The final episode of Key to the Phoenix Heart (雀骨) may have wrapped up its central romance, but it certainly didn't silence the conversation. Since the iQIYI historical drama reached its emotional conclusion, viewers have been asking the same question: will Key to the Phoenix Heart Season 2 actually happen? While the series delivered a heartfelt ending for its main couple, it also left enough room for audiences to believe this world still has more stories waiting to be told.

Starring Hou Minghao and Ai Mi, the 2026 costume drama became one of iQIYI's standout historical romances thanks to its blend of palace intrigue, battlefield strategy, political conspiracies and an enemies-to-lovers relationship that gradually evolved into genuine trust. Rather than relying purely on spectacle, the series invested heavily in its characters, making the ending feel earned while leaving viewers surprisingly reluctant to let go.

That reluctance has only fuelled speculation about a possible second season. The finale resolved the biggest conflicts, yet several story threads felt intentionally left breathing rather than completely sealed.

It gave audiences closure, but perhaps not enough closure to stop them refreshing social media every few hours in search of good news. Hope can apparently be quite exhausting.

So, has Key to the Phoenix Heart been renewed for Season 2? At the time of writing, iQIYI and the production team have not officially renewed Key to the Phoenix Heart for Season 2. No formal announcement has been made regarding another instalment, and there is currently no confirmed production schedule, script development or filming timetable.

Even so, the conversation refuses to disappear. Shortly after the finale aired, reports circulated that a member of the production crew suggested the story may not necessarily be finished. While those remarks should be treated cautiously and do not represent an official confirmation, they have naturally encouraged fans to keep believing another chapter remains possible.

Adding to the speculation, a respected Weibo user within the Chinese drama community reportedly responded to a fan asking about Key to the Phoenix Heart Season 2 with a simple, "Let's wait and see." It is hardly a confirmation, but it is also not the sort of answer that completely shuts the door. In television terms, that sentence has probably generated enough theories to fill another 28 episodes.

One factor working in the drama's favour is its popularity. Throughout its broadcast, Key to the Phoenix Heart built strong momentum across domestic platforms and attracted growing international attention.

While the final Douban score and complete viewing figures have yet to be fully established, the series consistently generated discussion on Weibo and maintained healthy audience engagement during its run.

However, popularity alone does not guarantee another season in the Chinese television industry. Unlike many Western productions, Chinese dramas are traditionally developed as complete standalone stories.

Even successful series often conclude after one season because the cast, creative team and production companies quickly move on to new projects. Although sequel seasons have become more common in recent years, they remain the exception rather than the rule.

That makes Key to the Phoenix Heart Season 2 something of an interesting possibility rather than an expectation. Reports also suggest that if another season were ever considered, audience enthusiasm would likely play an important role.

Continued interest, strong online discussion and sustained popularity could influence future conversations behind the scenes. Nothing has been promised, but neither has the idea been completely dismissed.

The Key to the Phoenix Heart ending itself certainly leaves enough material for another chapter. The finale revealed that Xiao Wu Yi survived the Battle of Dingfengpo after everyone believed he had died.

Having lost his memory and lived under a different identity for three years, he eventually reunited with Xie Jia Yu, with a simple red ribbon restoring memories that neither time nor war could truly erase. It was an emotional payoff that rewarded viewers who had invested in their long journey together.

Another major revelation confirmed Xiao Wu Yi as the lost Crown Prince. Yet instead of embracing supreme power, he chose to walk away from the throne in favour of a peaceful life with Jia Yu. Meanwhile, Li Mao ascended as emperor, while several supporting characters received endings balancing sacrifice, redemption and hope.

On paper, it looks like a complete conclusion. In practice, it quietly leaves several fascinating questions behind.

If Key to the Phoenix Heart Season 2 were ever produced, the story could easily explore the political consequences of Xiao Wu Yi rejecting the throne. Even with Li Mao ruling the empire, powerful nobles, rival factions and ambitious military leaders may not simply accept the new balance of power. Peace in palace dramas tends to last about five minutes before somebody starts plotting again.

Another possible direction could examine the married life of Xiao Wu Yi and Xie Jia Yu. Their relationship finally escaped manipulation and political arrangements, but living peacefully after surviving years of conspiracies may prove easier said than done. Court politics have a habit of following people home whether invited or not.

The writers could also expand the world beyond the original rebellion. Border conflicts, new alliances and emerging rivals could present fresh threats while allowing returning characters to develop further. With the series establishing such a rich historical setting, there remains plenty of room for additional stories without undoing the satisfying ending audiences have already received.

Should Key to the Phoenix Heart Season 2 eventually receive approval, a release sometime in late 2027 would appear to be a realistic expectation based on the typical production cycle for major Chinese historical dramas. That remains entirely speculative, but lengthy development and filming schedules make an immediate return highly unlikely.

As for the cast, fans would undoubtedly hope to see Hou Minghao and Chen Ai Mi reprise their leading roles. Much of the drama's success rested on their chemistry, and replacing them would almost certainly be a difficult sell. Their performances transformed political negotiations into emotional battles, making even the quietest scenes memorable.

Fans, unsurprisingly, have wasted little time making their feelings known. Some insist the world-building deserves another season, while others argue the chemistry between the two leads is far too strong to leave behind after only one story.

Many have joked that the finale felt less like a goodbye and more like a producer whispering, "We'll see," before disappearing into the distance. Others have even called for petitions supporting another season, convinced the story still has unfinished business.

For now, though, optimism should be balanced with patience. Key to the Phoenix Heart Season 2 has not been officially confirmed, and until iQIYI or the production team says otherwise, every sequel discussion remains speculation. Still, the combination of strong audience support, encouraging rumours and an ending that leaves just enough room for another adventure means the possibility cannot be completely ruled out.

Would you like Key to the Phoenix Heart to return for another season, or do you think Xiao Wu Yi and Xie Jia Yu received the perfect ending already?
