Thai comedian and presenter Tukky Sudarat probably did not expect a nostalgic behind-the-scenes story to spiral into one of Thailand’s loudest online debates this week. But that is exactly what happened after the actress appeared on a television programme and recalled an uncomfortable moment from her early entertainment industry days, long before she became a household name. Instead of universal sympathy, the internet suddenly flipped the script and turned the spotlight right back onto her.
The controversy began after Tukky Sudarat Butprom shared a story about working in costume and wardrobe departments during her younger years. According to Tukky, there was once a hugely popular leading actress who allegedly nudged shoes towards her with a foot and expected her to help put them on. Tukky explained that she was still inexperienced at the time and felt shocked by the treatment.
Confused and uncomfortable, she reportedly walked away from the situation, only to later be scolded by her supervisor for not understanding how backstage work around celebrities operated. What started as a story about difficult industry experiences quickly became something much bigger online.
Tukky explained during the programme that the incident stayed with her throughout her career and became a personal reminder to treat staff kindly if she ever became successful herself.
The irony, however, was not lost on Thai social media users. Within hours of the clip spreading online, netizens began resurfacing old rumours and personal encounters involving Tukky’s own behaviour after becoming famous.
On Thai social media platform X, reactions exploded almost immediately. Some users questioned whether the story was being shared genuinely or simply to bring attention back onto the comedian after years away from major headlines.
Others went further, claiming they had personally experienced cold or distant behaviour from Tukky in public settings. Several comments described her as “arrogant”, “unapproachable”, or overly aware of her celebrity status.
One viral comment even joked that Tukky allegedly carried herself “more dramatically than the leading actresses she complained about”. Thai social media, as always, wasted absolutely no time sharpening the sarcasm.
At the same time, another side of the internet pushed back against the criticism and argued that people were ignoring the realities of backstage entertainment work.
Many former production crew members and people familiar with filming environments explained that wardrobe assistants often help actors dress from head to toe, especially during rushed filming schedules or when costumes are tight and difficult to manage alone.
Several users pointed out that international productions work similarly, with stylists and assistants regularly helping performers with shoes, accessories, and costume adjustments. In other words, according to many commenters, the real issue was not necessarily the act itself but the attitude and context surrounding it.
That split in reactions has become the biggest reason the controversy continues trending across Thailand. Some viewers believe Tukky’s story highlighted unhealthy celebrity hierarchies inside entertainment culture, especially towards behind-the-scenes staff.
Others think the actress unintentionally reopened criticism about her own public image instead. The debate has now evolved beyond just one viral anecdote and turned into a wider conversation about how celebrities interact with workers, fans, and ordinary people once fame enters the picture.
Adding even more attention to the situation is Tukky’s long-standing reputation in Thai entertainment. The comedian remains one of Thailand’s recognisable comedy figures and is known internationally for appearing in the hit film First Love (A Little Thing Called Love) as the hilariously strict English teacher many viewers still remember years later.
That popularity is partly why the backlash spread so quickly. In celebrity culture, audiences often forgive stars for being chaotic, dramatic, or outspoken. What they rarely forgive is perceived hypocrisy. The internet especially enjoys serving irony hotter than street food noodles at midnight.
For now, Tukky Sudarat has not made any major extended response regarding the criticism flooding Thai social media. But the discussion around her interview shows no signs of slowing down.
Some viewers still sympathise with the young woman she once was backstage, while others remain focused on stories about how fame may have changed her over the years.
Either way, Thailand’s entertainment scene has once again proven that one old story, one television clip, and one badly timed wave of nostalgia can suddenly turn into a national online debate overnight.
So what do you think — was Tukky exposing harsh celebrity culture, or did the internet simply decide it was time to expose her too?
