There are busy actors, and then there is Song Weilong in July 2026. While most stars are hoping one drama lands with viewers, Song has somehow ended up leading two of China's biggest television releases at exactly the same time. Contemporary romance Love For You (野狗骨头) and fantasy epic The Eternal Fragrance (千香) premiered just a day apart, turning the actor into his own biggest rival. Rather than competing with another leading man, Chinese viewers have jokingly found themselves choosing between two completely different versions of the same star every evening.

The unusual scheduling has quickly become one of the hottest talking points across Chinese entertainment. On one side is Love For You, adapted from the novel Wild Dog Bones, where Song Weilong sheds his polished image to become Chen Yi, a rough-edged young man carrying years of emotional scars.

Opposite Zhang Jingyi, he portrays a man who grows up alongside his non-biological sister as the pair navigate family hardship, separation and eventual reunion in a heartfelt story built around healing and mutual support.

On the other side sits The Eternal Fragrance, where Song Weilong swaps dusty streets for immortal realms as Lei Xiuyuan, a mysterious demon lord caught in a tragic romance spanning the celestial and demonic worlds.

Reuniting with Ju Jingyi, the fantasy drama embraces breathtaking costumes, large-scale mythology and emotional sacrifice, giving audiences a completely different side of the actor within the space of 24 hours.

The numbers suggest viewers are happily making time for both. Love For You attracted more than 3.6 million pre-launch reservations before its premiere, while The Eternal Fragrance surpassed 4 million reservations, highlighting enormous anticipation for both productions.

Shortly after release, Love For You built strong television ratings and a rapidly climbing online popularity index, while The Eternal Fragrance raced to the top of its streaming platform's popularity rankings, with its heat index soaring beyond 9,500 as fantasy fans embraced its emotional storytelling and lavish production.

The Eternal Fragrance and Love For You Make Song Weilong the Most Talked About Actor in China

If that was not enough, Love For You has already added another achievement to its growing list. The drama officially became the highest-rated television drama premiere of 2026 after making its debut on Hunan TV and Mango TV

On its opening night, audience ratings peaked above 0.66, placing it first among provincial satellite television channels and setting a new benchmark for drama premieres this year. It is the kind of start producers dream about and competitors probably pretend not to notice.

Much of the praise has focused on Song Weilong's striking transformation into Chen Yi. Sporting a buzz cut, rugged appearance and a noticeably tougher screen presence, he moves away from the elegant leading-man image audiences know so well.

Beneath the hardened exterior, however, lies a deeply compassionate character shaped by hardship, creating a layered performance that many viewers say feels refreshingly grounded.

Meanwhile, Zhang Jingyi earns equally strong praise for bringing warmth, resilience and quiet determination to Miao Jing, allowing their relationship to develop naturally rather than relying on exaggerated melodrama.

The series also benefits from its carefully crafted setting. Filmed in Huizhou, Guangdong, the fictional town of Tengcheng feels authentic through its everyday details, from ageing apartment blocks and modest local shops to period household appliances and regional customs that recreate the atmosphere of southern China during the era.

Rather than chasing glossy perfection, the production embraces ordinary life, something many viewers have highlighted as one of its greatest strengths.

Love For You Becomes 2026's Biggest Drama Premiere as Song Weilong Scores Another Hit

During the Beijing premiere event themed "Return to Tengcheng", the cast recreated several memorable scenes from the drama while interactive activities inspired by Guangdong culture gave audiences an early taste of the show's nostalgic atmosphere.

Song Weilong explained that he viewed Chen Yi as an inherently kind man forced to hide his vulnerability behind a tough exterior after growing up in difficult circumstances. According to the actor, it is only when Miao Jing truly understands him that Chen Yi gradually allows himself to trust someone again.

Zhang Jingyi shared a similar perspective on her character, describing Miao Jing's stubborn personality not as recklessness but as quiet determination. She believes Miao Jing spends years searching for emotional stability before discovering someone willing to share both her burdens and her hopes.

Their relationship, she explained, is built on years of growing together rather than instant attraction, making their emotional connection feel earned instead of convenient. That sense of emotional realism has become one of Love For You's biggest strengths. Chen Yi and Miao Jing are not portrayed as flawless heroes with ideal lives.

Love For You Premiere Smashes Ratings as Song Weilong Impresses in Two Very Different Roles

They carry painful family histories, endure misunderstandings, experience long separations and repeatedly choose to support one another despite life's setbacks. Their journey is less about fairy-tale romance and more about two ordinary people refusing to let difficult circumstances define them.

Meanwhile, The Eternal Fragrance continues to satisfy audiences looking for grand fantasy storytelling. Song Weilong's calm yet commanding portrayal of Lei Xiuyuan stands in complete contrast to Chen Yi's grounded vulnerability, proving just how wide his acting range can be.

Many fans admitted they are struggling to keep up with both C-dramas because each delivers something entirely different. They spend one evening admiring Song Weilong's Chen Yi (Love For You) rugged charm before immediately crying over Lei Xiuyuan's (The Eternal Fragrance) tragic fate the next.
