The complicated position of King Hyo-jong could also become a central storyline. While he secretly brought together Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang to investigate the curse, questions remain over how much he truly knows about the kingdom's hidden history.
A follow-up season could reveal difficult political decisions, buried royal secrets and uncomfortable truths stretching back decades before the current events. The emotional journeys of the two protagonists also feel far from complete.
Gu-cheon's mysterious ability to cross between the living and spirit realms still carries unanswered questions, while Saeng-gang's lifelong connection to the voices of the dead may have deeper origins than anyone initially realised. Exploring the source of their supernatural abilities could become just as important as fighting the next wave of restless spirits.
The East Palace Season 2 could also raise the stakes by introducing an enemy even more dangerous than the original curse. Instead of isolated hauntings, the kingdom itself could face a growing supernatural crisis capable of threatening every royal family, government official and ordinary citizen.
Bigger mysteries, stronger spirits and higher emotional stakes would provide a natural evolution without abandoning the eerie atmosphere that made the first season stand out.
If Netflix eventually gives The East Palace another season, a release before late 2027 would seem unlikely. Productions of this scale generally require between 18 and 24 months for writing, filming, post-production and extensive visual effects work. A 2028 premiere would therefore not be surprising if renewal arrives after Netflix finishes assessing the show's overall performance.
