TVB’s upcoming action drama The Cop Is a Big Shot has officially wrapped filming, but it was not just the celebration dinner that got people talking. At the production’s wrap event on 19 June, Him Law arrived smiling and relaxed, only to reveal that he may have picked up a painful souvenir from the set. While the cast and crew toasted the end of months of filming, the actor admitted he was still dealing with lingering pain from an action sequence that went wrong.

The drama promises plenty of high-energy stunts and fight scenes, and Him Law proudly took on most of them himself. However, one flying kick sequence nearly turned into a much bigger problem.

During the landing, his elbow slammed directly into his rib cage with enough force to leave him wondering whether he had done more than simply bruise himself.

Speaking candidly, Him Law laughed at the situation but admitted it has been far from comfortable.

“To be honest, it still hurts every time I sneeze or cough. When I landed from the flying kick, my elbow hit my rib so hard that everyone nearby heard the impact. The first thing people told me was not to ignore it because this area is very easy to injure. Then, of course, I started overthinking and asking myself whether I had actually cracked something.”

The actor continued with his trademark humour, joking that even basic daily activities have suddenly become a challenge.

“These past few days, whenever I cough, it feels like my whole body is shaking. Sneezing has become something I mentally prepare for. I never thought I’d reach a point where I’d be nervous about a sneeze, but here we are.”

Him added that while there are currently no obvious marks on the outside, the discomfort remains very real.

“There’s no dramatic bruise for me to show everyone, unfortunately. If there was, maybe it would at least look impressive. But when I press the area, it hurts. Even turning over in bed reminds me that it’s still there. It’s like my rib is quietly protesting every movement.”

The actor revealed that both the production team and close friends have repeatedly encouraged him to get checked out properly.

“The producer kept telling me not to be stubborn. My friends said exactly the same thing. So I’ll make time over the next couple of days to get an X-ray done. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. I’d prefer the doctor to tell me I’m being dramatic rather than discover I’ve been walking around with an injury.”

While the injury sparked concern among fans, Him became noticeably more animated when discussing co-star Bob Lam

The drama marks the first time the pair have shared such extensive screen time despite knowing each other for over ten years. According to Him Law, their friendship and constant conversations behind the scenes helped create a natural partnership on camera.

“We met more than a decade ago while filming a movie, but this project was completely different. We spent three months together almost every day. We have mutual friends, so there was never a shortage of things to talk about. Sometimes we’d be chatting so much that people would probably wonder if we remembered we were supposed to be working.”

Him also jokingly pointed out how much Bob’s career has evolved over the years. “He’s a big boss now. Meanwhile, I’m still getting attacked by my own elbow. Life really takes people in different directions,” he laughed.

More seriously, Him Law praised Bob’s attitude and willingness to learn.

“What I admire most about him is how open-minded he is. If I suggested a different way of approaching a scene, he would genuinely listen. Some people immediately become defensive, but Bob was always willing to try new ideas. Because he was so receptive, I felt comfortable sharing my thoughts. That created a really positive working environment.”

He continued, “You can teach techniques, but you can’t teach attitude. Bob has the right attitude. He’s generous, easy-going and always willing to improve. That’s why working together felt so smooth. I genuinely think audiences will be able to see that chemistry when the drama airs.”

Beyond the pairing of Him Law and Bob Lam, the series also stars Aska Cheung, while Venus Wong, Kelly Fu and Winki Lai make up a strong female cast.

The combination of action, humour, crime drama and fresh character dynamics has already generated curiosity among TVB viewers eager to see how the ensemble performs together.

Online reactions following Him Law’s comments have been varied. Many fans expressed concern over the actor’s health, urging him not to delay his hospital visit and praising his commitment to performing his own action scenes.

Others could not resist joking about his description of being defeated by a sneeze, with some netizens saying the most dangerous opponent in the drama might not be a villain but his own rib.

Meanwhile, plenty of viewers were equally focused on his glowing praise for Bob Lam, saying the strong friendship between the two actors could become one of the show's biggest strengths when it premieres.

For now, fans are hoping the X-ray delivers good news and that Him’s injury turns out to be nothing more than a painful reminder of an ambitious stunt.

With The Cop Is a Big Shot already generating discussion before its release, viewers are now watching closely to see whether the much-talked-about chemistry between Him Law and Bob Lam lives up to expectations.

Do you think this pairing could become TVB’s next fan-favourite partnership, or will another character steal the spotlight when the drama finally arrives?
