Flex X Cop Season 2 Episode 4 wastes very little time putting its newest detective through another bizarre test, as I-soo and newly appointed Team 1 leader Hye-ra go from competitive game-night rivals to unwilling victims in a burning abandoned house. What begins with a rather entertaining clash between two fiercely competitive personalities quickly turns into a much darker investigation involving five bodies, a decades-old murder case and professional killers who seem almost irritatingly good at their jobs.
The episode opens with Hye-ra making her red-carpet debut as the new leader of Team 1, and the response from her colleagues could hardly be more different. Jun-young and Kyung-jin are delighted to have an experienced veteran on their side, while I-soo is still carrying the emotional scars of their previous encounter at the police academy.
A colleague who worked with Hye-ra before reassures him that she is actually relaxed and highly competent, although he does issue one very specific warning: never make a competition out of anything with her unless he has several hours to spare.
Naturally, I-soo ignores the spirit of that warning almost immediately. During the team's welcome drinks, he spots a dartboard offering free drinks for anyone who reaches 1,000 points and decides to have a go.
He wins the first round, which is apparently the worst possible thing he could have done because Hye-ra's competitive instincts instantly take over. What should have been a quick game turns into an endurance contest, with the pair refusing to give the other an inch until the bartender eventually has to ask Jun-young and Kyung-jin to intervene.
That still does not end it. The rivalry simply moves elsewhere, with I-soo and Hye-ra travelling from one game complex to another and continuing to challenge each other well into the night.
It is one of the episode's lighter stretches, and it works because their rivalry feels fundamentally different from I-soo's previous relationship with Gang-yun. Rather than simply finding him troublesome, Hye-ra has the ability and temperament to challenge him on his own terms.
The following day, however, the fun disappears rather quickly when I-soo receives a tip through the team's app about a supposed ghost inside an abandoned house.
Hye-ra joins him to investigate, while A-hin, the middle-school student who submitted the tip, watches excitedly from her bedroom window after discovering that the detectives actually responded. It is an innocent enough setup, but this is a crime drama, so obviously nobody should be expecting a friendly ghost story.
Someone attacks I-soo and Hye-ra inside the property, ties them to chairs and sets the house on fire. The pair manage to escape before the situation becomes fatal, helped by A-hin's quick decision to call the police after noticing the flames. Jun-young, Kyung-jin, the police and firefighters soon arrive, turning what initially looked like an eccentric investigation into a serious arson case.
While examining the abandoned property, I-soo notices something that does not fit. A locked basement has a brand-new padlock, which makes little sense for a building that has supposedly been left unused.
Hye-ra immediately reminds him that breaking into the basement without proper authorisation could cause problems later, but I-soo has never been especially interested in allowing paperwork to stand between him and a suspicious door.
When Hye-ra steps outside to contact Mr Park about a search warrant, I-soo promptly finds his own solution. He buys the house. Jun-young and Kyung-jin are hardly surprised, having already become accustomed to his unconventional methods, while Hye-ra quickly learns what can only be described as I-soo's personal cheat code: when normal police procedure becomes inconvenient, simply become the owner of the building.
Inside the basement, the team discovers a freshly cemented section of flooring. It sounds hollow, so Kyung-jin digs into it and the investigation suddenly becomes much bigger. Forensics arrives and the detectives uncover five bodies hidden inside suitcases beneath the floor.
What began as a report about a ghost has now become a major murder investigation, proving once again that the most suspicious thing about an abandoned house is usually not the ghost.
Mr Park assigns Team 1 and Team 2 to work together and orders them to keep the discovery away from the press while the forensic team works on identifying the victims. The house has a grim history of its own.
In 2016, a couple and their university-aged son were murdered there, with Byung-sik having worked on the original investigation before eventually classifying it as a cold case because nobody was ever caught.
I-soo quickly develops a theory that the property was not simply abandoned after the 2016 murders. Instead, he believes someone may have been using it as a secret burial site. That suspicion gains weight when investigators find glasses in the pocket of the most recently buried victim, giving Team 2 a possible route towards identifying the person.
Meanwhile, Team 1 concentrates on the arson attack. CCTV footage leads them towards a possible suspect and eventually to a car rental connection involving Jeong Dae-un, who is arrested and admits that she started the fire. Her explanation, however, is not quite what the detectives expected.
Dae-un says a lawyer named Hyeon-su and his girlfriend had disappeared, but nobody took her concerns seriously. Hyeon-su's former classmate, Kim Min-seo, had been murdered, and Hyeon-su had subsequently been identified as the culprit. Dae-un tried to argue that he was being wrongly blamed, but investigators had already decided the evidence against him was overwhelming.
Her own investigation led her to the abandoned house after discovering that Hyeon-su had installed a location-tracking app on her phone. According to the information she found, the house was the final location associated with Hyeon-su on the day of Min-seo's murder. Dae-un had taken her concerns to the police, only to be dismissed by the detective handling the original case.
She eventually discovered the basement and attempted to open it herself. When that failed, she deliberately set the property on fire in the hope that the police would be forced to investigate the building properly. As she leaves the station, Dae-un identifies Byung-sik as the detective who had previously refused to believe her.
