Cheng Yi has turned parts of Hong Kong into an unexpected gathering point after filming scenes for his upcoming crime drama Lies Hunter (狩谎). Since production began in early July, crowds of dedicated supporters have been appearing at filming locations across Central, Yau Ma Tei Police Station and the Stanley waterfront, hoping to catch even the briefest glimpse of the Chinese star. Some fans reportedly travelled specifically for the occasion, booking flights, hotels and filling local cafés, restaurants and shops along the way. At this rate, people are half-joking that Cheng Yi deserves an honorary tourism award.

The excitement surrounding Lies Hunter (狩谎) has been building long before cameras started rolling. The series already carried high expectations thanks to its crime-thriller storyline, but its impressive production team has only added more curiosity.

Veteran filmmaker Eric Tsang serves as executive producer, while respected Hong Kong stars Anita Yuen and award-winning actor Tony Leung Ka-fai join the project in special roles.

Behind the camera, several highly respected names from Hong Kong's film industry are also involved, giving the drama an experienced creative team that has quietly impressed industry followers.

Why Cheng Yi's Lies Hunter Is Already One of China's Most Anticipated Dramas

Despite efforts to keep production away from the spotlight, avoiding spoilers has become something of an impossible mission. Actor Edmond Leung briefly shared behind-the-scenes photos showing himself filming a close-quarters fight sequence alongside Cheng Yi, only to remove the images shortly afterwards.

Naturally, deleting them only made fans even more curious. Screenshots spread almost instantly, with Cheng Yi's simple white polo shirt, dark trousers and understated styling becoming an unexpected talking point. Sometimes all it takes is one clean outfit and a serious expression to send social media into detective mode.

Adding even more anticipation is the reunion between Cheng Yi and Xiao Shunyao, who previously shared the screen in Mysterious Lotus Casebook. Lies Hunter marks their third collaboration, something many viewers have welcomed with excitement.

Their previous chemistry has already earned praise, and expectations are high that the pair will once again deliver memorable performances.

In the drama, Cheng Yi plays Lin Yanting, a psychologist carrying the weight of a mysterious past. Gifted with remarkable observation skills and impressive combat abilities, Lin uses his psychological expertise to assist police investigations while quietly pursuing answers about devastating events that destroyed his own family.

Determined to clear his father's name, he joins law enforcement as a consultant, leading him into increasingly dangerous cases where every clue uncovers another uncomfortable truth.

The series promises to blend psychological suspense, emotional storytelling and action into one compelling package. Recent filming in Sheung Wan attracted one of the largest crowds seen during production so far.

Reports from local media described more than a hundred supporters gathering along the streets despite the intense summer heat. Many arrived equipped with folding chairs, handheld fans and enough patience to rival professional marathon spectators.

Importantly, those attending remained inside designated viewing areas and followed instructions from staff throughout the shoot, allowing filming to continue without major disruption.

Witnesses said Cheng Yi appeared briefly surprised after stepping out of his vehicle and noticing the sizeable crowd waiting outside. During indoor scenes, he was spotted filming behind glass while wearing a crisp white shirt, dark trousers and glasses.

Later, production moved outdoors where he tackled chase scenes, running repeatedly up and down staircases with impressive speed. Fans watching from a distance were treated to plenty of action, even if the actor himself was busy concentrating on avoiding missed cues rather than waving every few seconds.

Away from the filming itself, another conversation has quietly emerged online. Many fans admitted they were so focused on Cheng Yi that they barely noticed who else was standing nearby.

That became a source of playful teasing after netizens pointed out that the production team includes some of Hong Kong cinema's most respected names. Apparently, when Cheng Yi adjusts his collar or glances at a script, everything else in the background simply disappears.

Film enthusiasts were quick to highlight the calibre of the crew working behind the scenes. Cinematographer Yip Siu-kei, vice chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers and an award-nominated director of photography, is among those involved.

Veteran filmmaker Ma Chor Yuen, whose career includes several beloved Hong Kong productions, has also been linked to the creative team. Combined with experienced writers and production veterans, Lies Hunter appears to be assembling a remarkably strong group of talent that extends well beyond its headline cast..

That has prompted plenty of discussion across Chinese social media. Some fans joked that Cheng Yi's supporters deserve credit for boosting Hong Kong's local economy through hotels, transport and shopping and that the fandom completely overlooked the famous filmmakers working on set because everyone's attention stayed fixed on the leading man.
