Zhang Linghe has returned to one of the places that shaped his life long before television fame arrived. On the evening of 17 June, the Chinese actor was spotted visiting his alma mater, Nanjing Normal University, where he quietly walked around campus carrying a camera and taking in the surroundings that once formed part of his everyday routine. For many fans, it was not just another celebrity appearance. It felt more like a former student dropping by to revisit a chapter he never completely left behind.

Photos and videos quickly spread across social media, showing Zhang Linghe strolling through the university grounds at a relaxed pace. Rather than rushing through the visit, he appeared to pause and look around familiar corners of the campus, seemingly reflecting on memories from his university years.

The scenes immediately struck a chord with students, graduates and long-time supporters, many of whom described him as the kind of senior every university wishes it could claim.

Before becoming one of the most recognisable faces in Chinese television, Zhang Linghe built a reputation for something quite different: academics.

In 2016, he earned admission to the School of Electrical Engineering and Automation at Nanjing Normal University after achieving impressive entrance examination results.

His strong performance in mathematics and science subjects established him as a genuine engineering student rather than the kind of celebrity whose academic achievements only appear in publicity materials years later.

His educational background became a talking point again after reports resurfaced that State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power once invited him to experience work within the electrical industry.

The unusual crossover between engineering and entertainment led online users to jokingly label him "the missing colleague from the power company".

It remains one of the more amusing descriptions attached to a leading actor, especially considering most stars are more often compared to fictional characters than electrical engineers.

The nostalgia surrounding his university visit arrived only days after another major appearance in Nanjing, where he attended a promotional event at Jingfeng Centre in Jiangning District

The turnout was enormous. Crowds reportedly filled multiple levels of the shopping centre as fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the actor. Yet despite the scale of the attendance, the atmosphere remained controlled thanks to an extensive security operation that quickly became a talking point in its own right.

The contrast was impossible for many online observers to ignore. Just weeks earlier, a separate event in another city had encountered serious crowd management issues after overwhelming attendance forced organisers to cancel proceedings.

This time, however, the preparations appeared far more robust. Fans were guided through organised entry systems, security personnel were stationed throughout the venue and medical support teams were present on-site.

For once, discussions on social media focused less on crowd chaos and more on how surprisingly smooth everything felt. Many attendees noted that the heightened security measures created a reassuring environment rather than an overly restrictive one.

Several users commented that seeing such extensive planning allowed them to enjoy the event without worrying about potential disruptions.

In a rare moment on social media, complaints were replaced by praise, which may be an even bigger achievement than filling a shopping centre with thousands of excited supporters.

During the event, Zhang Linghe once again highlighted his strong connection to the city. Referring to Nanjing as his "second home", he spoke warmly about places that defined his student years, including Xianlin University Town, Xinjiekou and Jiming Temple

He also recommended local favourites such as soup dumplings and duck blood vermicelli soup to visiting fans, proving that despite years in the spotlight, he still remembers exactly where to find a good meal.

The actor also shared his enthusiasm for photography, explaining that his schedule had been too packed to properly capture the city's scenery this time around.

He joked about wanting more time to photograph Nanjing's famous tree-lined streets and even laughed about whether recent lifestyle changes had made him look slightly healthier. It was a small moment, but one that made the interaction feel personal rather than rehearsed.

Online reactions to both his university visit and public appearance have varied, though the overwhelming mood has been positive. Admirers praised his grounded personality and his willingness to acknowledge his roots despite his growing fame.

Others highlighted his academic achievements, arguing that his journey from engineering student to successful actor remains one of the industry's more interesting career paths.

Some commenters focused entirely on his appearance, insisting that cameras still fail to capture what they described as his real-life presence. As always, social media found room for every possible opinion.

There were also those who appreciated the symbolic side of the story. In an entertainment industry often focused on future projects, endorsements and rankings, seeing a star return to the campus where everything began felt refreshing.

It reminded many followers that behind the polished public image is someone who once worried about exams, lectures and university deadlines like everyone else.

For Zhang Linghe, the visit may have lasted only a short time, but it generated a wave of discussion across Chinese social media. Between memories of university life, conversations about his engineering background and praise for improved event organisation, the actor once again found himself trending for reasons extending far beyond his latest screen appearance. The question now is simple: if you could revisit one place that changed your life, where would it be?
