The enormous success of Backrooms has left horror fans with one big question: when are we going back? A24 and director Kane Parsons have yet to officially confirm Backrooms 2, but that has done little to stop speculation. After transforming one of the internet's most recognisable urban legends into a cinematic horror event, the first film closed with enough unanswered mysteries to make a return feel more like a matter of when than if. If anything, audiences walked away with more questions than answers, which is probably exactly how the Backrooms wanted it.

The first film followed Clark, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, after he stumbled through a mysterious doorway hidden beneath a furniture shop and entered the endless maze of yellow walls, humming fluorescent lights and impossible corridors.

What began as curiosity gradually descended into psychological terror, with the strange entities inside the Backrooms reflecting the darkest parts of those trapped within them. By the closing moments, Clark met a brutal fate, while Dr Mary Kline, portrayed by Renate Reinsve, survived long enough to uncover fragments of the truth surrounding the extradimensional labyrinth, leaving her future hanging in uncertainty.

Although Backrooms 2 has not received an official green light, the outlook remains surprisingly positive. Industry chatter emerged shortly after the original film's strong box office performance suggesting another instalment was already being discussed.

Those reports claimed Kane Parsons would return and was searching for a writing partner to expand the universe further. Parsons himself quickly cooled those rumours during an appearance on The Town podcast, joking that the reports sounded "more like a hallucination." It was hardly a confirmation, but it was also far from a denial. In the world of the Backrooms, uncertainty almost feels like official marketing.

Based on current development timelines, if production moves ahead within the next year, Backrooms 2 could realistically arrive between late 2027 and early 2028. Nothing has been announced by A24, but considering the popularity of the first film and the growing fanbase surrounding Parsons' work, few would be shocked if an official announcement appears sooner rather than later.

One encouraging sign for the sequel is that much of the enormous practical set reportedly remains intact. The sprawling 30,000-square-foot Backrooms environment became one of the original film's greatest strengths, creating an atmosphere that never relied solely on computer-generated effects.

Keeping those sets available could significantly reduce preparation time while allowing the creative team to revisit familiar locations without rebuilding the endless nightmare from scratch. After all, why throw away miles of yellow wallpaper when audiences are more than happy to get lost in it again?

Parsons has also made it clear that the cinematic universe is not separate from the hugely popular YouTube Backrooms series that first introduced millions of viewers to his interpretation of the myth. He confirmed through Discord that the feature film remains fully canon alongside the online found-footage stories.

That decision opens countless storytelling possibilities, allowing future films to weave together events, locations and characters that longtime fans already recognise while remaining accessible to newcomers discovering the franchise through cinemas.

Perhaps the biggest creative clue came during Kane Parsons' interview with Variety, where he described the first film as merely "a foot in the door" towards the much larger mythology that has existed online for years.

That comment strongly suggests the debut film was designed as an introduction rather than a complete exploration of the Backrooms. If a sequel happens, viewers can expect the narrative to venture far beyond endless corridors and into the deeper mysteries surrounding the strange dimension itself.

The biggest question surrounding Backrooms 2 remains its cast. With Clark meeting an unmistakably final end, Chiwetel Ejiofor appears unlikely to return unless the franchise finds a particularly inventive way to revisit his character. Stranger things have happened in science fiction, although even the Backrooms might struggle to explain that one convincingly.

The strongest possibility for a returning lead is Renate Reinsve as Dr Mary Kline. Her fate remains intentionally ambiguous, leaving plenty of room for another appearance whether as herself, a transformed version of herself or something far stranger.

Fans also hope to see Mark Duplass return as Phil, whose knowledge of the mysterious organisation ASync proved essential during the film's final act. Meanwhile, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell could potentially return in new forms connected to the eerie Still Lifes that inhabit the Backrooms.

At the same time, Parsons has repeatedly expressed interest in developing the franchise as an anthology rather than following a single continuous storyline forever.

That approach could introduce an entirely fresh group of characters entering different sections of the Backrooms while expanding the mythology from new perspectives. Considering the infinite nature of the setting, there is certainly no shortage of terrifying places left unexplored.

Story-wise, Backrooms 2 appears perfectly positioned to shift greater attention towards ASync, the secretive organisation studying the strange dimension. Although they remained largely in the background during the first film, their experiments shaped much of what audiences witnessed.

The existence of their hidden research facility inside the safer regions of the Backrooms hints at a much larger operation operating beneath the surface, one that almost certainly knows more than it has revealed.

The sequel could also finally introduce locations that fans of Parsons' online series have wanted to see on the big screen for years. Chief among them is the infamous Red City, a haunting environment drenched in endless crimson that has become one of the franchise's most recognisable locations.

Numerous additional levels, abandoned industrial spaces and reality-defying environments also remain untouched by the first film, offering almost limitless opportunities to expand the cinematic universe without repeating familiar territory.

Of course, every theory ultimately circles back to Mary. Whether she escaped, became trapped forever or transformed into something entirely different remains one of the biggest unresolved mysteries.

Her journey could easily become the emotional centre of the sequel, especially as she inches closer to understanding what the Backrooms truly are and whether anyone who enters can ever genuinely leave.

Fan reactions have been predictably divided, but mostly in the best way possible. Many viewers are eager for Backrooms 2 to answer the questions left behind, while others argue that keeping the mystery intact is exactly what makes the franchise so effective.

Some are desperate to see more of ASync, others simply want to explore stranger levels, and plenty are campaigning for Red City to appear. There are also fans joking that after surviving the first movie, they will never trust an ordinary office corridor or furniture showroom again. Fair enough—that wallpaper has done enough emotional damage already.

Until A24 makes an official announcement, Backrooms 2 remains firmly in the realm of possibility rather than certainty. Even so, Kane Parsons has made it clear that his fascination with the universe is far from over, and the enormous success of the first film has only strengthened interest in seeing where the story goes next.

Next: Backrooms Filming Locations.

Whether it becomes a direct sequel, an anthology entry or something entirely unexpected, the Backrooms still contain countless secrets waiting to be uncovered. What would you like to see in Backrooms 2? Should the sequel continue Mary's story or introduce an entirely new group of unlucky explorers?