Byung-sik explains why the original investigation pointed towards Hyeon-su. According to the evidence, the suspect killed Min-seo at her home before fleeing on a motorcycle to Hyeon-su's house and then leaving in Hyeon-su's car.
Team 2 also uncovers a series of details that made the case against Hyeon-su look convincing: he had repeatedly contacted Min-seo, threatened her after she refused to meet him, and she had filed a restraining order against him.
The knife recovered from the crime scene carried Hyeon-su's fingerprints and matched a knife missing from his home. Investigators also found the courier disguise believed to have been worn by the killer at Hyeon-su's property. Before the police could arrest him, however, Hyeon-su vanished and was placed on the wanted list.
Then the glasses found with the latest body change everything. Team 2 discovers they had been prescribed to Hyeon-su, raising the possibility that the supposedly missing suspect had actually been dead all along. Hye-ra orders the team to compare the unidentified victim's DNA with Hyeon-su's, and the result confirms their suspicion: the body buried beneath the abandoned house is Hyeon-su.
The detectives begin piecing together a far more elaborate plan. They conclude that professional killers were hired to eliminate Min-seo, but Hyeon-su was first turned into the perfect suspect.
They killed him, used his phone to send threatening messages to Min-seo and then murdered her at her apartment, making the evidence appear to point directly towards Hyeon-su.
His body was subsequently buried at the abandoned house, while his car was left at the port to create the impression that he had fled the country. Once Hyeon-su disappeared, the investigation could gradually become another unresolved case. It is a neat plan, which is precisely why it causes such a headache for the detectives.
The team eventually concludes that two professional killers were hired to target Min-seo. More importantly, when those killers attacked I-soo and Hye-ra at the abandoned house, they were apparently there to bury another body.
That means the five victims may not represent the full extent of the mystery. Hye-ra therefore orders the team to reopen the investigation from the beginning and examine every detail again.
The final moments reveal just how much trouble Team 1 has walked into. The hired killers, Jang Jae-chun and Jo Beom-ki, are shown beside another body near a river, alongside Yu Tae-gwang, a mysterious figure presented as the killer of killers. The reveal gives the episode a much wider scope and makes it clear that the abandoned-house case is only one piece of something considerably bigger.
As for Tae-gyun, he remains determined to remove I-soo from detective work and tries to use the purchase of the abandoned house as ammunition against him. Hye-ra refuses to play along, pointing out that I-soo has not actually broken the rules in the way Tae-gyun wants him to believe. She also blocks an attempt to hand the investigation over to Seoul headquarters, insisting that Team 1 can solve the case themselves.
The episode's biggest strength is the evolving relationship between I-soo and Hye-ra. Their constant one-upmanship gives the story a lighter edge without undermining the increasingly complicated mystery.
I-soo is still the same unpredictable detective who likes solving problems with money and questionable levels of confidence, but his time at the police academy has clearly made him more capable. Hye-ra recognises that, even if she would probably rather swallow a whistle than admit it too quickly.
The contrast with Gang-yun is particularly noticeable. Gang-yun often treated I-soo as a nuisance who happened to be useful, whereas Hye-ra approaches him more like a rival. She challenges his instincts, questions his methods and refuses to be intimidated by his unconventional approach. That creates a much more entertaining partnership because neither character is willing to simply become the other's sidekick.
The mystery itself also benefits from the decision to hold back the real villains until the closing scenes. Viewers spend most of the episode trying to understand what happened to Hyeon-su, only to discover that his death was part of a carefully constructed setup. Just when the detectives appear to have found the answer, the episode effectively says, "Actually, there is another layer," and rolls the credits.
For fans, reactions to the episode are likely to vary. Some will enjoy the increasingly complicated investigation and the reveal of Jang Jae-chun, Jo Beom-ki and Yu Tae-gwang, particularly because it gives the second season a larger mystery to carry forward.
Others may find the chain of clues increasingly elaborate, with the case requiring the detectives to make several deductions before reaching the truth. The I-soo and Hye-ra rivalry, meanwhile, is likely to be one of the more broadly entertaining parts of the episode, especially for viewers who wanted a different dynamic after the first season.
The 177-word review: Episode 4 is where Flex X Cop Season 2 starts to feel properly confident about what it wants its second season to be. The comedy remains intact, particularly whenever I-soo turns another ordinary situation into an absurd display of wealth or stubbornness, but the central investigation has enough weight to keep the episode from becoming a collection of jokes.
The abandoned-house mystery is particularly effective because every answer creates another question, and the final reveal expands the story without making the earlier clues completely pointless.
The episode also understands that character chemistry can be just as important as the mystery itself. I-soo and Hye-ra are an entertaining pairing because neither is prepared to surrender the upper hand.
Their competitive streak gives the story some welcome energy, while Hye-ra's experience prevents I-soo from simply bulldozing his way through every investigation. The final appearance of Yu Tae-gwang adds another intriguing threat, although the detectives are still several steps behind.
Overall, Episode 4 leaves Flex X Cop Season 2 in a strong position. The case is messier, the villains are more elusive and I-soo finally has someone who can keep pace with him. Now the question is whether Team 1 can catch the killers before another body appears — and whether I-soo will discover an even more ridiculous shortcut along the way.
