Ren Yu (人鱼), the new Chinese mystery drama starring Huang Yang Tiantian, has opened to a notably quiet response in China, with early popularity figures reportedly remaining below expectations. The series struggled to reach 20,000 on major platform popularity indexes after its premiere, while its share of effective episode views stayed below 2 per cent on the first day. For a drama built around a young actress at a potentially important point in her career, it is hardly the grand entrance anyone would have ordered.
The muted debut has quickly turned attention towards why Ren Yu has struggled to make a stronger first impression. Some Chinese netizens have brought up the actress’s previous luxury earring controversy while discussing the drama, although there is no established evidence that the earlier incident caused the series’ weak opening.
The connection remains online speculation rather than a confirmed explanation, and the distinction matters when a drama’s first-day numbers can be shaped by everything from marketing and competition to the story itself.
Ren Yu, also known as 人鱼, is set in a small town during the 1990s and centres on Su Lin, played by Huang Yang Tiantian. She grows up in a family where sons are given greater importance, leaving her to deal with pressure at home while also facing bullying at school.
Her circumstances change dramatically following an incident during a night of heavy rain, sending the story into a mystery that stretches between an investigation above ground and a struggle for survival below it.
The drama combines mystery with social realism, using Su Lin’s difficult upbringing as the foundation for a much broader story about family expectations, school bullying and life in a tightly connected small-town environment.
On paper, it is considerably heavier and more serious than the sort of easy-going romance that can usually rely on attractive posters and a few clips doing the promotional work. Ren Yu is asking viewers to settle in for a story that appears to have considerably more on its mind.
That ambition, however, has not stopped viewers from questioning whether the casting works. Some audience members and reviewers have argued that Huang Yang Tiantian does not entirely fit the image they expected from Su Lin, particularly because the character is supposed to carry the weight of a difficult childhood and increasingly harsh circumstances.
For those viewers, the issue is not simply appearance but whether the actress convincingly communicates the physical and emotional weariness required by the role. Her performance has also become part of the wider debate. The episode began after the actress shared a selfie from her coming-of-age ceremony, with online users claiming that the earrings she wore were genuine pieces from a major luxury brand and could be worth as much as 2.3 million yuan.
The eye-catching figure naturally sent social media into overdrive, because apparently nothing says peaceful coming-of-age celebration quite like strangers attempting to calculate the value of your accessories.
An investigation later established that the earrings were not genuine luxury jewellery worth millions of yuan but imitation pieces made from glass. However, the investigation also found separate issues involving Huang Yang Tiantian’s father, a government employee.
He was found to have participated in a profit-making business partnership while holding office and to have concealed information concerning an additional child. The matter was subsequently dealt with through administrative disciplinary measures.
The distinction between the jewellery claim and the separate findings is significant. The original online claim about the earrings being genuine luxury jewellery was found to be false, but the wider episode had already attracted substantial attention and continued to follow the actress in online discussions. With Ren Yu now on air, some users have brought the old story back into conversations about her latest project.
One reaction circulating online suggested that seeing Huang Yang Tiantian in the drama immediately reminded the viewer of the earlier episode and made it harder to become absorbed in the story.
Other comments questioned why the production had not considered choosing another actress for the role. Those reactions show that the previous controversy remains part of the online conversation around her, but they still do not prove that it is responsible for Ren Yu’s disappointing opening figures.
There are plenty of other possible explanations for the drama’s slow start. A series can have a strong plot, a capable cast and plenty of twists waiting in the wings, but if viewers barely know it exists, those twists are essentially sitting backstage waiting for an audience that has not been told where the theatre is.
Ren Yu also reportedly failed to secure brand advertising on its first day. That development may suggest a cautious commercial response, but it would be premature to connect it directly to Huang Yang Tiantian’s previous controversy.
There is no confirmed evidence establishing that the two are related, and advertisers can make decisions based on numerous factors, including a drama’s projected audience, genre, timing and commercial strategy.
For now, the most important question is whether Ren Yu can build momentum beyond its first-day numbers. Mystery dramas often benefit from word of mouth once the central puzzle begins to unfold, and Su Lin’s journey still has room to develop as the series progresses.
If the story can deliver stronger revelations and give Huang Yang Tiantian more substantial material to work with, the early numbers may eventually look less important.
At this stage, Ren Yu is facing a familiar problem in the Chinese drama world: a quiet launch can become a lasting label surprisingly quickly, especially when online discussion starts focusing on everything except the actual story.
