‘M.I.A.’ did not end its first season quietly. It ended with betrayals, bloodshed, hidden identities and enough emotional damage to keep at least three therapists fully booked for the next decade. By the time the finale wrapped up, Etta Tiger Jonze was no longer simply a grieving daughter chasing revenge.
She had transformed into something much more dangerous — someone finally willing to stop playing defence and start dismantling an entire cartel from the inside out. Simple enough in theory. Horrifying in execution, but simple. However, by the finale, her ambitions expand dramatically. Instead of crossing names off a revenge list one by one, she now wants the complete destruction of the Rojeses cartel itself. Casual career pivot, really.
That shift explains why Elias remains alive. Rather than killing him after discovering his involvement in her mother’s death, Etta makes the unexpected choice to secretly save him.
Hidden away in Lena’s underground base after emergency surgery, Elias becomes both prisoner and potential weapon. It is a fascinating twist because Elias is no longer simply an enemy. He is now a walking vault full of cartel secrets, hidden operations and dangerous connections.
In other words, M.I.A season 2 could turn into a deeply uncomfortable alliance where nobody trusts anyone, yet everyone still needs each other to survive. Those usually make the messiest television relationships, which is excellent news for viewers and terrible news for the characters.
The emotional tension between Etta and Elias could easily become the strongest part of a future season. Elias already carries guilt, trauma and divided loyalties, while Etta is balancing rage with increasingly complicated moral decisions. The more she steps into the cartel world, the more she risks resembling the very people she hates.
‘M.I.A.’ has consistently hinted at that transformation, and M.I.A season 2 could push it even further. Revenge stories always start with “justice” before quietly evolving into “everyone urgently needs sleep and emotional support.”
The cast itself may also look noticeably different if the series returns. Season 1 proved more than willing to remove major characters without warning, which keeps viewers permanently nervous whenever anyone enters a room alone. Danay Garcia’s Carmen appears definitively gone following the finale, while Samuel’s fate remains uncertain after his violent confrontation with Elias.
Depending on how the writers handle the aftermath, both characters may only return through flashbacks or brief appearances. This kind of unpredictability has become one of the show’s biggest strengths. Nobody feels safe, including viewers emotionally attached to the cast. Especially them.
Still, several key figures are expected to return if M.I.A season 2 moves forward. Shannon Gisela would undoubtedly remain at the centre as Etta, alongside Brittany Adebumola as Lovely, Dylan T Jackson as Stanley and Alberto Guerra as Elias.
Meanwhile, Maurice Compte’s Mateo could become even more important now that internal cartel fractures are beginning to emerge. The possibility of new enemies, rival factions and outside investigators also leaves plenty of room for additional cast members to enter the chaos.
Another storyline expected to explode in M.I.A season 2 is Etta’s relationship with Matt, which quietly became one of the season’s most dangerous twists. For much of season 1, Matt represented Etta’s fragile connection to normal life. Unfortunately for everyone involved, television writers hate peace and stability.
By the finale, Etta discovers that Matt is directly connected to the Rojeses family through his mother, Caroline, who launders cartel money while carefully distancing herself from the dirtier side of the business.
What makes this storyline especially messy is that Matt remains completely unaware of Etta’s true mission.
He knows she is hiding something, but he clearly does not realise his girlfriend is effectively plotting against his extended family while balancing emotional trauma and cartel warfare between bartending shifts.
That revelation alone feels powerful enough to anchor an entire second season. Once Matt inevitably learns the truth, the emotional fallout could be catastrophic for both characters.
Caroline herself may also become a larger target moving forward. Her careful separation from direct cartel activity has protected her so far, but Etta is now close enough to infiltrate her world without suspicion. This gives M.I.A season 2 the opportunity to lean harder into psychological tension rather than pure action.
Watching Etta navigate romance, deception and revenge simultaneously could create the series’ strongest material yet. Because apparently surviving armed criminals was not stressful enough already.
Online reactions to potential M.I.A season 2 theories have been intense since the finale aired. Some viewers are convinced Elias will eventually betray Etta again, while others believe the two are heading toward an uneasy partnership built entirely on shared trauma and mutual hatred.
Fans are also heavily divided over Matt, with some hoping he escapes the cartel drama entirely and others predicting he will eventually be dragged deeper into the conflict whether he likes it or not.
