NCT member Winwin, also known as Dong Sicheng, may have entered A Splendid Match (良陈美锦) as the second male lead, but viewers are increasingly treating him like the emotional centre of the entire drama. While the series continues gaining traction among historical romance fans, online discussion has unexpectedly shifted toward one topic above all else: how did the “quiet idol guy” suddenly become one of the most talked-about costume drama actors of the year?

The answer, according to many viewers, lies somewhere between his heartbreakingly restrained acting and the fact that he apparently looks like he walked straight out of an ancient Chinese painting with excellent lighting. As Ye Xian, Winwin plays a nobleman who appears carefree and mischievous on the surface but slowly reveals himself to be painfully loyal, emotionally fragile, and carrying a serious heart condition.

Naturally, because historical dramas enjoy emotionally destroying audiences as a hobby, the character’s fate only becomes more tragic as the story unfolds. From the moment Winwin first appeared in costume, Chinese social media quickly exploded with praise for his visuals.

Viewers described him as “the chosen ancient man” and compared his elegant aura to aristocratic characters from the classic novel Dream of the Red Chamber

His sharp bone structure, phoenix-shaped eyes, and calm screen presence created the kind of historical drama image that makes audiences suddenly forget modern technology exists.

Some fans joked that he looked less like an actor and more like a forgotten prince accidentally transported into a television set.

Before this drama, Winwin had already experimented with period roles through Perfect Match, but A Splendid Match appears to have pushed his reputation to another level entirely.

Unlike many idol-turned-actors who spend years trying to convince viewers they belong in Chinese historical dramas, Winwin somehow slipped into the genre so naturally that audiences are now wondering why producers did not cast him in flowing robes sooner.

The internet, as always, wasted no time declaring him “made for costume dramas” after roughly three episodes and one emotional stare into the distance.

The emotional core of the series comes through Ye Xian’s increasingly devastating character arc. Though playful at first, the character gradually reveals layers of loneliness, emotional restraint, and quiet desperation.

His tragic ending quickly became one of the most discussed moments in the drama. In the final battle, Ye Xian wears his late father’s armour and leads the remaining soldiers in a hopeless defence of the city before ultimately dying on the battlefield.

It is the exact kind of noble, tragic ending that historical drama writers adore and audiences claim to hate before immediately making thirty emotional edits about it online.

Viewers especially praised how Winwin handled the emotional collapse beneath the character’s composed exterior. Rather than relying on exaggerated reactions, he played Ye Xian with subtle facial expressions and restrained emotion.

One scene in particular spread rapidly across Weibo after airing. In the sequence, Ye Xian attempts to help Gu Jinzhao, played by Ren Min, by teaching her younger brother a lesson over his unhealthy gaming habits. Instead, his actions completely backfire, leaving Gu Jinzhao furious and their relationship strained.

What made the scene resonate online was the tiny emotional shift Winwin delivered almost entirely through silence. As Ye Xian realises the consequences of his actions, he quietly holds back tears before finally letting a single tear fall while forcing out a bitter smile.

It was understated, awkward, regretful, and painfully human all at once. Fans immediately latched onto the moment, with clips spreading widely across Chinese social media platforms.

One viewer wrote, “That single tear scene deserves its own award,” while another joked, “Excuse me, since when did idols start acting like this?”

Others admitted they were genuinely surprised by how much Winwin’s acting had improved in recent years. Some viewers confessed they initially watched the drama only out of curiosity because of his idol background, only to end up emotionally attached to Ye Xian by the final episodes.

One popular comment online bluntly read, “Are we sure he was only an idol before this? Why is he acting better than half the male leads lately?” Brutal perhaps, but the internet rarely believes in gentle compliments.

At a recent fan meeting in Shanghai, Winwin personally responded to the sudden attention surrounding his historical drama image.

Laughing about being labelled “naturally ancient-looking” by fans, he said he hopes to continue taking on more costume drama roles in the future and joked that he could probably keep filming historical series until he turns 50.

Considering the current reaction online, producers are probably already making calls while audiences prepare emotionally for another tragic nobleman role where he suffers beautifully for 40 episodes straight.

Reactions among viewers remain varied. While many praised his emotional restraint and elegant screen presence, others argued that his performance works best in quieter scenes rather than heavily dramatic confrontations.

A few viewers also felt the drama itself occasionally relied too much on Ye Xian’s tragedy to emotionally manipulate audiences. Yet even critics largely agreed on one thing: Winwin unexpectedly emerged as the series’ biggest conversation starter. For a second male lead, that is not just impressive — it is practically historical drama theft.

With A Splendid Match continuing to gain attention online, discussion around Winwin’s acting career has only intensified. Some fans are already demanding a reunion project between him and Ren Min, while others believe this drama marks the beginning of a serious transition from idol fame into respected acting territory.

Whether audiences tuned in for romance, political intrigue, or simply to watch beautiful people stare emotionally at lanterns for an hour, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: Dong Sicheng is no longer just “that NCT member trying acting.”

He is now one of the most unexpectedly compelling faces in the historical drama scene. The real question now is whether viewers are ready to survive another Ye Xian-level heartbreak if he keeps accepting these roles
