Netflix’s My Brilliant Career may take viewers into a world of grand estates, sprawling gardens and complicated country-house relationships, but two of its most memorable locations are not quite what they appear to be. Caddagat and Five Bob Downs are fictional homes created for Sybylla Melvyn’s story, yet both were brought to life using real historic properties in South Australia, giving the series an impressive period setting without having to build an entire 19th-century estate from scratch.
For Sybylla, played as the story moves from an impoverished family life into a far more privileged environment, Caddagat represents a dramatic change in circumstances. Her grandmother, Mrs Bossier, takes her under her wing and brings her to the estate, where Sybylla is exposed to education, refinement and the expectations of a completely different social world.
The fictional estate therefore becomes much more than a pretty backdrop; it is the place where her horizons suddenly become considerably wider, whether she is entirely prepared for that development or not.
Caddagat itself is not a real estate, but the mansion viewers see on screen certainly is. The production used Yallum Park Homestead on Mount Burr Road in Monbulla, South Australia, for the exterior scenes depicting Sybylla’s new home.
Built between 1878 and 1880 for John Riddoch, the Victorian mansion already had much of the grandeur required to sell the illusion of Caddagat, meaning the filmmakers had the rather convenient advantage of starting with a house that already looked as though it had been waiting for a period drama to arrive.
The property retains a number of original features that help explain why it works so convincingly on screen. High ceilings, stained-glass windows, marble mantelpieces and preserved 19th-century English wallpapers give Yallum Park an unmistakable historic character. Its gardens and surrounding grounds add another layer to the setting, making Caddagat feel like a substantial family estate rather than simply a mansion placed in front of a camera for a few convenient shots.
Yallum Park also comes with a history of its own, having welcomed notable visitors including King George V and poet Adam Lindsay Gordon. The property has been carefully preserved over the years and offers public viewing and tours, although it remains a private historic property rather than a fictional playground where fans can simply wander in and recreate Sybylla’s arrival.
In other words, visitors can experience the real place, but probably should not expect Harry to appear dramatically on horseback. The interior of Caddagat is understood to have been recreated separately, with Adelaide Studios in Glenside providing the production base for interior filming.
That approach allowed the production team to combine the authentic architecture of Yallum Park with carefully controlled sets, giving the fictional home the scale and atmosphere of a genuine Victorian residence while still allowing the filmmakers to shape the rooms around the story.
Then there is Five Bob Downs, another fictional location that becomes increasingly important to Sybylla. While Caddagat introduces her to a wealthier and more sophisticated world, Five Bob Downs becomes closely associated with her personal development, particularly her ambition to become a writer. It is also the home of the fictional Beecham family, including Harry, who develops into one of the central figures in Sybylla’s emotional journey.
Once again, the house does not exist under the name Five Bob Downs. The production instead used Para Para Mansion in Gawler West, South Australia, for its exterior scenes. The historic property was created for Walter Duffield between 1851 and 1862, giving it considerably more real-world history than the fictional Beecham residence it portrays.
Para Para Mansion has been maintained through successive caretakers and remains an important historic property in its own right. Around 12 acres of the estate have since been developed as a lavender farm, adding a rather unexpected modern chapter to a property that spends much of My Brilliant Career pretending to belong to another era.
The mansion also opened to the public again in 2026 after a 25-year period, giving visitors an opportunity to explore its history and see the setting beyond the production. The production design around Five Bob Downs also helped transform the real property into a convincing home for the Beechams.
Furnishings, wallpapers, velvet textures and decorative details were selected to reflect the personalities and status of the household, with Augusta in particular receiving an interior that reflects her more extravagant character.
Peacock feathers, richly textured materials and colourful walls give the rooms a deliberately lavish appearance, while antique leather books were sourced for Harry’s study to make the setting feel properly lived in rather than suspiciously fresh from a props warehouse.
Other details were added to strengthen the period atmosphere, including materials used for the New Year’s Eve party and additional decorative elements intended to evoke the early 20th century.
The result is a location that feels substantially different from Caddagat, even though both homes belong to the same broad historical world. That distinction matters because the two houses represent different stages of Sybylla’s journey and carry very different emotional weight.
Fans have reacted differently to the locations, with some viewers particularly interested in discovering that the grand houses seen throughout My Brilliant Career are real South Australian properties rather than entirely constructed sets.
For viewers who enjoy filming-location details, the discovery adds another layer to the series because the real architecture has its own history long before Sybylla ever walked through its doors. Others may simply be surprised that places this grand still exist, especially when so many period dramas make lavish estates look almost too perfect to be real.
The contrast between the fictional story and the real locations is arguably one of the most appealing parts of the production. Caddagat and Five Bob Downs were created for Sybylla’s fictional world, but the mansions representing them have histories that stretch back well beyond the events depicted on screen.
That gives My Brilliant Career a useful sense of authenticity without requiring the audience to believe every grand house in the story was magically preserved solely for the arrival of a Netflix camera crew.
