sport, particularly sumo, means the pairing does not come entirely out of nowhere.

A Giants supporter becoming involved with a Giants catcher is, admittedly, the sort of plot development that sounds suspiciously convenient for a sports magazine, but sometimes the simplest explanation is also the most entertaining.

Fan reactions are likely to be mixed, although the early appeal of the story lies less in controversy than in the sheer contrast between their public worlds. Some fans may focus on Yamase's growing baseball career and wish to keep attention firmly on his performances, while others will inevitably be curious about the couple's apparent compatibility.

Yamane's existing reputation as a committed sports fan could also make the relationship easier for supporters to understand, particularly given her connection to the Giants.

There is also plenty of room for humour in the imagery surrounding the report. Yamase has built his reputation on possessing a powerful throwing arm capable of shutting down runners, yet FRIDAY presents him here as a man calmly carrying household supplies home with his reported partner.

The transition from stopping stolen bases to transporting toilet paper is not exactly the most dramatic sporting metaphor, but it does make the alleged romance feel considerably more grounded.

At this stage, the report remains a media account rather than a publicly confirmed announcement from the couple. Neither Yamase nor Yamane has publicly confirmed the details described by FRIDAY, and there has been no official announcement concerning marriage. The magazine's 20 August issue and its paid FRIDAY GOLD edition are expected to provide further detail about what the publication describes as changes in Yamase since the relationship began.

For now, the reported romance gives fans another reason to keep an eye on Shinnosuke Yamase, both on the field and away from it. Will the Giants catcher turn his improved form into a regular first-team role, and could Chika Yamane become his biggest supporter from the stands? More importantly, what do you make of the reported pairing: a surprisingly natural match for two sports-loving personalities, or simply another celebrity romance that caught everyone off guard?
