House of the Dragon wasted no time turning the tide of the Dance of the Dragons, and Episode 2 ended with one of the biggest power shifts the series has delivered so far. Rhaenyra Targaryen finally reclaimed King's Landing, claimed the Iron Throne, and watched two of her greatest enemies fall. But if anyone thinks that means the war is over, they clearly haven't been paying attention. In Westeros, sitting on the throne is usually the easy part. Staying alive on it is where the real trouble begins.
Episode 3 is expected to pick up immediately after that dramatic ending, with Rhaenyra facing the consequences of taking the capital. While she finally sits where she believes she has always belonged, her victory comes wrapped in grief after losing Jacaerys, political uncertainty and a kingdom still divided. Winning the castle is one thing; convincing the rest of the realm to follow her is another entirely.
The emotional fallout is also likely to dominate the next chapter. Rhaenyra personally executed Otto Hightower, while Daemon dealt with Jasper Wylde, marking a darker turn for the queen.
Those moments may have secured her authority inside the Red Keep, but they also reveal how much the war has changed her. The woman once fighting for justice is now discovering that ruling during a civil war rarely leaves room for clean hands.
One of the biggest questions heading into Episode 3 surrounds Alicent Hightower and Helaena Targaryen. Their attempted escape failed, leaving them standing before Rhaenyra moments after she claimed the throne.

Elsewhere, Aemond Targaryen may have created an even bigger problem for himself. His violent takeover of Harrenhal ended with him seriously wounded after killing Simon Strong and his family. As he collapsed, only Alys Rivers remained nearby.
Given her mysterious knowledge and unsettling presence throughout the season, Episode 3 may finally reveal whether she becomes Aemond's unlikely saviour or someone with plans of her own. In Westeros, accepting help from mysterious people living in haunted castles has never been the safest career move.
Attention will also remain on Daemon, who appears more committed than ever to supporting Rhaenyra's claim after revealing his strange visions at Harrenhal. His belief in the prophecy surrounding the future of House Targaryen could shape many of his decisions going forward.
At the same time, his uneasy relationship with Mysaria continues to simmer beneath the surface, suggesting political tension inside the Red Keep is only just beginning.
Beyond the capital, the realm itself remains deeply unstable. Corlys Velaryon survived the devastating Battle of the Gullet, while Addam, Alyn, Baela, Hugh, and Ulf all have unfinished stories that could become increasingly important as dragons continue changing the balance of power.
The fall of King's Landing may feel decisive, but several armies remain active, alliances continue shifting and every victory seems to create three new problems before breakfast.
Fans have been buzzing since Episode 2 aired, with reactions split across social media. Many praised Rhaenyra's long-awaited capture of the capital, calling it one of the most satisfying moments of the series so far. Others were left stunned by Otto Hightower's execution, arguing that removing one of the show's smartest political players so suddenly changes the entire game.
