Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender did not waste any time reminding viewers that curiosity can be both a gift and a spectacularly bad life choice. One of the season's newest faces, Professor Zei, quickly won over audiences with his intelligence, humour and endless passion for history. Unfortunately, his obsession with uncovering forbidden knowledge ended up writing the final chapter of his own story, leaving fans asking one big question: is Zei really dead, and has Hoa Xuande officially left the series?
When Aang, Katara, Sokka and Toph arrive in Ba Sing Se, Sokka forms an unlikely friendship with Professor Zei, a respected scholar from the city's university. Unlike many people living under the city's carefully controlled political system, Zei genuinely wants to uncover the truth.
He introduces Sokka to the legend of a hidden library, a place containing knowledge so valuable that it has effectively been erased from public access. Naturally, hearing the words "secret library" is enough to guarantee that someone is about to ignore every warning imaginable.
Against all expectations, the Gaang discovers a way into the legendary library hidden within the Spirit World. Although Zei was never meant to join the mission, Sokka invites him along, believing the professor deserves the opportunity of a lifetime.
At first, Zei proves to be a valuable companion, respectfully offering a rare scroll to the ancient guardian Wan Shi Tong in exchange for access. The owl spirit agrees, but only after making one condition crystal clear. Any knowledge taken from the library must never be used to harm another person.
While the others search for information that could help stop the Fire Nation, Zei becomes completely captivated by the endless shelves of ancient books. It is every academic's dream holiday, except there is no gift shop and the librarian can actually destroy you.
Eventually, the Gaang discovers two critical pieces of information: Sozin's Comet, which will greatly strengthen Firebenders, and a future solar eclipse that will temporarily strip them of their bending abilities, creating the perfect opportunity to fight back.
That discovery changes everything. When Professor Zei overhears the group's plan to use the information against the Fire Nation, he realises they have violated the promise made to Wan Shi Tong. Instead of protecting his new friends, Zei chooses a different path.
Hoping to secure unlimited access to the library forever, he reveals their plan to the owl spirit. His reasoning is painfully simple.
If the Gaang were banned, he wanted to make sure he could continue studying without them. Knowledge may be priceless, but apparently friendship came with a surprisingly low exchange rate.
The betrayal quickly backfires. Rather than rewarding Zei's honesty, Wan Shi Tong recognises that the professor has also broken the spirit of the agreement.
Zei knowingly placed the Gaang in danger for his own ambition, making him just as guilty. Before turning his attention to the others, the owl attacks Zei first, bringing his journey to a sudden and tragic end.
When the surviving members of the Gaang finally escape the Spirit World, one heartbreaking detail confirms what happened. Professor Zei's physical body has completely vanished from the real world.
Within the series' mythology, this only happens when someone dies inside the Spirit World, leaving no possibility that Zei survived somewhere off-screen. His disappearance serves as the final confirmation that the scholar is gone for good.
Naturally, Zei's death has also raised questions about Hoa Xuande's future in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Based on the events of Season 2, the actor's storyline appears to have reached its natural conclusion.
With Zei definitively dead within the show's universe, there is currently no indication that the character will return in future episodes unless the series introduces flashbacks, visions or another creative twist. In the world of fantasy, audiences have learned never to say never, but for now, Zei's chapter appears firmly closed.
Fans have shared mixed reactions following the emotional episode. Many praised Hoa Xuande for making Zei instantly likeable before revealing his flaws, saying his performance made the betrayal even more painful.
Others admitted they never expected the professor to turn against the Gaang after spending much of the season helping them.
Some viewers sympathised with his overwhelming thirst for knowledge, while others argued that betraying friends for unlimited library access was one of the worst trade deals in television history.
Plenty also expressed disappointment that such an intriguing character was introduced only to disappear so quickly. In the end, Professor Zei's story is less about discovering hidden books and more about the dangers of allowing ambition to outweigh loyalty.
