The 27-year-old actress, known for her youthful charm and girl-next-door appeal, has once again become a trending topic after recent birthday pictures and behind-the-scenes images from her new drama Cuo Shi Lu (错世录) prompted widespread debate about her changing appearance. While some viewers expressed concern that cosmetic enhancements may have altered her signature look, others argued that the internet is once again turning a temporary appearance change into a full-scale public investigation.

The latest discussion began after production officially started in Hengdian. Photos from the launch ceremony quickly spread across social media, showing Zhang Miaoyi in a simple production T-shirt and historical hairstyle. 

Without studio lighting, beauty filters or extensive editing, the images presented a far more natural version of the actress than audiences are accustomed to seeing on screen.

For some netizens, however, the difference was striking. Comparisons with her earlier appearances in popular dramas such as When I Fly Towards You and New Life Begins immediately flooded comment sections. 

Critics claimed her facial features appeared noticeably different, with some arguing that the changes had reduced the fresh and youthful image that originally made her stand out. 

Cnetz questioned whether appearance-related treatments had affected her natural expressions, with several online posts suggesting she no longer looked like the actress audiences first fell in love with.

The discussion intensified further when photos from Zhang Miaoyi's recent 27th birthday celebration surfaced online. Wearing a blue-and-white striped dress, styled curls and noticeably heavier makeup than usual, the actress presented a more glamorous and mature image. 

While some fans welcomed the change, others reacted with surprise, that social media had turned into a detective agency trying to identify whether the person in the photographs was really the same actress. More dramatic comments claimed they could hardly recognise her.

Zhang Miaoyi fanbase have pushed back against the speculation, arguing that lighting, makeup, camera angles and work exhaustion can dramatically alter how a person appears in photographs. 

They pointed out that the drama launch took place under intense summer sunlight, conditions that often create harsher shadows, exaggerate facial contours and make people appear more tired than they actually are.

The actress's studio eventually responded to the growing discussion, though it neither confirmed nor denied any rumours. 

Instead, representatives issued a brief statement thanking the public for their concern and assuring followers that Zhang Miaoyi was doing well while preparing seriously for her new role. The measured response did little to slow speculation, with online debate continuing across entertainment forums and social media platforms.

This is far from the first time Zhang Miaoyi has found herself facing intense scrutiny over her appearance. Last year, discussions surrounding her portrayal of a famous literary character generated similar debates, with some audiences questioning whether she matched their personal expectations.

For now, Cuo Shi Lu has only just begun production, meaning audiences have yet to see Zhang Miaoyi's actual performance in the series.
