Chungseong, one of South Korea's most celebrated rescue dogs, has officially retired after seven years of frontline service with Busan's 119 Special Rescue Unit, bringing an extraordinary career to a close. While plenty of people dream about retiring after years of hard work, very few leave behind a record of nearly 300 rescue missions and 16 lives saved. Safe to say, Chungseong has earned a far more impressive retirement story than most office workers.
The 11-year-old Belgian Malinois officially stepped down on 1 July after the Busan Fire and Disaster Department concluded that he was no longer physically suited for demanding emergency rescue operations.
His name, Chungseong, translates to "loyalty" in Korean, and colleagues say he lived up to that meaning every single day throughout his remarkable career.
Since joining the rescue unit in April 2019, Chungseong became one of the department's most dependable four-legged responders.
His deployments included some of the country's most challenging disaster operations, including the 2022 Gwangju Hwajeong I-Park apartment collapse and the 2025 Ulsan thermal power plant collapse, where rescue teams worked under dangerous conditions to search for survivors.
His achievements extended well beyond large-scale disasters. During his years of service, Chungseong successfully located two elderly people living with dementia who had disappeared into mountainous areas.
One rescue took place on Samgaksan in Gijang-gun in 2020, while another successful search near Eungbong Beacon Tower in Saha-gu in 2023 reunited another missing resident with their relieved family.
Those moments became some of the clearest reminders that rescue work is not always about dramatic headlines but also about quietly bringing loved ones home.
When he was not responding to emergencies, Chungseong proved he could compete just as well as he could search. The veteran rescue dog won South Korea's National 119 Rescue Dog Competition twice and collected two more podium finishes at national events, building a reputation as one of the country's finest working dogs.
Some dogs fetch tennis balls. Chungseong collected trophies between rescue missions. That's setting the bar rather unfairly for the rest of the canine world.
To recognise his years of dedication, the Busan Fire and Disaster Department held a retirement ceremony this week at its headquarters in Haeundae.
Current and former handlers gathered alongside the family chosen to welcome him into retirement, turning what could have been a routine farewell into an emotional celebration of loyalty, teamwork and years of service.
One of Chungseong's longtime handlers reflected on the occasion, saying it marked the beginning of a completely different life for a dog who had always trained with the possibility of being deployed to disaster sites at any moment.
He expressed hope that Chungseong would now enjoy a peaceful and happy retirement after years of disciplined service protecting others.
Perhaps the most touching moment came when firefighters carefully removed Chungseong's official rescue vest and replaced it with a flower garland to honour everything he had accomplished.
It was a simple gesture, but one that symbolised the end of an extraordinary chapter. Even without understanding speeches or ceremonies, Chungseong seemed perfectly happy to accept the attention.
After years of racing into danger, standing still for applause probably felt like a nice change. The department also confirmed that his new home was selected through a thorough screening process.
Chungseong will now live with his adoptive family in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, where his days will hopefully involve fewer emergency sirens and considerably more naps, treats and well-earned affection.
Across social media, netizens were quick to celebrate the heroic dog's retirement. Many described Chungseong as a national hero, thanking him for years of selfless service despite knowing he would never read the comments.
