| Zhang Linghe’s Honest Health Confession Goes Viral and Fans Say They Had No Idea He Was Struggling. (Weibo) |
Zhang Linghe has built a reputation as one of Chinese entertainment's busiest rising stars, always appearing polished, energetic and effortlessly composed. That image, however, took an unexpectedly human turn after his appearance on the variety programme Our Dormitories Season 2: Back to Heart, where the actor candidly revealed a string of health challenges that have quietly followed him behind the cameras. Instead of talking about upcoming projects, he ended up giving fans a glimpse into a reality that was far less glamorous and far more relatable.
During a relaxed conversation with hosts including He Jiong and Yang Di, Zhang Linghe spoke about recently undergoing allergy testing, only to discover that the results were far more dramatic than he had imagined.

The actor revealed he is allergic to eggs, cakes and even beer made through wheat fermentation. For someone working long hours on film and television sets, where meals are often whatever is available between takes, that discovery was hardly welcome news.
The symptoms are not exactly minor inconveniences either. According to Zhang Linghe, eating the wrong food can trigger acute rhinitis alongside widespread red rashes across his body.

He also explained that allergies can change over time depending on a person's physical condition, a point that He Jiong also highlighted during the discussion, noting that the body's reactions are constantly evolving. In other words, today's safe meal could become tomorrow's problem, which is hardly the kind of surprise anyone wants on a filming schedule.
As if avoiding favourite foods was not enough, the actor revealed another doctor's recommendation that sounded almost cruel in his eyes.
He was advised to stop drinking coffee. His immediate reaction was one many coffee lovers would understand. Giving up caffeine, he admitted, felt like one of the harshest instructions he could receive.

That confession quickly led to another revelation about his daily routine. Zhang Linghe shared that he had developed the habit of drinking extremely strong American coffee first thing every morning on an empty stomach. It was not simply about enjoying the taste. Coffee had become his survival tool after years of struggling with poor sleep.
The actor admitted he previously suffered from serious insomnia. During the worst periods, he could lie in bed doing absolutely nothing and still fail to fall asleep.
Ironically, knowing he had an early call time the following morning only made the situation worse, creating a cycle where anxiety kept him awake even longer.
Eventually, exhaustion forced him to rely on multiple cups of concentrated coffee just to remain alert enough to work through demanding filming days.

Thankfully, he says the situation has improved slightly. These days, scrolling through his phone sometimes helps him drift off naturally, which sounds almost funny considering people are usually told to do exactly the opposite before bed. Still, compared with nights spent staring at the ceiling for hours, it represents welcome progress.
His medical examination also reportedly found that excessive coffee consumption was contributing to physical weakness and episodes of heart palpitations.
Zhang Linghe openly admitted he had experienced those symptoms himself, acknowledging that he had probably relied on caffeine far more than he should have. Sometimes the body really does send reminder notifications that cannot simply be swiped away.

Fans were equally surprised to hear more details about the physical demands of his acting career. To prepare for one previous role, the towering actor reportedly underwent an extreme weight-loss programme, reducing his weight dramatically in order to match the character's appearance.
Colleagues reportedly became concerned after seeing just how thin he had become, highlighting the often unseen pressures performers face when transforming themselves for the screen.
Old filming injuries also resurfaced during discussions surrounding his health. While working on the historical drama The Road to Glory, Zhang Linghe suffered a serious knee injury that left him unable to properly bend his leg and needing support simply to walk.
Rather than focusing attention on himself, he reportedly recorded several lengthy voice messages to reassure fans waiting at the filming location, insisting it was only a minor sprain and encouraging them not to worry. Looking back now, many supporters feel the actor understated just how painful the situation really was.
Chinese social media quickly filled with reactions after clips from the programme circulated online. One trending discussion revolved around fans saying their concern had arrived "late" because they never realised how much Zhang Linghe had been dealing with behind the scenes.
For now, Zhang Linghe appears determined to make improvements while continuing with his career, and fans are clearly hoping those doctor's recommendations are taken seriously.
