A routine variety show taping turned into a full-blown industry talking point after Hello Saturday mistakenly paired Zhang Jingyi’s name with Zhou Ye’s photo, prompting both actresses’ teams to demand accountability.

What should have been a straightforward guest appearance quickly spiralled into a PR headache that no amount of post-production polish could fix.

The controversy erupted following the 2 May 2026 broadcast, where Zhang Jingyi appeared as the sole female guest representing the drama Dream Garden

Biewers, however, were less focused on the content and more on a glaring visual error: her name tag featured Zhou Ye’s image—despite Zhou Ye not even being present.

A mix-up this basic, in a high-budget programme, has left many questioning how such an oversight slipped through multiple layers of production.

The situation escalated when behind-the-scenes photos, briefly shared by artist Zhang Yanqi before being deleted, exposed the error in full clarity.

Screenshots spread rapidly online, because of course they did, turning a quiet production slip into a trending topic within hours. Once it’s on the internet, it’s no longer a mistake—it’s a moment.

Zhang Jingyi’s studio wasted no time issuing a statement, revealing they had repeatedly contacted the programme team and demanded immediate removal of all incorrect materials.

They also called for a public apology and an internal review, pointing out what they described as a lack of even the most basic verification process.

More strikingly, the studio noted that their team had not been allowed on set, effectively removing any chance to catch or correct the error in real time. Not exactly a confidence-building workflow.

As a result, all promotional cooperation tied to the episode has been suspended by Zhang Jingyi’s side, at least until a formal clarification is issued. It’s a clear signal: fix it properly, or don’t expect business as usual.

Meanwhile, Zhou Ye’s team also stepped in, making it clear they were not pleased with their artist’s image being used without consent.

Beyond the unauthorised usage, they highlighted the unintended consequences—namely a wave of misplaced criticism and online attacks directed at Zhou Ye.

Their statement called for a transparent explanation from the programme and left the door open for legal action, particularly against those spreading false narratives or engaging in targeted negativity.

Both parties emphasised a shared stance: protecting artists’ rights and reputations in an environment where misinformation spreads faster than corrections.

It‘s less about a single mistake now, and more about how quickly and responsibly it’s handled.

Some viewers brushed it off as a technical error blown out of proportion, while others questioned how a production of this scale could miss something so fundamental.

A recurring sentiment across platforms is simple: if audiences can spot the mistake instantly, why couldn’t the production team? Others pointed out the irony—variety shows thrive on detail and presentation, yet this was a detail that went very publicly wrong.

The broader conversation has shifted towards professionalism in television production. Missteps like this, however small they may seem internally, can carry disproportionate consequences once they reach the public eye.

All eyes are now on Hello Saturday to see whether it responds with a clear apology and corrective action, or attempts to quietly move on. Given the level of attention this has attracted, silence might be the loudest statement of all.

What do you reckon—just an honest slip, or a sign of deeper cracks behind the scenes?
